Mental Health and Our Strategic Plan

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and it serves as an important reminder that mental health is a critical part of student success and overall well-being.

At Litchfield, we know students learn best when they feel safe, supported, and connected. That belief is reflected in our newly developed Strategic Plan, which prioritizes strong school climate and culture, family and community connections, and expanded social-emotional supports for students .

These priorities align directly with our Portrait of a Graduate, where resilience, empathy, and self-management are identified as key skills for lifelong success .

As we move through spring, it is a good time for all of us to reflect, reset routines, and make time for our own well-being. By continuing to support mental health and reduce stigma, we strengthen not only our schools, but our entire community.

State Funding and What It Means for Our District

Recent updates on the state’s proposed FY27 education budget reflect a continued tight fiscal environment. While there is a required increase to the Evidence-Based Funding formula, many districts, including ours, are still not fully funded.

This image shows the gap between state reimbursement and actual costs for required services. Costs the district must cover locally.

A major concern continues to be mandated categorical funding. These are services we are required to provide—like transportation and special education—but the state does not fully reimburse the cost. Locally, we see this impact clearly, as we are only reimbursed for a portion of these expenses and must cover the rest with local funds.

Over time, that gap adds up and directly impacts how we are able to allocate resources. Dollars that could otherwise support classrooms, staffing, and student opportunities are instead used to cover these required services.

At the state level, proposed increases would only maintain current reimbursement levels, not improve them, meaning this challenge will continue.

As we move forward with our budget, this is one of the key reasons we are planning conservatively and continuing to be thoughtful about how we allocate our resources.

MAKE IT PROGRAM

MAKE IT ended March with 27 students registered. They have ONE OPENING! In March they talked about when Spring truly arrives. They drew pictures and wrote in their journals and enjoyed being outdoors when they could.

Summer registration has also started and they are hoping for 50 students this year. They have thirty-three registered. If you are interested, please reach out to Mrs. Walker at the contact information below.

The Summer Theme will be "Diggin' It". They will be studying paleontology, geology, gardening, different types of soil, dinosaurs, and more.

They will be SERVING FREE MEALS (BREAKFAST AND LUNCH) THIS SUMMER FROM MAY 27TH THROUGH JULY 31ST. THEY ARE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. Any child from the age of 1 year through the age of 18 is eligible for free meals. Meals will be served at LECC.

LECC:

And just like that, we say goodbye to the 25-26 school year. It seems like we just started the year. There is a great amount of activity at the end of the year. This includes:

  • Pre K kiddos going to kindergarten provided parents a nice production as they "graduated" on to Kindergarten. They sang several songs and received certificates. Many took advantage of the props and photo opportunities.
  • Kindergarten parents will spend some engagement time with their kiddos to wrap up the year out at the community center as long as the weather cooperates.
  • Children will be treated to an inflatable obstacle course on Wednesday. To earn their way on for ALL of the sessions, they needed to1) do their best on their iReady assessments 2) provide appropriate classroom and playground behavior up until the time of the event. The inflatable was provided courtesy of the Litchfield PTO.
  • Many parents took us up on the Kindergarten open house last week. It was a very busy hour children and parents completed a scavenger hunt and also enjoyed ice cream. Mr. Favre provided a "tips for kindergarten" packet for families to take home and use to get ready for Kindergarten. Students also had the opportunity to pick out a book to take home.
  • We have many kiddos screening to enter Pre K. Children that turn 3 years of age ON OR BEFORE September 1st of this year are eligible to be screened to attend Pre K.
  • We have also been taking Kindergarten registrations. Children who turn 5 years of age ON OR BEFORE September 1st are eligible to attend Kindergarten. If your child did not attend Litchfield Pre K, please contact the office at (217)324-2851 to so we can work with you to register your child to start school in August.

LES:

The end of the school year at Litchfield Elementary School has been eventful to say the very least! There were several much-deserved celebrations of student success and staff appreciation, and a great deal of hands-on learning held the interest of our 2nd-5th grade learners.

