Welcome, Ms. Buys!

Please join us in welcoming our new music teacher, Jessica Buys, to Wasatch Peak Academy—we are thrilled to have her join our school. Jessica Buys is currently enrolled at Utah State University, where she is studying psychology with minors in Spanish and social work. She brings experience as a private piano and music instructor, as well as a registered behavior technician providing ABA therapy for children with autism and other developmental needs. Jessica joined Wasatch Peak Academy to gain hands-on experience working with students in a musical setting as she plans to pursue a specialization in music therapy. Outside of school, she enjoys painting, drawing, snowboarding, soccer, and spending time outdoors.

Reading Tip of the Month

Did you know that 3 Simple Sentences to Boost Your Child’s Comprehension?

1️-Before Reading: “Hmm, I wonder what this book is going to be about?”

→ By saying this sentence, you are PREPARING them for the book and modeling for children the idea that readers THINK about the text before they even start reading. It encourages them to use clues from the title, cover, and illustrations to make a guess, which sets a purpose for reading.

Good readers prepare themselves for the text prior to reading.

2- During Reading: “Oh, this part of the book makes me think about…”

→ By saying this sentence, you are INTERACTING with your child and modeling that readers pause and think while reading and CONNECT to the text. They make connections between the story and their own experiences, other books, or the world around them. It strengthens their comprehension by relating the text to what they already know.

Good readers pause and think WHILE they are reading.

3-After Reading: “My favorite part of the book was…”

→ By saying this sentenc,e you are modeling the idea that readers EXTEND the book by THINKING about the text after they read it. This sets the foundation to summarize and synthesize texts. It also reinforces personal connections to the story, making reading more meaningful and memorable.

Good readers THINK about the book and what it means AFTER they read it.

If you liked this and are looking for more, check out @drbillen_thereadingprofessor for book recommendations and tips to help your children love reading! She is one of my favorite social media follows, and I hope to share more of my favorites here in the future.

Subs

If you or someone you know enjoys working with children, values education, and wants a school-friendly schedule, working at WPA may be a great fit. We are looking for subs who can work as needed. If you are interested in these positions, please reach out to Mrs. Pilkington at apilkington@wasatchpeak.org

Weather, Road Conditions, and Late Starts

We consider many things when deciding to delay the start of school so students can arrive at school safely. When the decision has been made about delaying the start of school, we will notify parents via text message. (If you are not receiving our text messages, please contact the front office.) We also post this information on our social media pages. Because we take the same feedback on road conditions into consideration, it is very likely that if Davis School District is delaying the start of school, we will be doing the same. We also understand that some families travel from outside Davis County or have other unique travel situations. We ask that families use their best judgment regarding road conditions and make safe arrival a priority. If Davis School District determines it is not safe to travel to school for the day we will offer online learning opportunities to WPA students for a distance learning day.

Cold and Flu...and Covid Season

Attendance is an influential factor that impacts a child's learning. As early as Kindergarten, missing school can have long-term effects on a child's education. A lot of research supports the goal for students to miss less than ten days per school year or less than one day per month. You can access your student's attendance through Aspire or contact the front office for additional details.

That being said, general guidelines for keeping your child home from school include.

  1. They have a fever above 101 degrees Fahrenheit within the past 24 hours

  2. They have had episodes of vomiting or diarrhea within the past 24 hours

  3. They are not well enough to participate in class

Work Hard and Be Kind,

Mrs. Pilkington
