Texan Roots
Each week we will be focusing on one of our Texan Roots themes and
how they apply to our Buckaroo Be's.
Last week our focus was on T- thoughful decision making. Stop, think, and choose the right thing—even when it’s hard.
This week our focus will be on E- each other- Empathy, Kindness and Compassion.
Partnering Together: Your help at home can make a big impact on the culture of our school family.
💬 Family Conversation Prompt: Ask your child, “What is one kind thing you did for someone today, or what is one kind thing you could do tomorrow?” Talk together about how that action might make the other person feel.
Building Positive Classroom Behaviors
Learning how to be a successful student includes learning how to make good choices, manage big feelings, and treat others with kindness and respect. Families and school staff are partners in helping children develop these important skills. What we practice at home and school makes a difference!
What we practice at school:
Be Safe
Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself.
Walk indoors and follow safety directions.
Use classroom materials and playground equipment appropriately.
Tell an adult when you need help.
Be Responsible
Follow directions the first time.
Take care of belongings and classroom materials.
Complete tasks and clean up after yourself.
Own your choices and work to make things right when mistakes happen.
Be Respectful
Use kind words and a calm voice.
Listen when others are speaking.
Take turns and respect personal space.
Remember that everyone deserves to feel safe, included, and valued.
6 Ways Families Can Help at Home
1. Practice listening and following directions.
Give your child one or two simple directions at a time. Encourage them to stop, listen, and follow through before moving on to the next activity.
Try saying: “Pause what you're doing, look at me, listen to the direction, and then show me you can do it.”
2. Teach children how to handle big feelings.
Children may feel frustrated, disappointed, angry, or overwhelmed. Help them identify their feelings and practice safe ways to respond, such as taking deep breaths, asking for help, or taking a brief break in a calm space.
Try saying: “It's okay to feel angry. It's not okay to hurt someone. What can you do to help your body calm down?”
3. Practice kindness, compassion, and empathy.
Talk about how others might feel and what your child can do to help. Encourage them to notice when someone is lonely, sad, or needs a friend.
Try saying: “How do you think your friend felt when that happened? What could you do to help?”
4. Build independence and responsibility.
Give your child age-appropriate responsibilities, such as putting away toys, packing their backpack, cleaning up a mess, or gathering their belongings. Allow them to practice doing things independently.
Try saying: “What can you take care of on your own today?”
5. Be consistent with expectations.
Children benefit when expectations are clear and adults respond calmly and consistently. Praise positive choices, set reasonable limits, and follow through with appropriate consequences when needed.
Try saying: “You may be disappointed, but the expectation is still the same. Let's practice making a better choice.”
6. Practice through play.
Use pretend play to practice raising a hand, waiting for a turn, sharing supplies, asking to join a game, and responding when an adult says no. Rehearsing these situations at home helps children feel more prepared to handle them at school.
Children are still developing the skills needed to manage their emotions, solve problems, and interact successfully with others. Learning takes time, practice, patience, and consistency. We will continue teaching, modeling, and reinforcing positive behaviors at school, and we appreciate your partnership in doing the same at home.
Transportation Changes
All transportation changes need to go through the front office BEFORE 2:00. You can call our main number at 512-847-3407 or email BHPlogistics@wimberleyisd.net. Transportation changes recieved after 2:00 may not be honored. Please get them in early. When we have to pull a student off the bus to get in the car rider line, it holds up our entire dismissal process.
Please do not rely on the teacher for transportation changes. They are busy teaching and may not be able to check email.
