Understanding WGHS Service Learning Recognitions
Statesmen Service Award and A+ Scholarship Programs
These two programs work in tandem to encourage & reward service learning in the community
The Statesmen Service Award and A+ Scholarship Program are separate initiatives that have some overlap. The Statesmen Service Award is a school-level program honoring students who document 50 community service volunteer hours during one year. The A+ Scholarship Program is a state-level recognition with requirements in the area of attendance, GPA, math score, citizenship record, and completion of 50 unpaid tutoring or mentoring hours [up to 12.5 of those hours can be attained through career exploration job shadowing]. The A+ Scholarship Program is a merit-based scholarship that provides award funds to eligible graduates of A+ designated high schools who attend participating public community colleges, vocational/technical schools, or certain private two-year vocational/technical schools. Some four-year institutions also award scholarship funds for A+ designees.
All A+ hours also count toward Statesmen Service hours, but not all Statesmen Service hours count toward A+ hours. This is because all unpaid volunteerism counts toward Statesmen Service hours, but A+ hours must include a component of mentoring or tutoring. This can be mentoring or tutoring high school peers or younger students.
Ms. Simone Cunningham oversees the A+ Scholarship Program, and Dr. Jenna Klenke-Galbreath's office oversees the Statesmen Service Award. The Chelsea Center administers the GivePulse database used by students to log and verify completed service hours for both programs. The GivePulse database is the central location for all students to both find service opportunities and to record completed hours. All students have access to GivePulse through their Clever portal using their school email address, and students can stop by the Chelsea Center anytime with their Chromebooks to get help using GivePulse.
Some popular A+ service opportunities are listed below.

Parents: Would you be excited to show off your career and workplace to students?
Our valued community partners invest in the development of the next generation in many ways. Community partners participate in our experiential learning program as guest speakers, job shadow hosts, and internship sponsors. There is a way you can become involved within your current time constraints, and we think you will find it energizing and inspiring to spend a bit of time with the wonderful students at Webster Groves High School.
We'd love to hear from you and are open to any idea you want to bring to us! Please complete the form on our website page linked here and we'll be in touch!
Did you know that the Chelsea Center encourages career exploration by arranging monthly group job shadow trips?
These are the perfect way for students to begin to visualize what various future career paths might look like and carry the added benefits of learning to network and being able to reflect on the experience with a small group. The trips are always free, include lunch, and students are welcome to sign up with a friend.
