Did You Know?
Local Purchases Benefit Students' Education Through E-SPLOST
When you spend your dollars locally in DeKalb County, including Decatur, you invest in your students' education, safety, and well-being. Through the E-SPLOST program, one cent of every purchase made in DeKalb County is divided between DeKalb County, CSD, and the small portion of Atlanta Public Schools in DeKalb County. And, good news, this also includes Amazon purchases made from your zip code.
What is E-SPLOST?
Similar to the SPLOST (Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax), the Education SPLOST, or E-SPLOST, is a voter-approved, one-cent sales tax in Georgia applied to retail purchases made within the school district. This tax is specifically allocated for capital projects such as buildings, technology, safety enhancements, transportation and equipment.
In the November 2025 election in Georgia, E-SPLOST VII will be on the ballot in some counties, including DeKalb County.

September is Attendance Awareness Month
Why does attendance matter? Students who attend school regularly are more likely to perform better academically, stay on track with grade-level learning, and build the habits that lead to future readiness. Even missing just two days a month (excused or unexcused) adds up to more than 18 days in a school year. That's considered chronic absenteeism and can cause students to fall behind.
CSD is committed to working hand-in-hand with families to support student attendance. By raising awareness, sharing resources, and problem-solving together, we can remove barriers and make sure every child has the opportunity to succeed. See attendance resources for parents of elementary schoolers and middle/high schoolers.

DHS Army JROTC Holds 24th Annual September 11 Remembrance Ceremony
DHS Army JROTC held its annual 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony, honoring the brave heroes of the September 11, 2001, attacks, and celebrating the City of Decatur's local heroes, public servants, and past and current members of the armed forces. The program included a rendition of the national anthem from the DHS chorus, a flag ceremony from the JROTC, and musical performances by JROTC cadets.
DHS JROTC bestows 9/11 Remembrance Awards each year to those in the Decatur community who act in ways that reflect the virtues of those who gave their lives in the 9/11 attacks. The 2025 9/11 Remembrance Award recipients are Captain James Hutley, Lieutenant Elisha Blue, DHS teacher Nicco Salvador, DHS JROTC Cadet Evee Owens, Mayor Patti Garrett, Mayor Pro Tem Tony Powers and former DHS teacher Chris Billinglsey.
Thank you to the JROTC cadets, Colonel Johnny Richards, and SFC Bruce Case for hosting the event, and to YKK USA and Chick-fil-A for their sponsorship.
CSD Recognizes National Literacy Month with CSD Reads Week
National Literacy Month promotes reading, writing, and lifelong learning. Learners of all ages are encouraged to read, visit libraries, and engage in language-rich activities to develop strong literacy skills.
From September 29 to October 8, CSD will celebrate Georgia Reads Day and the beginning of Dyslexia Awareness Month by hosting various engaging literacy and awareness events. The week will kick off with a read-aloud by Superintendent Dr. Whitaker, followed by a Georgia Public Broadcasting (GPB) livestream featuring Georgia Reads Coach Malcolm Mitchell. Schools will participate in a "Buckets of Books" drive, collecting gently used books for Children Read Atlanta. Community involvement will be encouraged through guest reader opportunities, including parents, staff, and Board of Education members. Students will engage in the Rock for Dyslexia activity by painting awareness-themed rocks.
The week will conclude with another read-aloud by Dr. Whitaker and "Go Red for Dyslexia," where students and staff are encouraged to wear red to support dyslexia awareness. CSD families are also encouraged to attend the Decatur Book Festival, October 3-5, 2025. Let's read, CSD!

Snapshot of CSD: Schools Celebrate Literacy Month
In honor of September as National Literacy Month, Freddie the F.Ave Falcon came to roost at F.Ave's Scholastic Book Fair on Thursday morning, and students came away with new books, stickers, posters and an excitement about the possibilities of reading. Elsewhere at F.Ave, fifth-grade students participated in whole and small group read-alouds of a shared text, while kindergartners at Westchester practiced letter formation and built early literacy skills through individualized instruction on the computer.
Eighth-Graders Ask: Are Double Stuf Oreos Really Twice the Stuf?
Recently, BHMS eighth-graders dove into some delicious discussions about how to conduct a CER – "Claim-Evidence-Reasoning" – science experiment by learning how to hypothesize about whether Double Stuf Oreos really contain double the filling of regular Oreos, and how to determine the answer. They practiced important lab safety protocols and completed their research with energy, curiosity, and collaboration. So, are they really double-stuffed? Ask an eighth-grader to help you find out!
CSD Administering BASC-3 BESS in Grades 3-12

Together, we can ensure every child feels safe, seen and supported. Learn more in the Social, Emotional and Behavioral Screening (BASC-3 BESS) FAQ.
