APRIL HUSKIE HOWL
NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
As we transition into April, we're gearing up for an important time of the year: end-of-year testing. These assessments provide valuable insights into our students' growth and achievements, helping us tailor our support to meet their needs effectively.
The upcoming tests include the ISATs, ISIP Reading, and ISTATION Math. Here's a brief overview:
- ISAT: Grades 3-5 will be assessed in English Language Arts, Math, and Science (for 5th grade). Testing will take place from April 22nd to May 8th.
- ISIP Reading: This assessment focuses on early reading skills, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension, and is administered to students in grades K-3. Testing will be May 8th - May 16th.
- ISTATION Math: Covering a range of math concepts from number sense to algebraic thinking, this test is for students in grades K-5. Testing is scheduled from May 8th to May 16th.
To support your child's success during testing, we encourage you to ensure they get plenty of rest, eat a nutritious breakfast, and arrive at school on time. Your words of encouragement can also make a big difference, so feel free to send a note to your child's teacher.
Together, we can help our students feel confident and prepared to showcase their learning. Thank you for your continued support and partnership in your child's education.

NOTE FROM THE COUNSELOR
Happy Healthy Kids Tip
Rather than asking your child, “How was your day?” and them replying again with, “good.” Try asking, “What was the best part of your day?” “What did you learn?” “Who did you play with?” “Who did you sit with at lunch?”
Test Taking Tips
Part of the last quarter of school involves our state testing. This can be a stressful time for a lot of students. What can you do to help your student perform to the best of their ability?? Here are some tips from scholastic.com:
Optimize Brain Power- Make sure your student gets a good night's sleep the night before the test. Make sure that they get a good breakfast that morning as well. If you don't normally have time for breakfast your student can get one from the cafeteria when they arrive at school. Make sure your student has all the tools they need at school- pencils, erasers, paper, calculator.
Encourage Critical-Thinking- Read with your student and ask them questions about what they read. If your student does not like to read, read a magazine or comic book with them.
Know What to Expect- Talk with your student's teacher about what to expect on those test days. Which tests are they taking when? What is the test format? What does the school do for the students? How is it scored? Will the students be penalized for guessing, or should they just skip the ones they don't know? When will you get the results? What are the implications of the test, does it affect your student, the teacher, the school? Are the specific ways you can help your student prepare for the test?
Relax and Remain Positive- The best test-takers are confident and at ease. Help your student see that no matter how the test goes it doesn't affect their worth as a person. Help your student learn some ways to relax before and during the test, such as taking deep breaths or counting to ten.
NOTE FROM THE LIBRARY
April Reading Logs have been sent home! Remember to have your child read and get those turned in so they can be entered in the drawing for a free book.
As we are nearing the end of the school year, please check for any Library Books that may be "hiding" in your houses and get them turned in. Thank you.

Student Handbook
Student Handbook
*if you prefer a hard copy, we have copies in the office.
*Si prefiere una copia impresa, venga a la oficina para obtener una.
Attendance
We want your student at school! Attendance is so important to learning. A student who misses a single day loses 20% of the learning from that week.
Here are a few things to remember:
*Call the office or email sbeattendance@isd221.net to excuse your child if they are absent for any reason.
*If your child goes to the doctor, please ask for a note and submit it to the school. A doctor’s note will exempt an absence.
*We appreciate you calling the school and letting us know when your child is sick. While we mark the absence as excused, it is NOT exempt. These absences still count as absences. School attendance is vitally important to your child’s learning. We want your child to have all the tools needed to succeed.
Transportation Changes
- Please call in Transportation Changes to the office @ 208-365-0877 by 2:50 pm / Fridays 1:45 pm.
- If you need to check out your child during recess, we kindly request that you wait until the recess concludes or arrive before recess. This supports the safety of all students, as our duty staff can then focus on their designated supervision areas without any distractions. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation!
Parent Portal
Sign up Today for the Infinite Campus Parent Portal. A Parent Portal Account will give you access to pay for Lunches Online, view Student Attendance, view Student Grades (4th and 5th Grades), and receive School Correspondence. Call the School Office to be signed up and you will receive your User Name and Password to get started then you can download and use the mobile app.
Parent Pick Up Procedure
When pulling up in the pick up line DO NOT exit the car, if your student needs extra help, park in the lot closest to the school. This is safest method for all students and keeps the traffic flowing and from gathering on Idaho Blvd.
We ask that parents not park in the staff parking that is located on the corner of Idaho and Mesa so students and parents are not crossing traffic and in between moving cars.
Thanks again for helping us keep our students safe!

PENNY WARS LAUNCHES APRL 1ST!
How it Works:
Penny Wars is a competition between all the grades through a change drive (proceeds go back to the SB PTO). Labeled jugs will be in the foyer of the school labeled by the class grades.
Each penny is worth 1 point. Students can also add dollar bills to increase the points.
Silver coins are worth negative points according to their value. These are put in the jars of other classes with the goal of neutralizing the points they gained from their pennies, i.e., quarter = -25 points.
During the war and at the end, the PTO adds up how many pennies are in each jar and then subtracts the value of silver coins in the same jar.
The class with the highest total points, after the silver coins have been subtracted, is deemed the winner. The winning class will get an ice cream party.