  • The LES secretaries, Mrs. Jenkins and Mrs. Schmidt, were celebrated on the 23rd for Administrative Professionals Day. Thank you for all you do!
  • The FFA petting zoo was a hit once again! LES students loved petting the animals. This event is a favorite among the students!
  • Mrs. Short's class invited parents in for Fraction Fun Fest. It was well-attended, and the students had a great time!
  • Our students worked hard on their last iReady diagnostic of the year. They were rewarded with a game day in the commons along with popsicles and cookies.
  • Spring music programs were held for each grade level under the direction of Mrs. Henley. The students proudly displayed their musical talents to their families both in the form of singing and playing instruments at the Kilton Fine Arts Center.
  • Our 4th graders had a Career Exploration Day at LLCC here in Litchfield. Mrs. Jessie Blackburn hosted a morning of hands-on events showcasing different careers. Many students reported that this was their favorite field trip ever!!!
  • Students showed the staff appreciation during the week of May 4th. Along with cards and greetings, the students held Waving Wednesday, Thumbs-Up Thursday, and High-Five Friday to say thank you throughout the day to their teachers.
  • The music department hosted an assembly for 5th graders about their musical options for middle school. Many different instruments were demonstrated, and the choir sang.
  • The LES school nurse Mrs. Kirby was recognized for her hard work on May 6th. She is a busy lady, especially during breakfast, lunch, and every recess!
  • May 6th was a very busy evening at LES! The annual LES Art Fair took place, and students once again displayed their talent as their families toured the school viewing their masterpieces. Mrs. Hulliung, the art teacher, organized the event. Along with the Art Fair was Title I Night and the book fair run by Mrs. Irvin.
  • The annual 5th Grade Track & Field Day took place on Friday, May 8th. Ms. Ball orchestrated the event, and the students worked hard competing for the classroom trophy. After all was said and done, Mrs. Richter's class accumulated the most points, and they now possess the trophy.
  • The second graders went on a field trip to the Magic House in St. Louis. It was a hit! The students loved learning in that setting!
  • LES has two people leaving this year. Mrs. Jenkins and Mrs. Fleming were celebrated at a surprise party at Kismet Coffee for their years of dedication. They will be missed!
  • The first graders came to LES to tour the school, play on the "big" playground, and learn about expectations for next year. While there were some nerves, there was also a lot of excitement! We look forward to having them next year!
  • The third grade class went to the St. Louis Science Center for their field trip. After their busy morning of learning, they came back to Litchfield and feasted at Maverick.
  • On the 18th there was a root beer float wrap-up event for the Smart Buddy program at LES. Mentors and students in the program came together one last time before summer break. Mrs. Ellis planned the event.
  • The end-of-the-year attendance incentive will take place on the 20th. Students who were not absent more than two days during the months of March and April will attend a dance party in the gym with a professional DJ.
  • The LES school-wide spelling bee will also take place on the 20th. Each winner from the 18 classrooms will compete to be the LES Spelling Bee Champion. The competition will take place in the gym, and parents of the classroom winners are invited to attend. The students will view the contest from their classroom via Google Meet. The judges are Mrs. Carlile, Mrs. Ripley, and Mrs. Thompson.
  • On the 21st, LES will have a Fun Stations Day. Throughout the day classes will move from one activity to the next. There are 9 stations in all including a tropical sno truck provided by the PTO. What a fun way to celebrate all the great students of LES!

LMS:

  • We recently completed our final iReady diagnostic for the school year. Overall, results showed growth in both Math and Reading across all three grade levels. The most recent diagnostic also provided valuable data that will help guide instruction and planning for next school year.

  • On April 24th, our 7th grade students traveled to SIUE to visit the STEM Lab and explore opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Thanks to a grant from the Corwin Memorial Trust, all students were also able to enjoy lunch on campus during the visit.

  • Last Friday, we held our Fast Food Lunch reward. All students who improved their iReady scores earned the opportunity to have lunch at one of several local fast food restaurants. Students who met their typical growth goal received $5 to spend, while students who met their stretch growth goal received $10. 239 students received the reward! It was exciting to celebrate the hard work and academic growth shown by our students throughout the year.

  • Our 8th graders also celebrated the end of their middle school experience with a trip to The Main Event. The trip was a great opportunity for students to relax, have fun, and celebrate all of their hard work and accomplishments this year.

  • In preparation for next year, our 8th grade students signed a commitment banner symbolizing their commitment to graduating from high school in four years. On Thursday at 10:00 AM in Panther Gym, we will celebrate our 8th Grade Promotion Ceremony and officially send students on to the next step in their educational journey. While they are not graduating yet, we are proud of the growth they have shown during their time at LMS and hope we have prepared them well for the opportunities and challenges ahead.
