Building Bright Beginnings, Creating Lifelong Shorians

What a wonderful night at the Shorian Early Childhood Center Open House!

Families dropped off school supplies, learned about fundraisers and Picture Day, toured classrooms, and had the chance to meet their children’s teachers and make new friends. It was the perfect way to kick off another exciting year!

“Let Your Child’s Career with Lake Shore Begin with Us.”

For Matt Schowalter and his son, Kaz, the new Early Childhood Center represents so much more than a new building—it represents a community investment in our youngest learners.

Kaz, who is 3 years old, has already experienced the difference the ECC offers. Matt shared that the new facility is a big upgrade from the previous space, with terrific learning areas designed with children in mind. From play-based learning and the new playsets to summer programming, the opportunities for students to learn, explore and grow are everywhere.

Matt also shared his appreciation for ECC Director Lisa Bonett and Coordinator Kelly Biondo, recognizing their commitment to the center, willingness to listen to parent feedback, and ability to adapt along the way. Most importantly, he said the ECC has helped build his trust in the educational experience being provided right here in our public schools.

For Isabelle Mata-DeCoopman, the ECC and Lake Shore represents generations of family and community connection.

Isabelle is the oldest of seven siblings, all of whom attended Rodgers Elementary and all of whom had Mrs. Pillars as a teacher. Isabelle’s own third grader, Lucy Mata, is in Mrs. Pillar’s class.

And now, Isabelle has brought her youngest family member, Norah Smith, to the ECC for Pre-K.

From being a Rodgers student herself, to watching her siblings attend, to seeing her daughter and now seeing the joy Gigi Diana has for Norah & Lake Shore Public Schools (great-granddaughter experience!), it truly is a full-circle moment.

These stories remind us that the ECC is more than a new facility. It is an investment in children, families and generations of Shorians to come.

Once a Shorian, Always a Shorian.

To our incredible ECC staff—thank you for the love, care, and dedication you bring to your work every day. We’re so excited for another year of helping our youngest Shorians learn, grow, and thrive!

A More Focused School Day Starts This Fall

In accordance with state law, beginning with the 2026-27 school year, Lake Shore Public Schools will implement a phone-free school day at all Lake Shore Public Schools.

Under the revised policy, personal communication devices, including cell phones, must be turned off or silenced and kept out of sight throughout the school day—including during passing time and lunch unless an approved exemption applies.

This change is designed to create more focused learning environments, strengthen student engagement, encourage meaningful peer interactions, and support student well-being throughout the school day.

We look forward to the positive impact this initiative will have on teaching, learning, and school culture across Lake Shore Public Schools.

For a copy of the new policy, visit https://www.lakeshoreschools.org/common/pages/GetFile.ashx?key=wESVAaq6.

New Teacher Orientation

The journey of a new teacher is a blend of excitement, anticipation, and a touch of nervousness. As educational landscapes continue to evolve, it's imperative to equip these new educators with the tools they need to navigate the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. A comprehensive and well-structured New Teacher Orientation can make all the difference in ensuring their successful integration into the educational community.

Topics included District Vision and Values, Instructional Practices, Lake Shore Culture, Mentor Support, Technology, Vector Solutions Training, Payroll/Benefits/Reimbursements, PowerSchool, Attendance, Professional Development/Conferences, and the Lake Shore Foundation. It was a full day of preparation for the new school year; This preparation is the bridge between aspirations and achievements.

Superintendent Dr. DiPonio stressed that raising kids to be the very best they can be is our mission as educators. He personalized this statement by sharing goals for his own 3 children. He said, "When my kids came home from school, I wanted 2 things as a father. I wanted them to be better, more developed people and to be happy." His message about being architects of learning experiences and having the opportunity to leave kids with a smile at the end of the day is an important one to remember as our new teachers embark on this school year.

Summer Programming

🎉 Summer was in full swing at Lake Shore!

Our halls were buzzing with excitement as students dove into KinderConnect, First Fundamentals, Summer Scholars, and more! ☀️📘

One of our favorite learning experiences took place in Ms. Gray's classroom, where students brought a story about wildfires to life. As they read, they even wore safety goggles, making them feel like they were part of the story. It was a perfect example of learning made meaningful through real-world relevance!

✨ In KinderConnect and First Fundamentals, students explored literacy through fun read-alouds, interactive songs, and hands-on activities. From writing their names to building vocabulary and phonics skills, our youngest learners got off to a strong start. KinderConnect students also learned all about what it means to be a student. Whether learning inside the classroom or exploring outdoors, they had a wonderful time building friendships, routines, and confidence.

📚 In Summer Scholars, students strengthened key literacy and math skills through evidence-based instruction, engaging games, and a focus on growth.

Our 2nd graders had hands-on fun with pattern blocks! These colorful shapes weren't just for play—they were powerful tools for building math understanding. This type of learning strengthened foundational geometry skills and helped students visualize how shapes work together.

