First Grade Newsletter

Dear Families,

Welcome to 1st grade!

In this newsletter you will find some important information for the upcoming month.

Please remember arrival to school begins at 7:50 and school starts at 8:15. Breakfast is only served until 8:15.

Water bottles are welcomed and encouraged for your student. They must only contain plain water.

Your student will come home with a clear daily folder and weekly reflection sheet. Please look at both daily for important papers, your student's daily self evaluation and any communication between home and school.

Success Block

📚 What Is the Success Block?

At North Frederick ES and all FCPS, we believe every child deserves what they need to grow — whether that’s extra support, deeper challenges, or time to practice key skills. That’s why we’ve built a dedicated daily time called the Success Block into our school schedule.

⏰ What Happens During the Success Block?

During this time, all students receive targeted instruction based on their individual needs. Here’s what that could look like:

📖 Reading Intervention: Some students may receive small-group support to boost their reading skills.
✨ Enrichment: Some may dive deeper into challenging content or creative projects.
🔁 Pre-Teaching or Re-Teaching: Others may get extra help reviewing or previewing key concepts from their classroom lessons in reading or math.

A letter from your child's success teacher will come home this week with your child's success focus.

Social Studies

Living in a Community Unit

In this unit students will explore the question, “How can I be helpful in my community?” First they will learn about the communities in which they belong and the benefits of being part of a community. Students will learn about how leaders help their community and how they can help their community by being civically engaged. They explore what it means to cooperate and why cooperation is important in reaching school goals. Finally, students will examine how communities solve problems. They will identify a community problem and potential solutions for the common good of all members of the community.
