EMMETSBURG DISTRICT MISSION
The Emmetsburg CSD believes we will create an environment of promoting growth and serving others.
First Grade
Our first graders had a wonderful time celebrating Valentine’s Day together! The classroom was filled with smiles, laughter, and friendship as students enjoyed cookies, apples, strawberries, and plenty of sweet treats. One of the favorite activities was a fun dice-rolling game paired with Valentine conversation hearts. Students also spent time sitting and chatting with their classmates, strengthening friendships and practicing positive social skills that are so important in our classroom community.
Along with celebrating, first grade students have been working hard in their science learning. Over the last few weeks, we have been studying the history of the Earth. Students explored rocks and minerals through hands-on investigation and discussion about how Earth has changed over time.
Our science learning also continues to focus on the Sun and Moon. This learning led students to investigate shadows. Our investigation began with a big thinking question: “Why do shadows move if statues don’t move?” Students explored how light sources, the position of the Sun, and object placement affect how shadows appear and change throughout the day.
We are proud of the curiosity, teamwork, and excitement for learning our first graders continue to show every day. Thank you for supporting our classroom and helping make celebrations and learning experiences so meaningful for our students!
4 Year Old Preschool
Preschool has been busy this month! We had our Friendship Day Preschool classroom swap day! In Mrs. Rodemeyer's classroom they had a yummy snack. Miss Kaitlin also visited this month and talked about spring sightings vs winter. The preschoolers also got to hang out with their 3rd grade buddies for a PBIS reward! We loved coloring and reading with our buddies!
Kindergarten Readiness
2nd grade
2nd graders have been learning about 2D shapes in math. During science time they worked with cornmeal to create landforms to test how canyons form an dhow to prevent water erosion to land.

Third Grade
3d graders in math have been working on learning to measure to inches and meaured some items around the room. Third graders also really enjoyed Valentine's Day by bringing in their own creation for boxes! So fun to see what they created!

4th Grade
Fourth graders in science were dropping items into water to see the wave pattern and what makes a bigger wave vs smaller wave.
Math Resources
Third and Fourth Grade:
Math should not be stressful or hard. We want to make math fun and easy for your child. This month we want to encourage you to help your child realize the true meaning of counting. When children are little, we get excited that they can recite the sequence of numbers, but that is not what counting is really about. The true purpose of counting is to count things and be able to tell how many they have. This is known as Object Counting and Cardinality.
Object counting occurs when your child attaches the counting words to objects and they are able to count a set of items. Once they count the set of items, being able to answer the question “How many do you have?” is known as Cardinality. Kids continue to count even in the upper grades, but we are working on counting large groups of items and finding ways to group them to make counting more efficient.
Kids will count individually Kids may use multiplication
We have been working on these ideas throughout the school year, but I wanted to send home some fun and easy things you can do with your child so that they see math, and counting objects, outside of school.
To help children build an understanding of multiplication and division, it’s helpful for them to see groups of items instead of individually counting items. So anytime you have a collection of things, ask your child to arrange them in a way that would make it easier to count. When they can group things, it leads them into using multiplication to determine the total amount instead of counting.
When baking, if the recipe calls for ¾ cup, instead of using a ¾ measuring cup use the ¼ cup and count out ¼, 2/4, ¾. This helps your child see the unit counted over and over to create the end amount.
