Greetings from your new principal, Mrs. Gach

Dear FMS Families,

Hello! I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself to you. My name is Sarah Jayne Gach and I’m incredibly excited to partner with you as the new principal at Franklin Middle School. I look forward to meeting you and your children on Monday the 24th at Open House.

I’d like to share a little bit about myself as a person. My husband, Dave, and I have been married for 23 years. We have three children and a VERY cute new puppy. We enjoy camping, taking road trips to visit friends and family, and being outdoors. I am a very avid lover of learning. I read A LOT, listen to Podcasts daily, and take every opportunity I can to attend professional development. I’m also very into cooking, music, and all things health and wellness.

I have been an educator since 2000. I attended the University of Michigan - Dearborn earning my undergraduate degree (Math Major, Language Arts and Social Studies Minors), Marygrove College for my Master’s Degree, and Oakland University for my Ed Specialist Degree in Educational Leadership. I began my career in Westwood Community School District at Tomlinson Intermediate, then moved to South Redford School District at Pierce Middle School where I taught for a majority of my career. I later moved into a lead Behavioral Interventionist role which I very much enjoyed. I had the opportunity to lead a team in creating systems to support our teachers, families, and students with behavior. After that I started my journey as an administrator. Over the last 8 years I have served as an elementary, middle, and high school principal. I have a true passion for middle school and am incredibly excited to join FMS. I look forward to making Wayne Westland home and serving you for years to come.

I have already heard such great things about Franklin! I am very eager to get to know the Franklin community and to partner with you in ensuring the success of your children. It’s going to be a great school year!

All the best,
Mrs. Gach

MiSTAR APP for Parent and StudentConnect MiSTAR APP for Parent and StudentConnect

For your ease and convenience, there is an app that has been created to have quick access to your Parent and Student Connection. In your Google App or Play store, type in "MiStar" and you will have the option to download the "Q ParentConnection" app for yourself and also the "Q StudentConnection" app for your child. The convenience of having an app, rather than locating the website and looking up the PIN and password each time, can save you time and effort. We highly recommend downloading if you have a device.

If you get the app, you can select the "Re-Enrollment" in the drop down menu to submit your information that way as well.

Transportation Information Transportation Information

Transportation will begin on the first day of school, Tuesday, August 25th, for all eligible students. Your transportation information (route and pick up and drop off times) will be found under the 'Transportation' tab in your Parent/Student Connect account.

Bussers

Please note students are expected to load their bus immediately at the dismissal bell. Dismissal is at 2:40pm and buses depart at 2:47pm. Buses will not return to the school for students that missed the bus. Students will need to come to the main office to contact their parent/guardian to be picked up.

Parent/Guardian Pick Up

Students that are picked up from school are not allowed to wait in the building. They are dismissed outside with all other students. Students will need to be picked up in a timely matter as afterschool supervision is not provided for late pick ups.

Walkers

Students that walk home need to leave the premises immediately after dismissal. Reentry into the building is not allowed and students are not to hang out on school property or at the surrounding businesses.

Requests to Ride Home with Another Student

If a parent requests that their child ride home with another student, the request must first be approved. Please provide our staff with a letter stating the name of your student, the date you'd like your student to ride with another, the name of the other student, and your signature for approval. Our staff will also require a letter from the other students' home confirming they are prepared to receive your student off the bus. As we will need to also communicate with our transportation department, please give at least 48 hours notice.

Early Pick Up Policy

Our school day ends at 2:40pm. All dismissal arrangements/changes and pickups must be made by 2:20pm. After 2:20pm parents/guardians will have to wait until students are released at the bell.

Attendance Policy Attendance Policy

All data and research tells us that when students are in class, they are learning and with some effort will pass their courses. Students are required to be in class every day. Once a student reaches 10 undocumented absences, they are considered truant, according to Michigan State Law.

Students who are late to class are taking away a learning opportunity for all students in that class due to disruptions. All students are expected to be here every day and on time to their classes. The District Attendance Policy states that if a student misses more than 25% of a class, they are considered absent. Participation in certain activities may be limited by poor attendance.

Students that need to leave school early need to have a parent or emergency contact sign them out in the main office.

Parents are expected to call the attendance line at (734) 419-2424 before 9:00am on the day of the absence to be excused early. All absences must be excused within 48 hours of student absence. You may leave a message on the appropriate office voicemail system 24 hours a day.

If your student will be missing school for any documented reason, please drop off a copy of the document in person or email the document to braswellw@wwcsd.net. Documented absence examples would include but are not limited to: a Doctor’s Note, Court Document, or Funeral Home Note.

The district is moving towards a cohesive attendance campaign to encourage student attendance. There will be more information forthcoming, but in the short term you will find information below about how to record absences for your students.

Cell Phone Policy Cell Phone Policy

User uploaded image
zoom_out_map

All wireless communication devices (including, but not limited to, smart phones, cell phones, airpods, tablets, and smart watches) must be turned off or locked in the student's locker during class time. The district will send out a comprehensive policy on this soon.

To be clear, research shows there is no educational, social, or emotional benefit to a student having a cell phone or headphones/earbuds/etc. in our building. It only serves as a distraction or catalyst to inappropriate behavior.

Certain allowances are made for medical reasons, but those must be coordinated with administration.
Students that violate the no cell phone policy during class time will receive progressive discipline which includes:

  • First Offense: Tracked warning and parent communication

  • Second Offense: Phone brought down to the office by student or behavior coach, parent communication, student picks up phone at end of day.

  • Third Offense: Phone brought down to the office by student or behavior coach, parent communication, parent pickup.

  • Fourth Offense: Phone brought down to the office by student or behavior coach, parent communication, parent pickup, and cell phone “detention” (student brings phone to office every day and pickup at end of day for a predetermined amount of time).

  • Fifth Offense: May result in ISS/OSS. Any beyond five offenses will result in progressive discipline.

If you need to reach your student during the school day you must reach out to the front office.

Sports & Medication Sports & Medication

All students participating in athletics MUST HAVE A MHSAA ATHLETIC FORM TURNED IN to the Counseling Office or Athletic Director BEFORE THE FIRST PRACTICE OR TRYOUT (whichever is first). Physical forms may be picked up in the main office or HERE is the digital form. Eligible physicals must be dated April 15th, 2026 or earlier.

If your child has any medical needs during the school day, please bring the necessary documentation to the main office. This includes inhalers. Any medication to be kept in the office must be brought in by a parent or guardian. Click HERE to access the necessary forms we will need on file prior to the start of school.

It is the WWCSD district policy that NO prescribed or over-the-counter medication can be in school without WWCSD medication forms signed by a doctor and parent. If the form turned in is for "self carry" orders, the student may keep the medication with them. If it is not a "self carry" order, only parents or their listed contacts may bring in the medication which will be kept in the main office. Blank medication forms can be picked up if needed in the main office during the school year.
