Mr. Mauck's Musings

We have eighteen days until students return to Jasper High School! School will begin on August 11th at 8 am and students will report to their CCD class for ten minutes before transitioning to the gym for a welcome pep session.

Frosh Open House & Guidance Information

Jasper High School will be open to all Freshmen attending JHS next year on August 4 through August 6th from 8 until 3. We will have schedules ready for distribution and students may walk their schedules and get familiar with their locker and combinations. Mr. Jochum, Mr. Harris and Mrs. Hawkins have included some new information from the Student Academic Services Department. Please take a look at that section below. There will be a parent meeting on August 26th to discuss guidance information with parents. Mrs. Bea Cobo will hold a welcome Parent Night in Spanish for our Latino parents to provide the same information in Spanish. The Little Wildcats Daycare will be open when school starts. This is open to all GJCS employees. JHS will be undergoing expansion and renovation projects for the next several years. With the construction our maintenance staff has been working diligently to create a clean and neat learning environment for our students.

JHS Registration & Fees

Help JHS win the registration contest between the other GJCS schools. Complete your online registration today. Online registration for GJCS schools opened on the 20th and will close by the 3rd of August. Please complete all sections and make sure your address, phone number, and email are accurate. If you have changed addresses you will need to provide proof of residency. Students that have not completed registration will not be allowed to attend school. The state of Indiana passed a law eliminating textbook and curricular fees charged to parents. The state will reimburse the school $150 per student for textbook costs. The remaining costs will have to be covered by the school corporation budget. The only fees assessed at JHS will be $5 for a handbook and $30 for a student activity fee and some consumable lab materials for certain classes. Fees will be assessed at the end of August and will be visible in PowerSchool. Students who wish to drive to school will need to purchase a parking permit for $25. Fees may be paid by cash, check or online using My School Bucks.

PTO & Vocational Classes

I would encourage all parents to join our PTO. The PTO provides JHS students with post-prom, scholarships, and other activities. Dues are $25 per family and can be mailed or brought into school, or paid via Venmo. Membership in the PTO makes your student eligible for a scholarship provided by the PTO. Students will start Patoka Valley Vocational programs in Dubois and Pike Counties on August 12th. Students who are attending VUJ for programs (excluding HOSA students) need to meet in the CTIM Auditorium on August 12th. Students will report to their regular Patoka Valley Cooperative classroom at Pike Central and Southridge. Aviation will meet at the Huntingburg Airport hanger. Students need to bring their electronic devices on the first day of Patoka Valley classes.

Highlights of School Rules

Finally a couple of clarifications about some FAQ. JHS will not be able to offer free breakfast to all students again this year. The cost of lunch is $3.00 but breakfast is $1.50. Regarding the dress code, shorts are not permitted at Jasper High School during the school day without permission. The school is climate controlled and kept at a cool temperature. To remain in compliance with the new state law, students are not allowed to have access to their personal communication devices during school hours. All cell phones, smart watches, ear buds, headphones, or other device which connects to Wi-Fi or cellular data are prohibited. These devices must remain in the student's vehicle or powered off and in their locker. We are looking forward to a wonderful school year and graduating the class of 2027.

Welcome to our 2026-2027 school year! As your JHS PTO, we are excited to get the year going and plan some fun events for your students! In order to do this, we need YOUR HELP!! Your PTO dues of $25 per family are used to help us with these student-focused events and also award two $500 scholarships to graduating seniors. This past year we were excited to host Post Prom, award two scholarships and provide free ice cream sandwiches to the students. We are planning on doing these AND MORE this year! Remember, if you would like your student to be considered for one of our scholarships, your dues must be paid for the year.

Please send PTO dues to school (cash or check made out to JHS PTO) in an envelope. Mark on the envelope:

Vocational Classes

I wanted to share this information from Jarred Howard, Patoka Valley CTE director, regarding vocational classes offered to students at JHS.

The first day for Patoka Valley programs that are hosted in Dubois and Pike County schools, including programs at VUJ, will be on August 12.

Students need to bring their laptops/chromebooks/student devices to the first day of Patoka Valley programs. Students who are enrolled in programs at VUJ will need a device to complete their orientation on August 12th. All students enrolled in a Patoka Valley program at VUJ will meet in the CTIM Auditorium during the normal class time.

All Patoka Valley CTE Cooperative program information can be found here. This provides course information, class time, the class location, and instructor information.

