Turning Down the Heat: Preventing Conflict & Counter Aggression (One Day)

September 26, 2022 (9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.): More than 80% of classroom problems are caused by 10% of students who challenge and undermine teacher authority. These students are skilled in frustrating adults and pushing the emotional buttons of even the most competent teachers. Most teachers are irritated by the behavior of select, challenging students. This is to be expected. Few teachers are trained to understand and acknowledge these normal counter-aggressive feelings. Problems develop when competent teachers stay angry at a student. When a conflict develops, teachers are less likely to perceive accurately, think clearly and reason coherently. Though competent teachers rarely initiate conflicts with students, they often keep them alive through their unintended, counter-productive reactions. Turning Down the Heat documents four of the most common reasons that teachers become counter-aggressive with select students and offers specific skills to manage conflict in the classroom. This unique training is about you and not your students; it leads to powerful insights which will change the way you think and behave when you are angry.

PEIMS Coding

The TEA PEIMS Coding Overview chart has recently been updated to reflect the new coding requirements. As of the 2022-2023 school year, the Dyslexia Indicator Code (TEC §48.009) is now reported two times each year. First, based on student snapshot (last Friday in October) and is submitted to TEA in the Fall PEIMS submission (due by the first Thursday in December). Second, based on the last day of school (or the student’s last day of enrollment) and is submitted to TEA in the Summer PEIMS submission (due by the third Thursday in June). In addition, when a student is not screened for dyslexia in kindergarten or first grade during the required window, code 03 is reported along with one of the 12 reasons indicating why dyslexia screening did not occur. This newly updated PEIMS chart can be found on the TEA Dyslexia and Related Disorders website under Dyslexia Resources.

New Inclusion in Texas Resources!

What makes special education special? It’s specialized instruction! These new resources from the state help us to identify and understand specially designed instruction for students with disabilities. Share these with your teachers and administrators.

  • Specially Designed Instruction: A Resource for Teachers
  • SDI Field User Guide

STAAR Updates

  • House Bill 3906 established that no more that 75% of a STAAR test can be multiple choice tests. Therefore, this year, the STAAR test has been redesigned with new question types. To learn more, visit TEA’s STAAR Redesign web page.
  • Special (Paper) Administration of Online Assessments are only for students for whom there is evidence that paper administration is necessary due to the student’s inability to access the assessment or accommodation in an online format. However, these will no longer go through an approval process through TEA. The approval process will be a local decision for 504 and ARD committees.
