Academic Achievements
A total of 41 students in GWA’s Classes of 2026 and 2027 have been selected by the College Board for one or more National Recognition Awards, including the School Recognition Award, Rural & Small Town Award, and First Generation Award. CLICK HERE for the complete list.
Students earned this distinction by scoring in the top 10% of GWA’s PSAT results or by earning a score of 3 or higher on two or more AP exams by the end of 10th grade, while also maintaining a minimum 3.3 GPA.
We are incredibly proud of these students and their hard work, dedication, and academic achievement.
Answering the Call in ASL
The ASL 3 class, as a part of their Intro to Interpreting unit, set up a video relay call center simulation. Using our Google classroom’s video link and students' phones they set up a VRS call center in Mrs. Gahan’s classroom.
The class then divided up into groups of three, a “Deaf client,” a “hearing client,” and a VRS interpreter. The Deaf client had to come up with a scenario for why they were making the call, for example, “I’m calling my dentist office to change my appointment from Monday to next week,” they then used the video link to the interpreter to place the call to the hearing client.
The groups rotated each role, and everyone got a chance to experience what it was like to be a VRS interpreter. They did a fantastic job, Mrs. G was impressed!
Weather in Action
Mrs. Fulmer’s fourth-grade science class recently explored how tornadoes form through a hands-on experiment as part of their weather unit. Students created their own “tornadoes” using two plastic bottles connected at the top and partially filled with water.
When the bottles were flipped and spun in a fast circular motion, the water began to swirl, forming a spinning vortex that resembled a real tornado. To make the vortex easier to see, students added a drop of dish soap, which reduced the water’s surface tension and helped the tornado shape form more clearly.
This engaging activity allowed students to observe how rotating motion can create a vortex, helping them better understand how powerful spinning air can produce tornadoes in severe weather.
Future Scientists at Work in STEM
In STEM class, GWA students in grades K–5 continue learning what it means to be a good scientist while practicing how to use a variety of scientific tools. This week, students explored two different types of balances used to measure mass.
First, students used a simple pan balance to measure different rocks by placing a rock on one side and adding weights to the other side until both sides balanced evenly. They also had the opportunity to try a more advanced triple beam balance, carefully sliding the attached weights along the beams until the pointer aligned with zero.
This hands-on experience helped students develop important measurement skills while gaining a better understanding of how scientists use tools to observe and collect data.

Join Us in Making a Difference!
Literacy is a foundation for both individual success and community well-being. In Walton County, only around 43% of third-grade students are proficient in English Language Arts, meaning more than half are still developing essential reading skills that help them succeed in school and beyond. Books for Keeps helps to lessen this gap by providing books for children to read outside of school, exponentially increasing literacy rates. The Interact Club will be running a new and gently-used book drive from 2/10 - 3/16. By expanding access to books, tutoring, and family literacy programs, Walton County can help more children and adults build stronger reading skills, supporting lifelong learning, economic opportunity, and a more vibrant community for everyone

A Historic Run for GWA Girls Basketball
The GWA Girls Varsity Basketball team, led by Head Coach Lori Hines and Asst. Coach Grace Martin, wrapped up an outstanding season with an 18–5 record, finishing Region Runner-Up and 3rd in the State.
This year also marked the program’s fourth consecutive Final Four appearance (2023, 2024, 2025, 2026) — an incredible achievement that means our seniors advanced to the Final Four every single year of their high school careers.
During their four seasons, the seniors helped lead the Lady Bulldogs to:
• 2023 State Championship
• 2024 State Runner-Up
• Four straight Final Four appearances
• 79–21 overall record
We celebrate our outstanding seniors:
Lora Kate Malcom, Annalise Digby, Leah Lumpkin, and Taylor Kelly.
Additional honors this season include All-Region and All-State recognition for juniors Kenzie Johnson and Kennedie Cooper. Both Lora Kate and Coach Hines have been selected to participate in Saturday’s GIAA All-Star game.
Congratulations to the Lady Bulldogs on another remarkable season!
