Annotating
Notice and Note
We are developing stronger reading habits through Notice & Note for Nonfiction. This approach teaches readers to pause at key “signposts” in informational texts—such as contrasts, extreme language, or numbers and statistics—to think critically about what the author is saying and why. Instead of just skimming for answers, students are learning to engage deeply with ideas, analyze purpose and tone, and make meaningful connections across subjects. These skills not only prepare them for the STAAR Reading and Writing assessments but also build the kind of real-world comprehension that lasts far beyond the test.
