FEEDBACK OPPORTUNITIES
LSR7 parents have two opportunities to give feedback to the district:
Culture and Climate Survey for Caregivers (Now - Oct. 30): Provide feedback on your student’s experience. This feedback is seen at the district and building level.
Continuous School Improvement Plan (CSIP) Survey (Now - Oct. 22): Feedback is used to create the next three year plan for the district. There is also an opportunity at the end of the survey to express interest in participating in the committee that creates the CSIP.
We encourage you to take both surveys. In total, they will take about ten minutes to complete.
MAJOR SAVER LSEF FUNDRAISER
Our Major Saver Kickoff is Friday, October 30th! This yearly fundraiser will run from October 30th -November 11th. You will have the option to purchase an online card or a physical card this year. Hazel Grove does benefit from this fundraiser, so thank you for your support!!
COUNSELOR'S CORNER
Hello Everyone! This month in our counseling lessons, we are talking about bullying. During this lesson, we discuss what bullying looks like, the different roles people can be in a bullying situation and what they can do if they encounter a bullying situation. There is a Parent/Guardian letter linked below for more information (students also were supposed to bring this home).
Also attached is some information regarding holiday assistance. We have several organizations here in the area who are helping with a variety of needs for the upcoming holidays. Please make sure to check out the flyer and see if any of those would be beneficial.
If there is any other kind of assistance that your family might need, you can reach out to me directly at jon.gibbens@lsr7.net or give me a call at 816-986-3316.
Regards,
Jon Gibbens, HGE School Counselor

HAWK HEROES OF THE HALLWAY
Hazel Grove is excited to share that HAWK HEROES OF THE HALLWAY is returning! HAWK HEROES connects adult volunteers (moms, dads, grandparents, aunts/uncles, etc.) to activities such as classroom helper, practicing basic math or reading skills, lunch or recess buddy, library helper, and special projects during a full day at HGE.
We will have openings for Tuesday, Wednesdays, and Thursdays beginning in October. You will secure the date that works best for you. During the course of your day’s schedule, you will get to eat with your hawk and go to their lunch recess. You will also get to volunteer with their class.
To be a HAWK HERO, please start by watching the video and completing a video response form on the HGE website volunteer page. These will be shared in Greetings from the Grove. Please note that you must produce a state issued photo ID on your school visits.
Step 1: Go to this Becoming a LSR7 Volunteer google slide show and read all of the slides.
Step 2: There is a Volunteer Acknowledgement Form on the last slide. If you didn’t click on it there, here is another link→ Volunteer Acknowledgement Form
Step 3: Select a date to volunteer from the HAWK HERO Signup.
Step 4: Contact Mrs. Jenkins (debraa.jenkins@lsr7.net or 816-986-3314) and confirm you’ve done everything.
Thank you for your interest! Please contact the office if you have any questions!

REPEATED INFORMATION:
IMPORTANT REMINDERS FROM THE OFFICE
We ask that you notify the office prior to 3:00 with any transportation changes for students that day. It is important that the front office is notified and not just the classroom teacher. If we do not hear from a parent about transportation changes, the student will go home by their normal mode of transportation (documented in PowerSchool and given to the teacher during Back to School Night).
Front office staff:
Email: mandy.trotter@lsr7.net and debraa.jenkins@lsr7.net
Phone: (816) 986-3310
Calling before 3:00 allows us to communicate these changes to the teacher, while also supporting the daily routines and processes that occur during this busy part of the day.
Student checkout:
It is difficult to check students out after 3:45 PM. If there is a need to check students out early for an appointment, please call the school and arrive by 3:45 to call them out of class. If you arrive after 3:45 you will need to join the car rider line.
*Thank you for partnering with us to ensure the safety for all HGE Hawks during dismissal.*
LUNCH VISITORS
If you want to have lunch with your child please make sure to bring a state issued photo ID with you. No siblings are allowed to join and all lunches will be enjoyed in the hallway by the office. Parents have the option to purchase a school lunch in the cafeteria, if they wish. Please remember we do not accept any type of deliveries for students.
CHARGING POLICY FOR BREAKFAST & LUNCH
The USDA requires that we notify all parents of our meal charging policy which you can view by clicking on the link at the end of this section.
You may add money to your child's lunch account by sending cash/check to school or depositing money on line through My School Bucks app.
If it would be a benefit to your family, you're welcome to fill out a free and reduced lunch form by clicking HERE.
Students are also allowed to buy extras, which can drain a child's account VERY quickly!! You are welcome to put restrictions on you child's account such as "Only allowed one snack" or "Extras only on Fridays" or however often you allow. You may do this by contacting our cafeteria manager, Toni Deeds via email @ toni.deeds@lsr7.net. Please also include your child's teacher in this communication. *Students with a negative lunch account balance will not be allowed to charge snacks*
If your child runs out of lunch money you will receive an automated call from the district with a reminder. If the balance continues to grow Ms. Deeds will reach out, as will Dr. Westacott or Ms. York.
If you want to know your child's balance or what they are purchasing, you can view that on the My School Bucks app. I encourage you to register and keep track of purchases and balances.

