Books | Sarah Ens

This meditation on the impact of human and ecological trauma explores the cost of survival for three generations of women living between empires. Writing from within the disappearing tallgrass prairie, Sarah Ens follows connections between the Russian Mennonite diaspora and the disrupted migratory patterns of grassland birds.

My Writing - Ellie Sawatzky

My Writing - Ellie Sawatzky

In this vibrant debut, Ellie Sawatzky rustles the underbrush of identity, seeking clarity on the nature of ownership and belonging. Haunted and inspired by old boyfriends, girls named Emily, ancestral ghosts, polar bears and mythic horses, None of This Belongs to Me plots a young woman's coming of age in a time of environmental and socio-economic peril.

Memories of Migration: Russlaender 100 Tour

Relive Your History on a Cross-Canada Train Tour!

This three-part Russlaender Centenary Tour will re-enact the historic migration of 21,000 Mennonites from Russia to Canada beginning in 1923. With the help of established Mennonites, the migrants found new homes in Canada in the aftermath of the Russian Revolution. This tour celebrates the faith of these newcomers, memorializes the challenges of resettlement, and acknowledges race and displacement in Canadian history.

William (Bill) Giesbrecht, September 26, 1932 - July 21, 2022

Bill, our kind and sweet Front Desk Volunteer between September 2016 and March 2020. It was a wonderful day when you could call the museum and hear Bill's caring voice greeting you at the other end. With deep sadness we miss him.

Henry Thiessen, July 14, 1938 - July 20, 2022

Henry, our warm and knowledgeable Gallery Attendant between March 2016 and March 2020. Henry intentionally looked after many, many visitors to the museum and we will sorely miss him, his sparkly personality and friendly smile.

Dora Becker, December 19, 1939 – July 23, 2022

Dora, our passionate and winsome Docent between March 2016 and August 2020. Dora also volunteered for the MHSBC from 2007 until June 2022, translating entire books along with letters from German to English. When she suffered a fall before Christmas 2019, it was her goal to return to her volunteer work as soon as possible, which she did, surprising everyone at GF Strong with her positive spirit and sense of adventure no matter what. She will be missed more than words can say.
