Commencement Reflection
Featured Story: Grand Opening of the LSPS Community and ECC Centers!
Big news from Lake Shore!
We proudly celebrated the grand opening of the Lake Shore Public Schools Community and Early Childhood Center on June 6th at 10:00 a.m., located at 28850 Harper Avenue in St. Clair Shores. This premier early learning and lifelong development center, situated on Harper near 12 Mile Road, has been thoughtfully designed to provide a unique and innovative environment where individuals and families of all ages can gather, grow, and thrive.
Superintendent Dr. DiPonio welcomed guests for a heartfelt ribbon-cutting ceremony ✂️, opening the doors to these beautifully reimagined spaces for a sneak peek.
Official Opening Timeline:
- Community Center — Scheduled to open and begin operations in September 2026
- Early Childhood Center — Scheduled to open and begin operations following July 4, 2026
As Macomb County’s premier early childhood center, the ECC is open to all families, ages 2 months to 4 years old. With easy access to the I-94 corridor and less than five miles from surrounding communities, it’s a safe and nurturing environment for our youngest learners to begin their path to success, as well as a convenient, accessible, and affordable option for families.
The Community Center featured an indoor turf field house, batting cages, multipurpose room, instructional room, community stage, walking track, fitness equipment, pickle ball courts, and rock-climbing wall. The first and only space of its kind in the Shores, will be available not only to our staff and students, but also to our strong alumnus base, the Lake Shore community, and neighbors. Rental and Membership opportunities will be available.
Rodgers Elementary 5th grader Madelynn Senter shared, “My favorite was the soccer and rock wall space — so fun! I hope we get to use it sometime during our day at Rodgers, too.”
Parent Rachel Veres, a Masonic Heights family member with four boys and a connection to our former ECC location, immediately noticed the difference. She shared how much she appreciated the limited screen presence and the abundance of hands-on, tactile experiences available.
Spaces designed for movement, exploration, and active learning are already making an impression!
The Facts
- $12 million project
- 56,000 square foot facility
- 18 Early Childhood Classrooms
- $1.25 million state grant to fund portion of ECC
Welcome to the new Centers — where every child is encouraged to grow, thrive, and dream BIG! These spaces represents progress, possibility, and the strength of our community.
ECC Coordinator Kelly Biondo shared a heartfelt reflection:
“As I look back over this last school year, I realize it is a bit bittersweet for me. I see the closing of a chapter that has brought me great joy. We have loved and cared for many children over the last six years in the building [on Elmira Street]. However, as I look ahead toward the ECC’s future, I am incredibly thankful and excited to be part of what lies ahead for the Shorian Early Childhood Center. I fully expect this to be very successful for the district and I am looking forward to working with [ECC Director] Lisa Bonett to support the innovative plans she has for our future.”
Thank you to our community for your continued support and investment in our schools. Together, we’ve created a place that will serve Shorians for generations to come.
We loved celebrating with our families, alumni, neighbors, and friends — and if you missed it, we can’t wait to welcome you soon!

Summer is About to Get Quacking at Lake Shore!
We all know the Positivity Project has been a big win for Lake Shore Public Schools. We celebrate the grades, the goals, and the championships—but let’s not forget the real MVP: character.
Enter: Kelly Groover, Senior Marketing Manager from the Positivity Project, who casually said, “What if we made the summer sendoff… legendary?” And just like that—boom—rubber ducks.
This year, every kindergartener and staff member is getting their very own Lake Shore lil’ rubber duck. Why? Because nothing says “stay connected” like tiny plastic ducks showing up in vacation photos across the country (and hopefully not getting lost in airport security).
The mission: take your duck everywhere. Snap photos. Share the adventures. Whether it’s the beach, the backyard, or just floating in a questionable hotel pool—Shorian Nation will be everywhere this summer.
And the best part? No matter where life takes them, Lake Shore will always be home… even if the duck ends up somewhere weird.
This whole idea actually hatched (yes, pun intended) at Rodgers Elementary during spring break, where staff were given ducks and asked to document their travels. The result? Duck pics. Everywhere. A full-blown flock of vacation content.
