Week of Nov. 10th-14th Week of Nov. 10th-14th

Dear Westwood Families,

We’re excited to begin another wonderful week of learning and growth together! As we move through November, we want to take a moment to honor and thank all veterans for their service and dedication to our country. A very special thank you goes out to our own Mr. Ranger, our favorite veteran, for the many ways he continues to serve and inspire our students every day. We are so grateful for his commitment and the example he sets for our school family.

As a reminder, it is against the law to use your cellphone when driving in a school zone. Please help us keep all of our students safe at the crosswalks and sidewalks as we have so many who walk and ride bikes to school.

Wishing you a week filled with curiosity, joy, and a sense of wonder!

Note from Mrs. Santillo

November is one of the best times to teach and practice gratitude. This will be the focus of my lessons as I go into each class this month. Some ways you could join your student in practicing this skill could be to start a gratitude journal, share 3-5 things that you are grateful for from that day before bedtime, or find a person and share a gratitude or thank you letter with them.

World Kindness Day – November 13th

World Kindness Day is a wonderful reminder that even the smallest acts of kindness can make a big difference! We’ll be encouraging students to show kindness through words and actions—helping a friend, giving a compliment, sharing, or simply smiling at someone. We invite families to join us in celebrating by practicing kindness at home too—during my monthly lesson students will receive a kindness Bingo card for students and families to use this month. Together, we can make our school and community a kinder place for everyone!

On Friday, November 21st, all 5th grade students will participate in an important lesson about puberty. To help teach this class, Nurse Cara and I will be using materials from the “Always Changing and Growing Up” Program. The curriculum aligns with our health state standards and the same program will be used in every elementary and middle school across the Springdale School District. Students will bring home a letter soon with a QR code that provides parents access to preview the materials. If you decide you DO NOT want your child to participate in this lesson you can sign and return the form for them to not participate. If you have any questions about this please feel free to reach out to school counselor; Veronica Santillo at vsantillo@sdale.org or 479-750-8871.

Respectfully,

Mrs. Santillo

Our School Day

Our office is open from 7:20 am to 4:00 pm. We open the doors to our building at 7:20 am and school starts right at 7:45 am. Dismissal is at 3:10 pm every day except Wednesday when we have early dismissal at 1:50 pm.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

Car Riders:

  • If you have students in grades Kindergarten through 2nd grade, your students will need to be dropped off and picked up in the front of the building.

  • If you have students in grades 3rd-5th your students will need to be dropped off and picked up on the east side of the building.

  • If you have children in K-2 and 3-5, they will use the front car rider line.

  • For the safety of all students, please have their car tag hanging on the rear view mirror.

  • Teachers and support staff will be available to help students find their way to their classroom the first few days of school.

Walkers, walkers, walkers… and bike riders~

  • We are going back to the way things used to be for walkers and bike riders only. Please read carefully.

    • Students who are walkers or bike riders will be dismissed on the far side of the fence on McRay Ave.

    • We ask that parents do not congregate inside the fence for our students' safety.

    • We will continue to have a cross guard at the corner of McRay Ave. and Carlton St.

    • We ask that students and their families refrain from crossing in front of the building on McRay Ave.

    • Please do not cross McRay in the middle of the street. Make sure to use the crosswalk.

Your safety is our number one priority. We will communicate with you as soon as these procedures change based on construction updates. Thank you for your patience as we navigate all the new information coming our way.

We appreciate your patience as we work through all of these items on the first days of school. Our students' safety is our number one priority. We cannot do it without your help!

Parent/Family Information & Resource Center

How do I receive information from Westwood?

TEXTS: Click here to fill out a very short form that will add you to our text list. We use text messages to send out these weekly parent updates and reminders. We know texts are a convenient way to communicate for many of you, so please add yourself to the list by filling out this form. Multiple members of the same family can use it and each receive texts. If your phone number changes, you'll need to complete the form for your new number.

PHONE CALLS: We also send out phone calls through an automated system; you will receive these calls if your phone number is correct in Registration Gateway. If your number changes, you can update the information in Registration Gateway, or call the office to update.

SOCIAL MEDIA/WEBSITE: The weekly parent update and other announcements/stories are also posted on our school's Facebook page and website. We are working on activating our school's Instagram account also- we'll let you know when that's up and running.

PAPER NOTES: We also send out paper notes at times; most of these will be sent in folders that come home every Tuesday. Every now and then, we need to send information on other days, so it's a great practice to check the backpacks each afternoon/evening.

We don't want you to miss any information, so we put things out in lots of ways!
