Steve Chapin

Stephen (Steve) Chapin will enter his 31st year of teaching health and physical education in rural southwest Minnesota this fall. The majority of his teaching career has been at St. James Middle/High School, where he has built a health education program centered on student choice, hands-on experiential learning, and deep connections between the classroom and the community. His work proves that exceptional health education does not require a large district, a big budget, or an urban setting. It requires a teacher who refuses to settle for the way things have always been done.
Steve is the 2026 SHAPE America National Health Education Teacher of the Year, the field's highest distinction. He is also the 2025 SHAPE America Central District Health Education Teacher of the Year and the 2023 MNSHAPE Health Teacher of the Year. He has presented at national, regional, and state conferences, including SHAPE America in Seattle, MNSHAPE, the MN School Board Association, the Society of Public Health Educators (SOPHE), and the Best Practices in HPE Conference in Stevens Point, Wisconsin.
Beyond his classroom, Steve serves as a founding board member of Honest Sex Ed Minnesota, sits on the MNSHAPE Board of Directors as Health Education Vice President Elect, and was a member of the Minnesota Health Standards Development Team. He has served as adjunct faculty at Minnesota State University, Mankato, and has guest lectured at Concordia College and MSU Mankato. He co-authors a monthly health and PE newsletter reaching over 500 teachers in the Minnesota HPE community.