So naturally… we’re taking it to the next level.
Huge thanks again to Kelly and the entire Positivity Project team for making this sponsorship happen—this sendoff is about to be quacking good.
Keep those ducks busy this summer! Whether they’re soaking up sun, hitting the road, or just chilling poolside, we want to see it all.
Send your best duck adventures all summer long to social@lsps.org—because no vacation is complete without a photogenic LS rubber duck.

Summer Food Service
Lake Shore children will continue to benefit from free, healthy, and nutritious meals during the summer months in 2026, the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) announced.
Starting next week, Food Distribution continues with our participation in the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), a governmental program ensuring that children could continue to receive nutritious meals during long school vacations, when they do not have access to the National School Lunch or School Breakfast Programs. The SFSP, also known as Meet Up and Eat Up, is operated at the local level by program Sponsors and is administered in Michigan by the Michigan Department of Education (MDE), Office of Health and Nutrition Services.

- Meal Sites Across Michigan: https://www.mcgi.state.mi.us/schoolnutrition/
The Meet Up and Eat Up Summer Food Service Program serves children up to age 18.
“There is a vital need to reach out to the state’s most vulnerable young people to provide nutritious food,” said State Superintendent Dr. Michael F. Rice. “MDE remains committed to leveraging every available option to feed more children during the summer.”
For many students, the cafeteria is the first stop on their school journey. From that very first walk through the lunch line, our heroes are focused on more than just nutrition—they care deeply about each child's well-being. Their priorities include keeping students safe, making them feel welcome, and serving up meals that are both nourishing and delicious.

OK2SAY Student Safety Program
See something? Say something.
OK2SAY is the student safety program which allows students to confidentially report tips on potential harm or criminal activities directed at school students, school employees, and schools. It uses a comprehensive communication system to facilitate tip sharing among students, parents, school personnel, community mental health service programs, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, and law enforcement officials about harmful behaviors that threaten to disrupt the learning environment.
Anyone can report tips on criminal activities or potential harm directed at students, school employees, or schools. Tips can be submitted 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
While continually evolving and reviewed annually, on this Safety and Security webpage you will find a list of recent and current safety measures implemented by Lake Shore Public Schools to provide the safest environment for our students and staff.
Celebration
Then. Now. Next. Celebrating Every Shorian Milestone
We recently celebrated the early milestones of our youngest learners during our Kindergarten celebrations. With cheers, dancing, and joyful waves, staff honored the Class of 2038 with admiration and pride. Time flies—before we know it, these imaginative and carefree students will be walking across the stage to receive their high school diplomas. In fact, we’ve already honored our graduating Class of 2026 by displaying their names on marquee signs at each of our buildings.
We’ve had the privilege of watching you learn and grow every day, and we are excited to see what you’ll accomplish next. Congratulations to the Class of 2038—keep dreaming of becoming superheroes, princesses, or master builders of the world!
Sarah Brooks, Bradley’s mom reflected:
“We are so excited to celebrate Bradley as he completes kindergarten at Rodgers Elementary! He is the absolute light of our lives, and we can’t believe how much he has grown and learned this year. If you ask Bradley what he wants to be when he grows up, he’ll enthusiastically tell you — either a skilled trades professional or a police officer.
As a Lake Shore Public Schools alumna, it’s especially meaningful to watch our little Shorian begin his own journey. We love you, Bradley, and can’t wait to see all the amazing things ahead!”
Ashley and Ryan McWhirter proudly celebrated alongside their twin kindergarteners from Violet Elementary, Grant and Gavin. They shared, “We are so proud of you and everything you’ve accomplished this year. We can’t wait to see all the amazing things you’ll do in the future!”
Looking ahead, Gavin dreams of becoming a professional golfer, while Grant hopes to become an engineer.
Just 3.8 miles down the road, Lake Shore Early Childhood Center held a successful Trike-A-Thon. Next year, the short 9-minute drive will be a thing of the past—as completed bond work will bring both Rodgers and the Early Childhood Center together under one roof after July 4th, with two separate and secure entrances.
