Update on Snow Days
As we enter March, the warmer weather and longer daylight hours signal that spring is coming! However, snow days remain a possibility, so here’s an update on how they may impact our school calendar:
- Current Status: We’ve used two snow days and had one closure due to safety concerns, so the last student day is currently set for June 17th, assuming no additional snow days.
- Snow Day Plan: The district has four traditional snow days built into the calendar (initially five). If all four are used, the last student day shifts to June 18th. Any days beyond four will transition to remote learning days to avoid extending the school year.
Remote Learning: Families will receive clear expectations in advance if remote learning is necessary. Again, it will only become necessary if we exceed four snow days. Bagged lunches will also be available for interested families the day before a storm.
We hope this plan provides clarity as we navigate the remainder of the winter. Thank you for your understanding, and let’s hope for no more snow!

Ski, Stumble, Succeed: Dike-Newell’s Annual Ski Trip
For the last 13 years, the second graders at Dike-Newell School have embarked on an exciting annual tradition: their ski trip to Mt Abram! Bundled up and ready to take on the challenge, students spent the day learning how to ski, facing a few tumbles along the way but always getting back up with determination.
Skiing is more than just a fun winter activity—it’s a powerful way for kids to build confidence and resilience. “Every fall and every wobble teaches them to push forward and try again. It’s an experience that not only challenges their physical abilities but also strengthens their mindset, showing them that perseverance pays off,” says Principal McKay.
The ski trip is often a first-time experience for many students, and both groups of second graders enjoyed perfect skiing conditions, with great snow that made the day extra special. This annual trip reflects Dike-Newell School and RSU 1’s dedication to providing enriching experiences that some students might otherwise never have access to. Creating opportunities for all students, regardless of their background, is a priority that strengthens our community and ensures everyone has the chance to grow and thrive.
Cold Days, Calm Minds: Bath Middle School Students Practice Mindfulness
Students at Bath Middle School embraced the theme of mindfulness last week, recognizing its importance in supporting their mental well-being. With the cold and snowy Maine winter in full swing, prioritizing mental health has become more crucial than ever. Research shows that mindfulness practices can significantly enhance mental health, helping to reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression among youth.
During CREW sessions, students discussed their favorite ways to take a “mindful minute” for themselves. They discovered that mindfulness looks different for everyone—whether it’s reading, drawing, getting outside, practicing breathing exercises, or other calming activities. To put these ideas into practice, students were given the opportunity to choose from a variety of stations designed to help them start their Wednesday on a mindful note. Options included playing outside, going for walks, drawing, reading, connecting with peers, listening to music, playing board games, and spending time in the fitness room.
These activities are particularly relevant given the current youth mental health landscape. According to the CDC, suicide is the second-leading cause of death among individuals aged 10-34, with 22% of high school students having seriously considered it in the past year.
By encouraging mindfulness and offering a variety of activities that promote mental well-being, Bath Middle School aims to create a supportive environment where students can build resilience and thrive, even during the challenging winter months.