Our 3rd graders became both authors and illustrators! Students responded to a writing prompt and then created illustrations to match, bringing their stories and ideas to life through both words and artwork.

Summer Scholars teacher Ms. Bruce shared a lesson that made a big impact:

"Our 2nd Grade Summer Scholars read Stronger Together, a story about Sammy, a little boy who learns healthy ways to manage big emotions with the help of Dash the otter. Inspired by the story, students created their own calming rocks, painting them with designs that bring them peace. Students created all different designs ranging from beautiful sunsets to adorable 'pocket hugs.' Now, when big feelings arise, they have a special reminder to pause, take deep breaths, and find their calm."

Here are a few student shoutouts from the recent weeks:

🌟 KinderConnect: Ramona Filer was a leader in our class. She was kind, silly, and always willing to help her classmates. We were so proud to have her as our Student of the Week!

🌟 First Fundamentals: Scarlett Pintoski worked incredibly hard in class and always did her personal best. She was kind and respectful to her teachers and classmates, cheered on the success of others, and shared kind words with everyone.

🌟 2nd Grade Summer Scholars: Madeline Clyne's enthusiasm for learning made our first week of Summer Scholars so much fun! She gave her all in every activity, and when the school day ended, we were always amazed at how quickly the time had flown by.

🌟 3rd Grade Summer Scholars: Owen did an amazing job! He worked incredibly hard, gave 100% every day, and eagerly participated in every activity. His energy and dedication were wonderful additions to our Summer Scholars group.

💡 We are so proud of our students and teachers for turning summer into a season of discovery, growth, and joy! Their enthusiasm, creativity, and commitment made this year's summer learning experiences truly unforgettable.

Bonus: Because of our amazing community, we raised $882 to support our LEAP (Learning, Enrichment, and Achievement Program) students! Learn more.

Girls in Gear: STEM Power Camp, For Girls Entering 6th and 7th Grade

Ready to build, design, tinker, and power up your imagination? Students joined us for Girls in Gear, a hands-on STEM adventure!

Day 1: Sparking Curiosity

Camp kicked off by celebrating influential women who have made a lasting impact in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Campers reflected on how they, too, can become future innovators and changemakers.

The day continued with hands-on learning as campers explored the basics of electrical circuits before creating their own using copper tape, batteries, LED lights, and soldering techniques. They also experimented with LittleBits, electronic building blocks that make learning about circuits fun and interactive.

To wrap up the day, campers learned how to safely cut PVC pipe and built their very own marshmallow shooters. Of course, they had to test them out with some friendly outdoor fun!

Day 2: Coding & Creativity

Day two focused on engineering, electricity, and computer science. Campers learned what an algorithm is before putting their knowledge into action with a fun game of "Code Our Teacher," where they wrote step-by-step instructions just like computer programmers.

Next, campers combined engineering and coding by building and programming LEGO® Spike Prime robots. They also explored Cubelets, modular robotic building blocks that encourage creative problem-solving.

The day ended with a meaningful service-learning project as campers designed and created adaptive toys using assistive technology concepts. These toys will be donated to students in our local community, allowing campers to use STEM to make a real difference.

Day 3: Building Confidence

Campers enjoyed an exciting visit to the Lake Shore High School Building Renovations classroom, where they learned about shop safety and gained hands-on experience using power tools. They built wooden projects that were proudly displayed during the camp showcase.

Back in the classroom, campers continued programming their LEGO Spike Prime robots, putting their coding skills to the test in friendly robot challenges. Using Cubelets, they even designed creative battle arenas for their robots, blending engineering, teamwork, and innovation.

Day 4: Celebrating Success

To conclude an incredible week, campers proudly presented the projects they created, showcased the skills they developed, and celebrated their growth as future engineers, coders, and problem-solvers. It was the perfect ending to a week filled with curiosity, creativity, confidence, and fun!

Whether building, coding, or problems-solving, they left the camp with new skills, a stronger voice, and a clearer vision of their future in STEM.

Leadership and Professional Development

Our Lake Shore Management team held their annual Summer Strategic Planning Retreat inside our new Community Center. At this meeting, district leaders continued to plan for the 2026-27 school year by discussing priority initiatives, legal considerations and updates from Attorney Jennifer K. Starlin, and future planning. They continue to carry out the district vision and values using our guiding principles as the focus.

Superintendent Dr. DiPonio closed the meeting with this sage advice. "If we take care of our people, our people will take care of our kids, and we'll be in good shape. Let's prioritize taking care of each other."

💡 Leadership isn’t about being the loudest in the room.

It’s about guiding your pride — or your people — through uncertainty with courage and clarity.