Our “time machine” video where young kindergarten students magically transform into graduating Shorians.
They always told us to enjoy every moment because it goes fast… but we never truly believed them until now. From first-day smiles and tiny backpacks to caps, gowns, and graduation day — the journey flew by in the blink of an eye.
We continue the celebration season with a jump to some of our most seasoned graduates...
North Lake High School’s Class of 2026 and graduates of the Lake Shore Adult & Community Education High School Completion Program recently celebrated their achievements alongside proud families. Smiles were shared, and joyful tears marked this unforgettable milestone.
Congratulations Barracudas!
Celebrating Our Incredible 5th Grade Leaders, Learners & Legends
🎉 At our 5th Grade Celebrations, we honored students for their citizenship, creativity, academics, and attendance across Masonic Heights, Rodgers, and Violet Elementary!
📜 Students took the stage to receive certificates and a well-deserved sendoff. We also spotlighted special programs unique to each school, recognizing participants in Presidential Excellence, Safety Patrol, Community Helpers, Student Council, Choir, Science Olympiad, the Positivity Project, Specials, Ren Revoir Awards and Principal's Choice Awards.
🏅 Congratulations to our Principal’s Award and All-Star Award recipients for their all-around excellence:
👏 Masonic Heights: Max Buchholz
👏 Rodgers: Skylar Douglas (Tavernier), Jacob Wenner (Buckman), Matthew Frank (Bishoping)
👏 Violet: Zachariah Wronski and Kristin Woods
🏅 Congratulations to our Ken Revoir Award recipients, a specialty award at Rodgers Elementary dating back to 1981. Mr. Ken Revoir served as the first police liaison officer for Lake Shore School District. An award was created to identify and acknowledge one student per class, annually who exemplified characteristics of the liaison program and honor Revoir’s memory and positive impact he had on our community.
👏 Rodgers: Sara Topalli (Tavernier), Olivia Vernier (Buckman), Lily Ouellette (Bishoping)
“Isabelle had a fantastic year. The kids have all done an amazing job, and I’m thrilled to see them heading to middle school. They are going to do wonderful things!” — Jackie Tunney, parent of a 5th grader at Rodgers Elementary
“The kids have all done a fantastic job. I am thrilled to see them all in middle school. They will do wonderful things!” — Dawn White, parent and building substitute at Rodgers Elementary
One of the highlights of the celebration was hearing 5th grade teacher Mrs. Bishoping share some unforgettable memories from the school year:
📜 Reading a “break-up note” she “found” in the hallway… which was actually a parody of the Declaration of Independence.
👑 When “King George” visited the classroom and sang about how the colonists would come crawling back.
🖼️ Ethan being completely freaked out by the Mona Lisa, leading the class to secretly hide copies of the famous painting in his desk during the Renaissance unit.
🎶 Dancing to Toddler Rave music for Get Up and Dance Day and sharing some of the most innocent fun you’ll ever see.
😂 Covering Mrs. Buckman’s classroom with endless pictures of her face while she was away at Mackinac.
💦 Ryder bravely volunteering to be a human shield during one of the many recess water wars with Ms. Tavernier.
📚 And finally… ISAWAWBUB. Don’t worry, families — it’s not black magic, just subordinating conjunctions.
These are the moments students will remember forever.
✨ There's nothing they can't do—except stay in elementary school forever. Middle school, here they come!
Honoring Excellence: KMS Students Recognized at Annual Celebrations
At our Kennedy Middle School Celebrations, several standouts were recognized with Clipper Awards, the John Hills Award for Determination, Most Outstanding Student, NJHS participant, Honor Roll, ECO Club Recycler, Etiquette Award, and individual course awards.
Parent Rachel Parrinello sat in the crowd supporting her 7th grader as he received his award. She reflected, “So proud of my son Vinny for earning the Gold Honor Roll for the entire school year! His hard work and dedication are truly inspiring. Congratulations on this amazing achievement!"
