Cooper Families,
We have a busy couple of weeks ahead of us! We have our conferences starting next week and we look forward to sharing all the amazing work our students have been doing. We also have our Trunk or Treat coming up on October 30th. If you haven't done so and are interested, please feel free to stop in and sign up for a trunk.
We have noticed an increase in absences this year. Attending school regularly has a huge impact on a student's academic success starting in Kindergarten and continuing through high school. It is important that we build this habit early so your child learns right away that going to school on time, every day is important. Good attendance will not only help students be more successful in school but those habits carry with them into college and at work.
Parents or guardians have the right to excuse a student's absence from school, for any or no reason, by notifying the school of the student's absence. Parents must call to notify the school or it will be considered unexcused. A student may be excused for up to ten days per year under Wisconsin Statute. More than five unexcused absences in one school semester is considered habitual truancy. If your child misses school due to a doctor appointment or is sent home sick from our nurse, these absences are exempt and do not count towards the 10 total days.
A student is considered tardy up until 15 minutes after the bell rings (9:10am). Three tardies equal a half day unexcused absence and are counted towards truancy.
Thank you for continuing to team up with us to ensure your child is receiving the best possible education. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to me by phone at 715-394-8790 or by email at kristene.stariha@superior.k12.wi.us.

Counselor Talk
In our Second Step lessons students will be seeing and using these posters to help them remember the three steps to stop bullying. We will be spending a lot of time on the importance of bystander power (also called being an Upstander) and how everyone is responsible for making Cooper a safe, respectful, and kind place to be. From the Committee for Children (the creators of our Second Step curriculum)....
“We know bullying is a serious issue in and out of schools and a threat to children’s safety. But there’s something you—and all of us—can do to help stop it. Click this link to see comics, videos, and read about ways to stop bullying.”

Cooper Garden
A note from the man in charge of our Cooper Garden, Mr. Jesse Olson!:
Happy Autumn, Cooper Elementary!
We've been finishing up the harvest in the Cooper Learning Garden this month. We had a great year! Here are some of the highlights:
- All of the jalapeño and serrano peppers from the fifth grade beds have been picked and are at my house, becoming hot sauce! We should have about 80oz of sauce! Mr. O'Connell and I will figure out something great to do with it.
- Last year's fourth grade Garden Club members (now fifth graders) picked the potatoes planted last year by Mrs. Ulvestad's class. They harvested nearly 20 pounds of potatoes! In a couple of weeks, we'll process them into potato chips to share with the rest of fifth grade!
- NOW is the best time to pick some sweet carrots! If you have students who planted carrots (last year's Krois, J. Olson, and Bergstrom students), take your kids out to the garden to pick some carrots! You'll find orange ones, but also red, yellow, white, and PURPLE carrots that stain your tongue like candy!
- SUNFLOWERS! The Kindergarten classes grew some GIANTS this year! Some were nearly 10 feet tall! If anyone would like a sunflower head full of seeds to plant at home next year, please feel free to take whatever's there.
- There are still some delicious little orange Sunsugar tomatoes ready to be snacked upon! Pick and enjoy ASAP, they won't last long!
- Community members picked and enjoyed cucumbers, green beans, sugar snap peas, kale, strawberries, raspberries, tomatoes, onions, lettuce, zucchini, and summer squash throughout the summer! We provided snacks and meals for many in our Cooper Community!
- Extra special thanks goes out to our Cooper PTA for donating funds for a water tank! This sturdy, farm grade IBC tank will last for years and years!
- Extra, EXTRA special thanks goes out to Mrs. Sharrow, the Cooper Summer School crew, AND our Volunteer Caretaker families for helping to keep things watered and growing this summer! Here are some photos from our pollinator garden.
Thanks for learning and growing with us! I'm excited to start planning next year's garden!

Pokegama Bay
If you have been following our Facebook page, you may have seen photos of some of our students at Pokegama Bay working with Rivers2Lake. We have a few more photos to share!!! While there, the students traveled through the following stations: canoeing, water science and searching for macroinvertebrates, disc golf, yoga and nature journaling. We have been so fortunate with our fall weather this year that has allowed so many great learning experiences for our students outdoors!!!