Please review school contact information document and let me know if corrections need to be made. I send this document to all of our Patoka Valley instructors so that they know who to contact at each school.

General Information for the 26-27 School Year.

School Hours, Transportation & Cell Phone Policy

Jasper High School is open from 7:15 until 3:45. Students are not to arrive before 7:15 and need to be picked up before 3:45. We encourage all students to participate in extra-curricular activities which would extend their school day. Students should always be supervised during these activities. Please see the section below on parent/driver drop-off and pick-up as our procedures in the morning have changed. The main entrance is for parent drop-off in the morning . Parents picking up students after school should park in a parking space in the East parking lot by the tennis facilities and wait for their students to walk out to them. Parents are not permitted to park along any sidewalks. Students driving to school will need to purchase a parking pass. Passes are $25 for the year or $15 for a semester. Students that arrive before 7:50 will need to wait in the Cafeteria or the Main Atrium. Students will not be permitted in the academic area before 7:50 am. This is necessary for student safety. Cell phones, ear buds, headphones, smart watches and any personal communication device should be powered off and stored in the students' lockers or vehicles during the day. Students are not to have earbuds or headphones at school without teacher permission for a specific classroom activity. Violation of the personal communication device policy will result in a Monday Night School detention.

Attendance & Nurse Information

Attendance at school is essential for academic success. If a student must miss school please notify the school before 10 am by calling 812-482-1040. We do not accept parent notifications via email. We have three codes for absences from school, excused, unexcused with credit, and unexcused. An excused absence is for things like illness and professional appointments. Students that have over 10 excused absences for the year may not earn credit. Students that will miss school for other reasons need to fill out a pre-arranged absence form and get approval for the absence to be excused. A student who does not come to school and does not have a parent call or note will be considered unexcused. Please have your student to school on time. Most classrooms have the expectation of students being in the class when the bell rings. Students that are tardy to school or class for more than ten minutes will be coded as unexcused and will face more severe discipline. We have a nurse to care for your student should they feel sick at school. Students are not to bypass the nurse by calling or texting their parents. They should see the nurse and the nurse will contact the parents. Failure to follow this procedure could result in discipline. All prescription medications must be stored with and administered by the school nurse. Medication should be dropped off by a parent in the original bottle with instructions for administration of the medication on the label.

School Dress Code and E-cigarette Policy

Vaping/e-cigarette usage and THC devices have become popular with young people. These devices are horrific for one's health and lead to problems including addiction, anxiety, digestive problems, and seizures. They are illegal for anyone under the age of 21 and should not be on school property. Students in possession of alcohol or THC products will be suspended for 10 days, placed on a Form 16 expulsion and placed in the Wildcat Academy for a minimum of a semester. Proper attire and dress is an essential skill for employment and should be practiced at school. Students should not have exposed skin from the waistline to approaching the knee, including holes in jeans or shirts falling off the shoulders. Shorts are not permitted at Jasper High School. Shirts should cover the midriff at all times. Students are not permitted to wear hats or hoods at any time for safety concerns. JHS also prohibited carrying backpacks to class due to safety concerns. Backpacks should be stored in a student's locker between 8 and 3 pm. Large bags for after school activities may be placed in the LGI before 8 am. Costumes are not permitted except for certain dress-up days. JHS will host several spirit days where students are encouraged to dress for a particular theme. A good rule of thumb would be if you would not wear it to work you should not wear it to school. We encourage students to express themselves but there are a few rules to allow the school to function smoothly. I have outlined some of the most recent changes and frequently discussed issues but additional school rules and policies my be found in the JHS Student Handbook.

Cafeteria and Lunch Money

JHS contracts with a food service provider and we have a new service area in the cafeteria. Breakfast is no longer free but only costs $1.50 and the cost of lunches will be $3.00. Please discuss spending considerations with your student as there are several items that can be purchased in addition to a regular lunch. Students should not share their lunch numbers with others. Parents can deposit money via My School Bucks or send money with their students. Students can turn in lunch money in the morning in the cafeteria or the office. Please fill out a free and reduced lunch form each year to apply for reduced lunches. Many families do not understand they must apply each year. The school does not allow students to order food or bring carryout food into the building. Parents may not drop off carryout items for students. Of course, students may bring their lunch from home.

Extracurricular Activities

Jasper High School strives to provide an excellent education for our students. Please take a moment to read the JHS Academic Honesty Policy for students. Please review this policy and the expectations for students, instructors, and parents and the related consequences. To augment students' education we encourage students to engage in activities outside of the normal school day. We have a list of clubs and activities that will meet almost any interest. We have varsity sports, a state-level band, theater, student council, and a myriad of clubs. Please encourage your student to get involved with a group and develop their talents. Being involved in activities accentuates their high school experience.