The transition to Kennedy Middle School from Masonic Heights Elementary, Rodgers Elementary, Violet Elementary, or another elementary school may feel overwhelming. New school. New schedule. New friends. Over time, those 3 middle school years transform from anxiety to excitement. It is the atmosphere at this special school where students learn to adapt, develop skills of independence and responsibility, and prepare for new opportunities.
Thank you Dr. Johnson, Mr. Gaffigan, and Dr. Kubiak for your leadership, kindness, and extraordinary patience as you helped these students face a number of academic and social challenges. Middle school is difficult to navigate, especially when kids are forming their identities. We hope everyone felt special and celebrated!
Shorian State Champions
This really is the year of state champions at Lake Shore! From bowling and wrestling to Esports and SkillsUSA, the momentum is undeniable. Huge congratulations to Abby Smith and Ella Pascoe (SkillsUSA), Thomas Leahy (Wrestling), Devin Patrick (Bowling), and our Esports team!
Now it’s time to go beyond the titles and get to know the people behind these incredible achievements. Each story highlights what makes Lake Shore so special—success across academics (Media Productions), athletics (wrestling and bowling), and extracurriculars (Esports). It’s a true reflection of a well-rounded district where passion, talent, and dedication shine in every arena.
Tommy – Junior
Started wrestling at just 7 years old. His secret to success? Camps, offseason training, extra tournaments—and consistently putting in the work.
Next season, he’s aiming even higher: chasing a second title and taking on a new challenge by bumping up a weight class.
Devin - Senior
Devin’s secret is simple: practice. He bowls nearly every day at Universal Lanes, where the staff knows him well and even plans to hang a banner in his honor. His dedication earned him a spot at Spoon River College in Illinois—accepted even before his state title.
Abby – Senior
Committed to Michigan State for Digital Storytelling.
She’s been in media classes since 8th grade, but her SkillsUSA journey really sparked sophomore year: “Maybe I don’t suck at this…”—and the rest is history. Note: She's a 3x champ!
Her key to success? Strong communication with her partner, attention to detail, and building a compelling storyline with technical precision.
Ella - Junior
Stands out for her creativity, intelligence, and a long list of achievements. Her winning approach? Turning projects into cinematic storytelling instead of traditional ads. From brainstorming on a hotel room floor to embracing creative freedom with different judges, she pushed boundaries. Ella credits her success to teamwork and inspiration from her classmates—especially Abby.
Esports Team
What started as a club four years ago has grown into something much bigger—bringing competition and connection together.
The team puts in serious work, practicing around 5 hours a week, learning strategies, and competing in online scrimmages against collegiate teams. That higher level of play pushed them to grow and sharpen their skills.
All the hard work paid off—and they did it together.

Where Everyone Belongs: Special Athletes Day Showcases the Heart of Shorian Nation
🤗 Creating something meaningful starts with solving problems—and Lake Shore Public Schools showcased this beautifully through our Special Athletes Field Day.
This event exemplifies our commitment to inclusion, a core part of Shorian culture. Inclusion fosters belonging, acceptance, and the belief that everyone should feel valued.
Our student-athletes and teams brought this philosophy to life by facilitating engaging activities and supporting their peers throughout the day. Athletes had the opportunity to build physical fitness, demonstrate courage, and experience joy while sharing their talents, skills, and friendship with family, fellow athletes, and the broader community.
During our recent MoCI graduation ceremony, one of our graduates shared that participating in Special Athletes Field Day each year was one of his favorite memories from his Lake Shore experience. The smiles, excitement, and connections made throughout the day are a powerful reminder of how meaningful this event is for our special education students and school community.
Special Olympics Michigan plays a vital role by offering year-round sports training and competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Events like Field Day reflect that same spirit of opportunity and inclusion.
Special Athletes Day continues to be one of the most meaningful end-of-year traditions for our student-athlete leaders.
