Downtown Main Street approached the high school about bringing homecoming into the community . Students quickly agreed. This year the collaboration involved painting windows of interested businesses. The hope is to grow the initiative next year. See more photos and follow this week's activities on the RWHS Facebook page.

Downtown windows received a dose of Winger Pride on Friday. Kristin Bray's art students in periods, 1, 2 and 3 decorated participating businesses in preparation for homecoming, which runs Sept. 22-26.

Red Wing High School and Tower View Alternative High School students will select the 2025 homecoming king and queen on Monday, Sept. 22, kicking off a full week of activities. This year 14 students are vying for the crowns. The court includes king candidates Hokken Ellingson, Eli Flattum, Phili Lockwood, Calvin Nelson, Owen Rose, Trayce Taylor and Issac Wiles; and queen candidates are Kylie Bray, Ella Eggenberger, Cienna Fanning, Nora Hanson, Hallie Johnson, Abby Schmaltz and Neenah Schaffer.

The week will officially begin with Senior Sunrise on the football field. This is when the class of 2026 members sign the “Commitment to Graduate” banner that will hang at RWHS to remind them throughout the year to study hard and fulfill graduation requirements.

The football team will face Cotter Schools on Friday night, but first community members are invited to attend the homecoming tailgate party. Students will spend part of that afternoon preparing club booths for the party.

"We really wanted to make Homecoming a special experience for the whole community, so we're hoping people can come and enjoy the tailgating experience with us from 5 to 7 p.m. at the high school,” said teacher Nikki Roschen, who advises the Student Council and coordinates homecoming activities. “Tailgating will feature the Booster Club Brat Feed, food trucks, youth

football challenges, music by Brent and Sheena and entertainment for children – a bouncy house, gaga pit, 9-square game and corn hole. Come share your Winger spirit!” The homecoming schedule, including home athletic competitions, is:

  • Monday, Pajama Day – Senior Sunrise’ Coronation, 2:55 p.m., RWHS gym; girls tennis vs Lake City, 4:30 p.m., RWHS courts; junior varsity football vs La Crescent-Hokah, 4:30 p.m., RWHS field.
  • Tuesday, Tropical Day – Kahoot during fourth period; girls tennis vs Rochester Mayo and Waseca, 3:30 p.m., RWHS courts; boys soccer vs Austin, 5 p.m. 9A and JV, 7 p.m. varsity, RWHS field.
  • Wednesday, Neon Day – pep fests at the elementary and middle schools; 6:15 p.m. powder puff, RWHS field; boys volleyball follows power puff.
  • Thursday, Color Wars Day – Music trivia during third period; cross country invitational, 4 p.m., RWHS track; girls volleyball vs. Rochester Century, 4:45 p.m. 9A, 6 p.m. JV, 7:15 p.m. varsity, RWHS gym.
  • Friday, Winger Spirit Day – Pep fest; activity time; tailgating 5-7 p.m.; football vs Cotter Schools, 7 p.m., RWHS field; homecoming dance immediately following the game.
  • Saturday: Boys soccer vs Plainview-Elgin-Millville, 10 a.m. JV, noon varsity, RWHS field.

Come watch your Wingers! Come watch your Wingers!

The district has launched Winger Watch in time for Homecoming. This is a three-day calendar of "home" activities -- some during school and some after school -- of community interest -- and will be updated throughout the year. You will find Winger Watch on the district's homepage.

The goal is to make it easy for people to see what's happening today or tomorrow in our schools. Listings will range from elementary concerts, middle school musicals and high school art installations to sporting events, awards nights and public forums.

Looking for something to do tonight? Visit Winger Watch.

Need to know when tomorrow's band concert starts? Peek at Winger Watch.

Check out the NCWIT Aspirations in Computing Community.

Did you know that a gender split persists among computer scientists? Data shows that the imbalance currently is 79% male to 21% female in the field.

One component of Flight Path 2030 is to encourage students to consider technology-related careers. The National Center for Women & Information Technology AiC opens pathways into technology careers, celebrating students’ technical aspirations and connecting them to a national network for success. All students interested in computing, engineering, or technology — and who want to support peers facing gender-based barriers — gain immediate access to resources, mentors, peers, scholarship opportunities, and awards.

The AiC Award application window is open now through Oct. 28. Check it out here,

Students, you can bring your brave

On Tuesday, Sept. 16, Tasha Schuh and her husband, Doug, visited Burnside to share a message titled “Building Your Brave,” which teaches students to overcome their fears, choose a positive attitude, and live with kindness. While a theater accident at age 16 left her paralyzed from the chest down, Tasha lives a vibrant, fulfilling life, sharing her message of hope across the nation.

Remember, you are responsible for damage

Damage to district-issued Chromebooks kept our Technology Team busy during the 2024-2025 school year:

  • They made 597 repairs across the district
  • Decommissioned 80 devices for various reasons, including 21 due to student damage.
  • Issued 280 fines, with about a third of them to cover lost cords and to recoup the lost devices when students leave the district.

Students are responsible for loss and damage to their Chromebook, so families must pay for cracked or broken screens, spills, broken keys and more. There is a protection play to help with that, but enrollment is required by Sept. 30. The annual cost is $15 for one device and $30 for two of more devices.