Shorian Success Camp

For the third year in a row, Lake Shore High School proudly hosted the Shorian Success Camp — a one-day event designed specifically for our incoming freshmen. This exciting program is all about helping students feel prepared, confident, and connected as they begin their high school journey.

During this immersive day, students explored all that Lake Shore has to offer — from academic programs and support services to extracurricular activities and athletics. But the camp went beyond just information: we focused on the essential tools for success, including organization skills, school spirit, expectations, and daily procedures. Most importantly, we aimed to foster a true sense of belonging in every future Shorian.

Before the program began, we asked two students why they decided to sign up and what they hoped to gain from the experience.

Sofea Manevska:

"I signed up so I won't feel completely lost on the first day of school. I want to learn my way around the hallways and feel more confident before classes begin."

Sofia Garvey:

"I wanted to get inspired to work hard in school and stay focused on graduating.

Facilitator Mrs. Saracino shared, "The transition to high school is such an important time in a teenager's life, and I wanted to be part of that transition while helping make it a positive experience." With support from Mrs. Rancilio, Mr. Lount, Ms. May, Mrs. Elkins, Mr. Spriet, and Mrs. Saracino, the team provided guidance and encouragement every step of the way.

A huge THANK YOU to our amazing National Honor Society students who volunteered their time to serve and mentor these underclassmen. Your leadership and kindness truly made a difference!

Orientations and Open Houses

There are so many reasons for students to get excited about the upcoming school year!

We invited students to visit their building for Orientation Days and Open Houses to learn more about what these schools offer and to connect with other new students. The presentations shared expectations, resources, and advice for a better student experience.

  • LSHS Presentation
  • LSHS Extracurriculars
  • NLHS Extracurriculars
  • KMS Extracurriculars
  • Masonic Heights Elementary Extracurriculars
  • Rodgers Elementary Extracurriculars
  • Violet Elementary Extracurriculars

Shorian Pride is more than a sticker. It is the feeling of unity, displayed by deep, long-lasting relationships in a family environment. It is when you find yourself calling Lake Shore your home and referring to your classmates as siblings.

Our student body still displays their spirit in a variety of ways. Students wear the traditional red and white gear to share their love for Lake Shore. They may choose from several extracurricular club options, meeting well after the last bell, because of their sheer dedication.

The transition a new school may feel overwhelming. New building. New schedule. New friends. Over time, those years transform from anxiety to excitement. It is the atmosphere at Lake Shore schools where students learn to adapt, develop skills of independence and responsibility, and prepare for new opportunities.

Thank you administrators and teacher leaders for your leadership, kindness, and extraordinary patience as you helped our students navigate the new year with your friendly demeanors and understanding mindset.

Clipper Day

Kennedy Middle School welcomed students back with Clipper Day!

Future Clippers had the opportunity to pick up their schedules, tour the building, practice opening their lockers, explore clubs and sports, and meet the friendly staff who will help make this school year a success.

Clipper Day is more than just a chance to get ready for the first day of school—it's the start of a new adventure. New students took the next step in becoming part of the Clipper family, while returning students reconnected with friends and looked ahead to another exciting year.

For Adeline Jones and Brooklyn Zunich, the start of eighth grade is about more than lockers, new classes and looking ahead to high school. It’s another chapter in a friendship that began way back in preschool.

Adeline is most excited to see her friends and spend time in choir — something she loves because, simply put, she loves to sing! Brooklyn is looking forward to being with her friends and having Ms. Elkins for class. The two have even shared the stage together in choir, including duos and trios last year.

Now, they’re helping each other navigate lockers, classes and all the little changes that come with growing up.

Adeline’s mom, Dawn, shared a sweet photo of the girls wearing their Future Shorian shirts back in their elementary days. Looking at that photo brought all the feelings:

"Seeing the transformation of these little girls grow into beautiful butterflies. Time has truly gone by fast, especially when you see how little they are in pre-K and already entering the eighth grade. It’s like you blink — one minute they are little girls and next they are young women."

She also reflected on the wonderful teachers who have helped them along the way, encouraging them to reach for their dreams while giving them the skills and knowledge to grow.

Kennedy Middle School is a place where students are challenged academically, supported personally, and encouraged to grow into their best selves each day. Through engaging learning opportunities, extracurricular activities, and a caring school community, Clippers build the confidence, independence, and responsibility that prepare them for high school and beyond.

As he begins his seventh year as principal, Dr. Chad Johnson is excited for what lies ahead. "I am truly thrilled about the chance for this cohort of students to establish their own legacy, following in the footsteps of those who came before them."

Whether students are arriving from Masonic Heights, Rodgers, Violet, or another elementary school, the transition to middle school can feel overwhelming at first. New classrooms, new schedules, and new friendships soon become familiar, and over the next three years, students grow into confident, capable leaders ready for their next chapter.

