"Tips for Getting Kids to Talk in Math Class" - Episode 160

I don't know a single teacher who doesn't have their students "turn and talk." In this week's PD tip, Christina challenges math teachers to add movement to their turn and talks. Look through the graphic below to read about how adding STAND time to the traditional "think, pair, share" routine (aka a "turn and talk") prioritizes independent thinking, sharing with others, and a brain break.

DreamBox Classes of the Week DreamBox Classes of the Week

These classes had the highest number of average completed lessons for their grade level last week. This weekly reward comes with 10 extra minutes of recess. Thank you for prioritizing DreamBox and for helping our students close gaps and engage in enrichment opportunities!

End of Spring FastBridge Window End of Spring FastBridge Window

The spring FastBridge window closes this Friday. This is a hard deadline. Please reach out if you need help completing any assessments. We'll look at this data in the coming weeks once comparison data becomes available from other schools across the district.

This Week's SC Ready Essential Skills Check-Up This Week's SC Ready Essential Skills Check-Up

I will continue to create essential skills check-up quizzes for our third, fourth, and fifth grade teachers ahead of SC Ready on May 23. Many of our teams have been immediately analyzing this data and making action plans. We are quickly learning that some standards are worthy of whole group reteaching while others just have a few areas to polish off. As always, I am here if you need help finding resources or need help finding the time to realistically make this happen.

Spring Math MAP Spreadsheet Spring Math MAP Spreadsheet

Schoolwide data can be found at the link below. There are some reports that I generate that I don't publish for everyone to see (teacher impact data, teacher trend data, etc.). If you or your grade level have an idea for a different way for me to look at our math MAP data, please let me know!

Math MAP and SC Ready Correlation Math MAP and SC Ready Correlation

See the screenshot below for updated (and more holistic) correlations between math MAP and SC Ready math. I will use these in conversations with grade levels as we add another data source to our toolboxes and think about how to form groups and potentially move students up a performance category over the next four weeks. Remember that these are just projections and are not absolute.

If you would like to see these projections broken down by class and grade, please view the second tab on the math MAP spreadsheet that is linked above. This data is current as of Friday afternoon.

SC Ready Math Boost SC Ready Math Boost

All of our third, fourth, and fifth grade math teachers received a calendar invite for an "SC Ready Math Boost" on Thursday afternoon. These 30 minute sessions will take place the week of April 29. During this time, Ashley Zegilla (my coach) and/or I will come into your classroom and do a quick session with your students. Read the description of the event from Ashley:

I would love to come in and provide an SC Ready Math Boost to your students and model for students and teachers an activity that can calm nerves and slow students down when taking that state assessment. When we think about how we assess students in the classroom throughout the year and how we assess them on SC Ready, a few things change. SC Ready is 100% multiple choice, they have no anchor charts or resources around the room to use during the state assessment, and they are given both plain and graph paper to utilize. Any one of these changes can cause anxiety in those that lack confidence in their grade level math ability. I would be happy to come into your classroom to model the "brain dumping activity" if you would like. During this time, I would model how to create their own "anchor chart" for lack of a better title on their plain paper and graph paper at the beginning of the SC Ready Math test. I would challenge students to write down any notes, formulas, or drawings that might help them on the assessment. I would them show then how they could utilize the graph paper appropriately during the assessment as well as how colored pencils might be helpful. This is not a "one and done" activity. The teacher would want to take time a couple of times per week prior to the state assessment to practice creating their anchor chart which will help relieve some of that state testing anxiety.

If you read through this and do NOT want your class to participate, please send me a message.