Parent Information Nights

Save the Date, our Meet the Teacher Night on August 19th and guidance department will have a Parent Information Night on August 26th. Mr. Jochum, Mr. Harris, and Mrs. Hawkins will provide parents with essential information about graduation pathways, classes, and special dates for scholarships and college applications. More information about the evening will be shared.

JHS Student Drop-off and Pick-up

Due to the construction we have had to change some drop-off locations. On the JHS campus traffic flows from the south to the east, around the back of school and circles to the North Drive. This is a counter-clockwise pattern. Traffic will enter campus from the south 15th Street entrance or the South St. Charles entrance and travel east. There are four entrances to JHS in the mornings.

  • School buses will be dropping off students at door 9 near the crosswalk and then exit along the North Drive.
  • Parent am drop-off is at the main entrance using door #1. (The red highlighted route) Please pull forward along the sidewalk to allow more students to be dropped off at one time. Parents will enter campus via the south St. Charles entrance and drive up the main drive to the front of the school. Do not enter campus from the South off 15th Street as you will be traveling against the traffic flow.
  • Parent pm pick-up will be at door #8 on the east side of the school. (The yellow highlighted route) Please enter campus via the south St. Charles St. entrance and move around the south side of the gym toward door 8. Parents must park in a parking spot in the East parking lot and wait for their student to walk to the car. We will not be lining up along the sidewalk anywhere along the building. Parents will exit by driving around the back of school and leaving via the North St. Charles Street exit.
  • Students driving to school may enter from the South St. Charles Street or 15th Street entrance and park in the Athletic (South) Lot, Tennis (East) Lot, or the Soccer (Northeast) Lot. These students can enter through Door 6 or Door 9. (The green route for entering in the morning and the blue, orange, and purple routes for exiting campus.)
  • Students driving to school will need to choose their parking spot and purchase a parking permit for the school year. Parking permits are $25 for the year or $15 for just a semester.
  • I would like to thank the Little Wildcats for helping me color code the map!

StuCo

Student Council is an outstanding way to participate in the school community. Our officers will start off the year with the class bulletin board competition. Each month the classes will create a bulletin board based on a theme. The winning class earns points for the spirit competition. StuCo organizes the pep-sessions and three student lunches as well as community service projects. I would encourage you or your student to become involved in this student organization.

Construction Project

Jasper High School is undergoing a multi-year expansion and renovation project. I would like to share some of the details with our students and families. The current phase is to move the North Drive north to create space for a 14 room expansion on the North side of the building. This work is underway and will be complete by December 2027. All of our classrooms along the existing North Hall have been remodeled with new paint, marker boards, flooring and lighting. At the conclusion of the expansion project we will begin renovations and remodeling of our current academic classrooms. All existing partition walls will be replaced with permeant dry wall. Flooring, lighting and new marker and bulletin boards will be installed in each room. All if the original lockers from 1977 will be replaced as well as the hallway flooring and new paint. We have a beautiful school and take great pride in its appearance, but after 26 years of use it is in need of a refresh. The expansion and renovations will allow us to provide our students with an improved learning environment. We are fortunate to live in a community which values its schools and provides for its students.

CCD Class Replaces Homeroom

As part of the improvements outlined in the JHS Strategic Plan we are replacing homeroom with a College and Career Development (CCD) class all students will take. We have goals to improve attendance, the number of College and Career courses students complete, attainment of graduation pathways or seals and improved SAT scores. We have an outstanding group of teachers creating a grade level specific curriculum designed to increase our performance on these metrics. Students will still have dedicated time on Mondays and Fridays for participation in clubs and other school activities. On Tuesday through Thursday students will complete an activity in the CCD Canvas Course designed to improve skills aligned with our goals. These activities will vary from development of soft skills required by employers, to resume building, to SAT preparation, to Civics literacy or community service. The activities are designed to be completed during the 25 minute CCD class and should not take the entire period, allowing students to have time to relax or study for another class. We believe the skills covered in the CCD course are critical to help our students achieve their goals and improve their future employability.

JHS Jobs Board

Mrs. Jochum has put together a jobs board slide show with all the jobs employers have notified us exist in the community. If you are looking for a job check out these opportunities, JHS Jobs Board.
