K-2 Universal Experiences
Lewisville ISD Gifted & Talented Services
Campus G/T Facilitators routinely push in to all K-2 classrooms throughout the school year and collaborate with teachers to lift the level of thinking and challenge for all students. They present planned experiences and deliver lessons that incorporate gifted characteristics to ensure multiple opportunities for gifted behaviors to emerge.
UNIVERSAL EXPERIENCES
Planned experiences are sets of high-level, open-ended activities designed specifically to elicit and identify gifted behaviors. They are intended to provide equal opportunities for K-2 students to show advanced characteristics when compared to their peers.
Each planned experience incorporates one or more of the seven gifted characteristics below:
- Accelerated Learning
- Advanced Language
- Analytical Thinking
- Meaning Motivation
- Perspective
- Sense of Humor
- Sensitivity
DATA COLLECTION
Assessment data from classroom experiences is particularly important to ensure that all children, including those who may be culturally, linguistically, and/or economically diverse, have equitable opportunities to be recognized for their gifted potential.
Data collected from planned experiences informs classroom instructional decisions and is used to create a talent pool of students to monitor over time.
G/T CONSIDERATIONS
Parents/guardians are contacted by the campus G/T Facilitator when their child’s performance meets criteria for a G/T services referral.
Students identified as gifted/talented in the U.S. make up approximately 6-10% of the total student population, so by its very nature, only a small portion of students will be eligible for services.
Every effort is made to ensure available data supports the need to begin the official qualification process, as standardized testing of ability and achievement is a lengthy process. Approximately 3-5 hours worth of assessments are administered over multiple days/weeks during the qualification process.
Students who qualify for G/T services remain in a general education classroom. Weekly pull-out services, with specialized curriculum delivered by the campus G/T Facilitator, begin the second semester of grade 2.
