What we are Learning in September What we are Learning in September

Math

Each unit students will learn three different related learning topics. We will typically spend a week on each of the topics. We will have a formal assessment at the end of each unit, and informal assessments and grades given during the three week period. We are so excited to see all the growth students have made in math already! We cannot wait to see what they continue to learn!

Unit 1 will focus on...

1. Describing position

2. Describe and compare length and height

3. Sort and count objects

Reading

Our reading curriculum is broken up into three bands. foundational skills, reading and responding, and writing. We will be doing each of these three parts daily.

Foundational Skills: This is the time where we work on our letters, and their sounds, rhyming. This month we will be learning the name and formation of all letters. We will be practicing writing our letters daily!

Reading and Responding: This is the time where we work on comprehending and analyzing what we read. We will read and reread stories based on our unit topics and talk about how we relate to them!

Writing: This is the time we will work on grammar and our writing craft. We will be writing class books this month, as well as things we see on the way to school, ways to be kind and class poems.

We will be starting and finishing Unit 1 and starting Unit 2

Unit 1- Off to School

Unit 2- Let's Be Kind

Social Studies

  • he month of September will be spent learning about "Working Together", and starting "History: Schools Past Present and Future"
  • We will have a Constitution Day Lesson at the end of the month

Working Together:

We will be exploring and answering this question, “How can we work together to be safe, make friends and learn?” In this unit, we will learn about classroom and school rules and why they are important. We will learn about our rights and freedoms and the responsibilities that come with those rights. We will also learn about what is fair and how fair is not always the same as equal. We will discuss how to solve conflicts by working together and compromising. As we learn together we will read lots of books, write, draw pictures and have lots of discussions!

Schools Past Present and Future:

students will learn about how their school day is similar and different from school in the past. First they will explore what is meant by past, present and future. Then they examine their “present” school day and learn how to put events of their school day, week, and month in chronological order on a timeline. Then students will examine pictures of artifacts from the past in order to compare their school day to a school day from the past. They learn about the school tools that were used, what students learned about, what buses looked like, what a classroom looked like and games and sports that children played.

PATHS

  • The month of September will be spent learning about different emotions!
  • We will be learning different strategies to help us with our emotions!
  • We will also begin to have a PATHS Kid of the Day. If your student is selected, they will be complimented by all classmates and a paper will be sent home for parents and guardians to add compliments! Be on the lookout for your student to come home with a PATHS Kid of the Day sticker on!