“This is my 3rd year being a helper at Special Athletes Day, and I have to say, this is my favorite school event at the end of the year!” — Anniyah Downer, 11th grade
“It is so great to be back here as a senior for this event — I couldn’t miss my last one!” — Sophia VanDenStorm, 12th grade
We’re incredibly grateful to Adapted Physical Education Teacher Cris Belanger, Physical Education/Adaptive PE major student at Grand Valley State University Mark Koski, and our entire Special Education Department for organizing and running such a meaningful event. Thank you also to our Food Service team for a tasty BBQ lunch, the Maintenance and Operations crew for setup and cleanup, families, student-athletes, and participants.
We’re also grateful to the students who managed the scoreboard and music during the event.
We appreciate DOX Grillhouse for sponsoring our Special Athletes t-shirts!
We are also incredibly grateful to the Shorian Nation for the heartfelt clap-in and the unwavering love and support you’ve shown our Special Education students.
We also arranged a police and fire escort (thank you, Detective Hartman!) for our buses traveling to the Lake Shore High School athletic field. This special sendoff will be an incredible way to help our athletes feel celebrated and recognized — exactly as they deserve.
Bonus: 👏 Huge shoutout to LSHS teachers Mr. Knight and Ms. Kamis for bringing creativity and collaboration to life! With the help of our talented MoCI students, they designed, built, and painted custom cornhole boards and the results are amazing.
Projects like this showcase teamwork, creativity, hands-on learning, and the incredible talents our students and staff bring to our school community every day. Great work to everyone involved; We can’t wait to see these boards in action at our new Community Center!
Shorian Specialty Programs
We’re celebrating our incredible seniors from the Macomb Math, Science, and Technology Center (MMSTC) and the Early College of Macomb!
MMSTC’s 33rd graduating class includes 71 students—2 from Lake Shore High School—who together earned an impressive $2,145,384 in scholarships. Their achievements were celebrated on April 30 at the Century Banquet Center.
Lake Shore proudly supports 12 MMSTC students across grades 9–12. Today, we recognize our graduating seniors:
• Tyler Pettway • Lillian Wallace
We’re also celebrating our Early College of Macomb graduates!
Since 2010, ECM has provided a unique, tuition-free pathway for students across 21 Macomb County districts. On May 13, students marked this milestone at their Commencement Ceremony held at the Macomb Center for the Performing Arts, earning Associate Degrees or Technical Certificates.
Congratulations to our ECM graduates:
Barnes, Carrington • Clausen, Emma • Clemons, Jordan • Crater, Nevaeh • Dyrval, Reece • Hartsig, Kayla • Helsel, Isabella • Johnson, LeAsia • Lewis, Korie • Michalowicz, Jadyn • Morrison, Alexander • Niece, Austin • Silva, Angelina • Talbot, Shane • Warunkiewicz, Carter • Zynda, Jacob
Through this innovative partnership with the Macomb Intermediate School District and Macomb Community College, students completed up to 60 college credits—setting them up for success as they transfer to four-year colleges or begin their careers.
We’re proud of each and every one of you—your future is bright!
Small Riders, Big Adventures at Lake Shore Early Childhood Center
Lake Shore Early Childhood Center hosted a heartwarming and energetic Trike-A-Thon, fostering a lifelong love of biking, movement, and learning among its youngest students.
The event was a joyful scene: the sound of tiny tires rolling along pavement, cheers from teachers and families, and smiles as wide as handlebars. Dozens of preschoolers pedaled their hearts out, showing determination, balance, and joy as they completed lap after lap on tricycles, bikes with training wheels, and scooters.
“This event is a great reminder that learning starts with movement,” said Early Childhood Coordinator Kelly Biondo.” We’re not just teaching letters and numbers — we’re helping children build confidence, coordination, and a love for school.”
With helmets securely fastened and streamers flying, the Trike-A-Thon became more than an annual event. It was a celebration of childhood — one filled with exercise, laughter, teamwork, and unforgettable memories.
At Lake Shore ECC, every pedal forward is a step toward building strong, healthy, and happy learners.
Go, little riders — the journey has just begun! 🚴♀️🎉
