The Importance of Quality Time with Children
In today's world things are moving at a rapid pace. We are busier now than ever and we have everything at our fingertips with the click of a button. With all of this comes additional stressors not only on us, but on our children.
Maybe you have noticed an increase in negative behaviors with your children, or a lot of extra energy. If so, I would challenge you to ask yourself, how much uninterrupted, quality time are you spending with your child? How are you supporting your child in an effective way rather than a way that does not seem to be working?
Spending quality, uninterrupted time with children is crucial in their mental health and well being. Even if this is a 10 minute block of time that you need to pencil in on your calendar to make happen, it needs to be a priority.
Here are a few suggestions:
⭐Simply be with them. Your presence means a lot to a child.
⭐Put your phone down, turn off the tv and technology.
⭐Have a conversation. Most kids love to tell you about what is going on in their world.
⭐Go out side and throw a ball or hunt for bugs.
These are just a few examples. Remember, this may feel awkward at first, but keep going! The more time you spend 1-on-1 with your child, the more natural this will become. Feel free to reach out to me if you would like additional resources that you can use to connect to your child.
Character Trait of the Month
September (ACCOUNTABILITY) Self-Management and Integrity
Each month, our campus is focusing on specific character trait(s) within the E.A.G.L.E. framework. When teachers, staff, and other adults on campus see a child exhibiting the characteristics, they can nominate them for an Eagle Leader award. Eagle Leaders get recognized on the morning announcements, receive a certificate and prize, get their picture taken for the Eagle Leader bulletin board, and are recognized at the 9-weeks awards assembly. Check out this month's focus!
September Character Trait Calendar Challenge
We want to help reinforce our campus character trait(s) each month, not only at school, but at home as well. All teacher's will be sending these home , so be on the lookout!
We want to encourage you to complete this with your child. If they bring it back, completed and signed at the end of the month, they will receive a prize.

Accountability: Self-Management and Integrity
For the month of September we will be reading the book, "What Do You Do With a Problem? "by Kobi Yamada. This book teaches children that problems are a normal part of life and that avoiding them can make them feel bigger. When we face problems, we can learn, grow, and become more confident.
This story reinforces Accountability by encouraging students to own their choices, Self-Management by helping them manage emotions and think through solutions, and Integrity by reminding them to be honest and do the right thing—even when it is difficult.
How can you support your child at home?
Parents can reinforce these skills at home by helping children see everyday problems as chances to practice making good choices.
- Accountability: Encourage your child to own mistakes and ask, “What can you do to make it right?”
- Self-Management: Help your child pause, calm down, and think before reacting when a problem occurs.
- Integrity: Praise your child for telling the truth and doing the right thing—even when it’s hard.
- Problem-Solving: Instead of immediately fixing the problem, ask, “What do you think you could try?”
- Model It: Talk about how you handle small problems: “That didn’t go as planned, so I’m going to try something different.”
Family Reminder: We can’t always control the problems we face, but we can control how we respond to them.

Could Your Child Use Food Assistance?
Feeding Wise Kids provides our campus with weekly snack packs for those who are in serious need of food. The program works by putting food in the student’s backpack for him or her to take home on the weekend. The food is child-friendly, nonperishable and easily consumed. If you have any questions or are interested in signing your children up for this program, please contact Mrs. Henderson. lauri.henderson@decaturisd.us
