Principal's Message
Dear Hallinan Families,
The colorful falling leaves, temperature drop and drizzle of rain - well, sometimes downpour of water - are making it feel like fall at Hallinan. Please make sure your children are dressed appropriately for the weather because even though it may be cold and a little wet outside, we will make every effort to go out for recess daily. And, if your child is missing sweaters, jackets or coats, now is a good time to drop by the Lost and Found and look for misplaced belongings.
It's been fun for me to see so many families today at Parent/Teacher conferences. I look forward to seeing many more of you tomorrow. We value and appreciate the Parent to School connection, it's an integral part of supporting your child's success at Hallinan.
I've included student drawn portraits alongside of school photos of our PE, Music and STEM teachers - enjoy!

How to Find Your Child's iReady Report
iReady assessments, a diagnostic tool for the purpose of providing specific data to assist in instructional planning have been posted to ParentVUE for 1st through 5th graders. This tool measures student performance linked to end-of-year standards, so students have not yet been exposed to much of the material in the assessment questions. We use these scores in conjunction with classroom work as well as daily, weekly, monthly, and term assessments to identify students' strengths and areas for improvement. You can find iReady reports by clicking on this link: ParentVUE and then on the documents tab.
Library with Mrs Landau
October has been a busy month at Hallinan - especially in the Library! Our wonderful librarian makes sure to read books that reflect what students are learning about each month. It's National Bully Prevention Month so she read Stand Tall Molly Lou Melon by Patty Lovell to our Pre-K through 2nd grade students and The Juice Box, by Bob Sornson to our 3rd through 5th graders. She shared the books The Little Red Hen by Jerry Pinkey and My Two Border Towns by David Bowles to our students as we discussed the character trait RESPONSIBILITY. For Dyslexia Awareness Month, Mrs Landau read Back to Front and Upside Down by Claire Alexander and If You're so Smart, How Come You Can't Spell Mississippi by Barbara Esham. And to round off the month, and to celebrate the Statue of Liberty's Birthday, on 10/28, she read A Picnic in October by Eve Bunting and Saving Lady Liberty by Claudia Friddell. Please make sure to ask you students what they thought about these well chosen books. And, stay tuned for news about the Book Fair in December!
MTSS Parent Guide
Meeting students where they are at academically, personally, and social-emotionally allows us to support the whole child and provide them with a positive, supportive school experience. One way we do this is through our district Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS). MTSS is an instructional framework that includes universal screening of all students, multiple tiers of instruction and support services, and an integrated data collection and assessment system to inform decisions at each tier of instruction. Review the MTSS Parent Guide here. If you have questions, please reach out to your classroom teacher or Student Support Specialist Kate Urbanski.
Monday, 10/31 - Dress Up Day!
While we do not celebrate Halloween at Hallinan, we know it's an exciting time and we allow students to wear costumes to school as long as they abide by the following rules:
Costumes must be worn to school and must stay on throughout the day. Teachers will not be responsible for putting on, taking off, or managing costumes.
Costumes should be appropriate for all regular school activities like quiet work times, recess, and P.E. (no inflatables)
Costumes cannot include accessories such as guns, knives, swords, pitchforks or other items that make them scary, gory, or violent.
Costume masks, make-up and face paint are not allowed.
These guidelines are in place to protect the safety of your children and their costumes. We want students to have a fun AND productive day at school!
Lost and Found
Do you recognize anything here? It's a jungle, a well organized jungle thanks to Shelby Setter! Please stop by Lost and Found. We want all these jackets, sweaters and water bottles to find their lost children. If you are here for conferences, jog-a-thon or the Harvest Fest, please stop by and look through our ever-growing collection of found items. Whatever is left on 11/1 will be donated to a worthy cause.
Annual Application for School Volunteers
For the safety of children, volunteers are required to have an approved background check when volunteering in schools. Please click here: Volunteer Application for LOSD to start the online application and background check process.
PTO Information
Hello Hallinan Families!
Slice of Gratitude
The garden is full of fall flowers and PUMPKINS! The kids are getting excited for Harvest Fest, and thanks to our amazing parent volunteers (and their littles) unloading 400 pumpkins was quick and easy.
Thank you to Denali Allen, Michael Harrison, Melody Fettig, Reiko Hoenisch, Tia Thomas, Carly Voight, and Austin Saylor who came out this weekend. These parents created a magical Monday for all the kids in the school!
Harvest Fest
Our PTO-sponsored Harvest Fest is this Monday, October 31st. Your kid's Room Parents have emailed you about it by now but we would like to give you some details here. Inspired by last year, Harvest Fest and the fall room parties are one and the same. Kids will have a chance to decorate pie pumpkins, eat freshly popped popcorn (no seasoning or butter- just a little salt), and play games in the basketball area.
Room Parents were told they could ask their teachers for additional indoor time, supplement the PTO events (listed above) as they see fit, and to reach out for additional party helpers. We have seen some exciting plans and know this day is going to be a HUGE celebration of fun!
Flex Seating
As we mentioned in the previous email, the school is returning to its pre-Coivd mission of having comfortable, updated indoor spaces that enhance kids' emotional and scholastic learning. Debi Panning has been speaking to teachers and working on gathering the information we need to move forward with another PTO-sponsored round of purchases and kindly, another one of our flex seating advocates Brandy Begin sent us some information to pass along to all of you. Please see this Google Drive link below for further information and know we will continue to keep you updated:

October is Dyslexia Awareness Month
What is Oregon’s State of Mind on Dyslexia?
Oregon developed its first legislative guidelines for dyslexia in 2015 with the passing of Senate Bill 612 followed by 1003 in 2017. By law each school is required to complete a universal screening on all kindergarten and first grade students to identify those who are at risk for dyslexia. This law also mandates that each K-5 school have an extensively-trained educator who is able to recognize the warning signs of dyslexia and support students, teachers, parents, and the community. LOSD currently uses Dibels as our dyslexia screening tool. If you have more questions please reach out to your school’s literacy specialist. There also are three major federal laws that directly affect children with dyslexia. They are the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Gifted and Dyslexic?
Some kids with learning and attention difficulties have exceptional skills in certain areas. These kids are often called “twice-exceptional” (2E) learners. LOSD Student Services and TAG (Talented & Gifted) Services are both responsible and should work in cooperation to meet the needs of twice-exceptional students. The student’s abilities will determine appropriate instruction.
To read about twice exceptional students, visit UNDERSTOOD.ORG:
Twice-Exceptional Students | 2E Learners | Gifted and Learning Disabilities
Each week this month, we featured a message about dyslexia in this newsletter. If you have questions or concerns regarding our child’s learning, please call the school principal, TAG coordinator, and/or literacy specialist. You can also contact your school’s representatives for TAG-AC (TAG Advisory Committee) or Special Education Advisory Committee. Please see here to learn how to contact your school representative. We are here to help you and your child succeed.
