What is the SUN Youth Advocacy (SYA) Program? What is the SUN Youth Advocacy (SYA) Program?

Support

SYA members team up with school staff to better understand how to mentor and build motivation in the youth we work with.

Working with Family

To better understand youth, SYA works with families through home visits, community celebrations, and support with meetings at school.

Out of school support

Youth are offered academic support, summer programs, and life skill development such as conflict management, understanding emotions, classmate issues, or identity struggles.

Connection

Youth and families are connected, when needed, to health clinics, career supports, and basic needs services such as utility assistance, food pantries, or other services.

Forms for Enrolling explained

Before I can support your student and family, you will need to read and complete the forms below. You can either verbally, over the phone or in person, decline or accept them or send the attached forms back to me through email.

Ideally I would meet with your student shortly after the forms are filled out to provide services to the youth before other services are provided.

I'm happy to explain the forms if you have any questions about them.

There are three forms:

  • County voluntary release of information form (Optional) - the form allows for multiple support networks to share information. It is not required.
  • Minor Participant Agreement and Liability Form (Required) - this form requests that students will not participate in a way that is unsafe or mentally/emotionally/physically harmful. Accidents happen however, we are not liable for any that may occur while with the student. Things may come up for the student that may be uncomfortable such as conversations around identity. It is always up to the student to participate.
  • Impact NW Release of Information Form (Optional) - this allows for us to share your information with other departments in Impact NW only.
Meet Nia Johnson, SUN Youth Advocate at Impact NW

Meet Nia Johnson, SUN Youth Advocate at Impact NW

Hi, my name is Nia Johnson, my pronouns are she/they, and I am the new SUN Youth Advocacy Coordinator at Impact NW. In this video you can learn a bit about me, how to contact me, and a bit about the program. I am African American, pansexual, part of the queer community, and neurodiverse. I love anime, manga, comics, and baking. I've had a history of selective mutism that made it difficult for me to speak and share my thoughts. You can reach me by calling or texting the number or by email, whichever works best for you. I support students with tutoring, homework help, and attending school meetings, and I help build personalized success plans that cover motivation, social emotional skills, and community. I also help with rental and utility assistance, food help, community connections, and home visits when helpful.