BUS EXPECTATIONS
Safe riding expectations and tips for a safe school bus ride:
In accordance with Board policy JG-R1 any offense committed by a student on transportation provided by or through the district shall be disciplined in the same manner as if the offense had been committed at the student's assigned school. In addition, transportation privileges may be suspended or revoked.
- The safest stop is the stop with an adult present.
- Be at the bus stop at least 5 minutes before bus arrival for regular Ed, and 10 mins before bus arrival for SRA, SPED, and GBEEC students. And stay at the bus stop at least 5-10minutes after your stop time.
- If you need to cross the street to get to/from your bus, make sure to stop and wait for the driver’s signal (thumbs up).
- Line up in a single line at the side of the road.
- Be aware of the danger zone outside the bus.
- Sit on your assigned seat, not on knees or backpack.
- Students must sit in their assigned seat the entire bus ride.
- Keep the aisle clear at all times. This helps avoid blocking the driver’s visibility.
- Speak quietly to each other, using your classroom voice.
- Keep hands, feet, and other items to yourself on the bus.
- No food/drinks/gum/candy on the bus.
- No profanity or other abusive language.
- Students are expected to help keep the bus clean and not purposely or carelessly destroy transportation equipment(ex. no drawing, coloring the seats, etc.).
- Damage resulting from misbehavior shall be paid for by the student/parent. Suspension from the bus will occur and continue until all damage is paid for.
- No Picture taking or video recording.
- No spraying aerosols on the bus. (Perfume, cologne, etc.).
- Students will show consideration for other students and the bus driver by being courteous and well-mannered.
- Talk to your driver if you feel unsafe. Report any bullying.
- Always follow the bus driver's directions.
Any action that would create an environment contrary to the District’s, Schools and Transportation Department’s missions will not be acceptable. If the action creates an environment in which learning, safety, and caring for others are not the primary focus, disciplinary action will result, including possible loss of bus service. Students are expected to follow safe riding expectations listed above.
Mobile Electronic Devices:
At the discretion of the school bus driver and building principal, electronic devices (including but not limited to Chromebooks and cell phones) are permitted to be used on the school bus. If permitted, the user must follow the expectations outlined in Board Policy and School Handbook.
- Must be in a backpack or other holder while boarding and departing the bus, so hands are free to use handrails.
- Sound must be muted, or the user must use headphones, earbuds, or something similar.
- No material in violation of District policy and procedures.
- Do not share content with other students outside the seat compartment they are in.
- Must not create a distraction for the driver.
- No video or camera use.
If you should have any issues or concerns and need to talk with your child's driver or supervisor, it is best to call the Transportation Office at (816)986-4BUS (4287) to schedule a time. If you need to approach the bus, please do not step into the bus. Signal to the driver you would like to talk and proceed to the driver's side window. For the safety of all bus riders, our drivers are instructed to close the entrance door when approached and direct you to their side window. Keep in mind the bus has other stops and a schedule to keep meaning the driver has limited time at individual stops. Under Missouri Law unauthorized entrance on a school bus is trespassing. For the safety of the students we transport, the Lee’s Summit School District supports this law and has posted warnings on all buses.
