Our Commitment to Virtual Learning Options

Information forCVLA FamiliesOur Commitment to Virtual Learning Options

Cabell County Schools is committed to delivering high-quality, accessible education to all students, including those who opt for virtual learning through the Cabell Virtual Learning Academy (CVLA). We recognize the importance of adapting to our community’s needs and ensuring that our educational services are effective and sustainable. Therefore, the board has approved a strategic restructuring of CVLA to maintain the essential services our students and families rely on.

Why Restructure?

The Cabell Virtual Learning Academy was initiated during the COVID-19 pandemic to provide our families with flexible virtual education options. Initially supported by the American Rescue Plan, this emergency federal aid will expire in September 2024. Acknowledging the program’s significance and our dedication to continuing flexible learning opportunities, restructuring is essential. The restructuring will be a change to how we staff and provide services to meet the needs of our virtual school families. This will guarantee the sustainability of our virtual academy, in meeting the needs of our students and families who prefer virtual learning opportunities. Families and students should not expect any significant changes or disruptions to the online learning experience students have come to know.

Our plan to restructure is guided by our commitment to:

  • Optimize student support: We will offer instruction provided by certified West Virginia teachers, ensuring the highest educational standards tailored to our students’ needs.
  • Ensure service continuity: We aim to provide uninterrupted educational services, including specialized support for students with disabilities, enhancing these vital services through our restructuring. Though K-8 students may access their instruction via a different platform than what they are used to, they will still have virtual face-to-face structured schedules, and students in grades 9-12 will experience no changes to their experience at all.
  • Address attendance challenges: Acknowledging the unique attendance barriers some students face, we will continue to offer flexibility to accommodate all students, fostering a supportive learning environment.
  • Maintain fiscal responsibility: Considering the expiration of federal American Rescue Plan funding, it is crucial to wisely manage our resources. Our restructuring plan will allow for more effective fund allocation across our district and allow us to continue virtual learning services that our families have come to expect.

What Changes Can Families Expect?

It was important to us that our students and families would continue to receive the same type of learning experiences they have enjoyed through CVLA. The same high-quality education and support will persist, including:

  • Continued High-Quality Instruction: At the elementary and middle school level, a virtual face-to-face, structured class schedule with certified West Virginia teachers will continue. At the high school level, continued asynchronous instruction through WVLearns will continue, maintaining the educational standards our families expect.
  • Technology Resources: As part of Cabell County Schools, virtual students will enjoy the benefits available to all district students, including access to high-quality devices like iPads for instructional use.
  • Special Education Services: Our unwavering commitment to students with disabilities ensures they receive necessary accommodations and modifications.
  • New and Continuing Opportunities: Along with ongoing activities and field trips, new afterschool programming will provide additional learning, growth, and engagement opportunities.

A Future-Ready CVLA

This strategic restructuring, mirroring successful virtual education models nationwide and within West Virginia, positions Cabell County Schools as a leader in virtual education. Our virtual program’s instruction and services exceed those offered by other online, charter, or private schools.

By enhancing our delivery model and continuing to provide comprehensive support and new opportunities, we are setting a new virtual learning standard that meets our students’ needs and ensures district sustainability.

We believe these changes will enrich our students’ learning experiences, preparing them for success both in and out of the classroom. We look forward to starting this exciting new virtual learning chapter with our students, families, and the entire Cabell County community.
