Book Tasting Event — A Five-Star Success!
On Friday, March 6th, eighteen students were invited to attend the first Book Tasting Event hosted by Mrs. McFarland and Ms. Buckley in the library. Students in grades 3–6 learned about the event during library classes last week and were encouraged to complete a brief response form to indicate their interest in attending. Selected students also had the special opportunity to invite their book buddy from grades K–2 as their “plus one.”
During the event, students enjoyed seven “courses,” each featuring a different book genre. They sampled a variety of texts, enjoyed light snacks, and had dedicated time to explore and read. At the end of the event, each student selected books to take home and received a book bag, an “I Love Reading” wristband, a bookworm bookmark, and some takeaway snacks.
The event was a tremendous success, receiving a five-star rating from participating students! We are thrilled to celebrate our students’ enthusiasm for reading and look forward to hosting future literacy events.
Thank you for supporting a love of reading at home and at school!

A message from our School Counselor, Mrs. Widmann:
Today is National Day of Unplugging
What Happens When Students Unplug for a Few Minutes?
Today is National Day of Unplugging, a great reminder that some of the most powerful learning experiences don’t require a screen at all.
Emerging brain imaging studies show that heavy screen use is linked to changes in gray matter and cortical thickness in areas of the brain responsible for attention, memory, and self-control.
The good news? Even short breaks from screens can reset attention, boost creativity, and strengthen real-world connection.
Today might be a great day to try something hands-on and unplugged - all of the activities below are part of this week's activity line-up and can be done without screens(!):
- Build The Challenge Tower (Blocks or Manipulatives)Students work together to build the tallest tower they can. Hands-on math helps students visualize concepts, test ideas, and strengthen problem-solving skills.
- Create an Emotions Wheel with ArtStudents design their own emotions wheel to explore how feelings show up in their day. Creative expression supports imagination, emotional awareness, and flexible thinking.
- Step Outside for Simply Notice: StrengthTake a few quiet minutes outside to observe the world around you. Even brief time in nature can reduce stress, boost mood, and help students return to learning more focused.
- Play Emotions PictionaryStudents draw or act out emotions while classmates guess. Interactive games build communication, empathy, and collaboration.
- Lead a Mindful Moment with Triangle BreathingGuide students through slow triangle breathing or gentle stretching. Short mindfulness breaks help reset attention, regulate emotions, and support calm focus.

State Testing Letter
February 6, 2026
Dear Grantham Village School Parent/Guardian,
Each year, New Hampshire public and chartered public schools are required by state law (RSA 193-C) and federal accountability laws (Every Student Succeeds Act) to assess students using a standardized assessment. These assessments help evaluate student progress and guide instruction. To learn more, visit the New Hampshire Department of Education’s Office of Assessment webpage.
At Grantham Village School students in grades 3 through 6 will participate in the English Language Arts (Reading and Writing) and Mathematics assessments. Our 5th grade students will also be assessed in Science. Grantham Village School will administer these assessments in May. It is beneficial if you try to avoid scheduling appointments or vacations during the testing dates. Please make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep and good breakfast, prior to testing. Let us know if your child will not be here on the scheduled testing date as we need to arrange for a makeup time.
Statewide assessments are an important part of a student’s core educational program. They measure student mastery of core academic skills, inform classroom instruction, and support learning recovery. In addition to classroom assignments, projects, essays, and local formative and summative assessments, statewide summative assessment results provide teachers and parents with valuable insight into students’ progress on their path toward academic success.
Average Testing Times Grades 3-6:
English Language Arts/Reading: 60-75 minutes
Writing: 60-75 minutes
Mathematics: 60-75 minutes
Science (Grade 5 only): 60-75 minutes
Parents may access NH SAS practice tests by going to the NH SAS assessment portal at: Students and Families. Results of the assessments are typically available shortly after a student completes the test. Parents can view test results through the Family Portal using an access code. Please contact us to obtain one. We will also send individual reports home when they become available. While state testing is not our only focus, it is an indicator of your child’s progress and the school’s effectiveness in general. A parent / guardian can request an exemption for the assessment, by contacting Kristen Reed to request an exemption form. The form must be completed and submitted prior to the start of the assessment dates. However, it should be noted that a parental request for exemption does result in the school receiving a zero for that student. We are required to have at least 95% of students in grades 3-6 complete the assessment. If you have any questions related to the assessment administration, you may contact our School Counselor, Kris Widmann. Thank you for supporting your student! Sincerely, Kristen Reed, School Principal Kris Widmann, School Counselor