A heartfelt thank you to Dr. Johnson, Mr. Gaffigan, Dr. Kubiak, and the entire Kennedy Middle School staff for creating such a welcoming environment. Your leadership, kindness, and patience help every sixth, seventh, and eighth grader begin the school year feeling supported, encouraged, and ready to succeed.

Middle School Jump Start Camp and Orientation

Lake Shore Adult and Community Education and Kennedy Middle School recently welcomed our incoming sixth graders for Jump Start Camp, giving students the confidence and skills they need for a successful transition to middle school!

Throughout the camp, students:

🔑 Explored the school and learned their way around

🔒 Practiced opening lockers with confidence

📝 Built time management, organization, and study skills

💻 Learned how to navigate Schoology and manage homework

📖 Experienced mini-lessons from middle school classes

🤝 Participated in team-building activities and made new friends

One of the highlights was observing a lesson on identifying and managing both internal and external distractions, helping students develop strategies to stay focused, engaged, and successful throughout the school year.

Campers also worked together to solve clues and navigate the building—one hallway at a time! It was a fun challenge that helped everyone become more familiar with their new school while strengthening teamwork and problem-solving skills.

💬 Here's what our students had to say:

"I met awesome new people and teachers, and now I feel way more confident about middle school."

"Lockers? No problem! We practiced until we nailed it."

"I liked the building tour and learning where everything is—it's not as scary as I thought!"

"I'm excited to walk the halls on my own and even pick out my own lunch!"

"I learned what counselors do!"

"I feel so much more comfortable walking around the building now."

"Camp was very helpful. Now I know where I'm going!"

"I feel ready for the first day of school."

A special thank you to our incredible Jump Start Camp team—Amanda Seiberling, Melissa Oliver, Melissa Clarkson, Helen Buyse, and Julie Moceri—for creating a welcoming, engaging, and supportive experience that helped our future Kennedy students begin this exciting new chapter with confidence.

Summer Elementary Playground Meetups

Summer fun, Shorian style!

We had a blast connecting with elementary students and families from Masonic Heights, Rodgers, and Violet during our Summer Playground Meetups! It was the perfect opportunity to play, reconnect, meet new friends, and build excitement for the school year ahead.

We’re already looking forward to seeing everyone again at our Welcome Back to School Open House & Meet the Teacher Celebrations on Wednesday, September 2, from 5:30–7:00 PM at all elementary buildings!

We’ve also heard some wonderful feedback from both families and staff about the meetups.

Parents Jessica Gillert, Cassie Manevski, and Michael Fair of Rodgers Elementary shared what makes the Summer Playground Meetup such a special tradition for their families.

Jessica Gillert:

“This year was bittersweet as my son heads into fifth grade, making this our last Summer Playground Meetup. It’s always so exciting to see the Rodgers staff and reconnect with students we’ve missed all summer. It’s such a great way to kick off the school year!”

Cassie Manevski:

“It’s great to see old and new friends while enjoying a popsicle on the playground!”

Michael Fair:

“Watching the kids reconnect with teachers, friends, and familiar faces was a wonderful reminder of how quickly they grow and how special these little moments are. Luke was so excited to see Miss O’Shee and his kindergarten friends. It’s a great opportunity for the kids to catch up, reconnect, and enjoy a cold popsicle on a beautiful summer day. It may be a simple afternoon, but it’s filled with smiles, memories, and excitement for the year ahead!”

Mrs. Peacock, 3rd grade teacher at Masonic Heights Elementary, shared:

“The Masonic Heights Summer Meetup was a wonderful evening to reconnect with former students and families, catch up with colleagues, and enjoy some fun in the sun before the new school year begins.”

Mrs. Schlehuber, Principal at Violet Elementary, had an enjoyable first-time experience at this event. She reflected:

“Popsicles in the Park was such a wonderful opportunity to connect with so many of our Violet teachers, students, and families. I loved seeing the excitement and energy throughout the evening, and it made me even more excited for the year ahead. I’m so grateful to be part of the Violet All-Star community!”

Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make these summer gatherings so special! We can’t wait to welcome our Shorian families back!

District Safety Team

Lake Shore Public Schools has officially approved a three-year contract extension with The Fortis Group to continue placing armed, retired law enforcement officers in every district school building. This renewal ensures uninterrupted, professional security coverage across the campus community through the 2028-2029 school year.

Building upon this physical safety framework, the District was recently awarded a competitive state security grant to expand its School Resource Officer (SRO) program. The grant allows Lake Shore Public Schools to add an additional dedicated St. Clair Shores Police Department officer to the district's daily campus safety rotation.

Furthermore, the District has secured an additional $1.1 million in state funding through Section 31aa(5) of the State School Aid Act. This substantial financial award is explicitly designated to expand student mental health and behavioral support services. The funding will be used to enhance the district’s comprehensive care network by increasing the presence of qualified professionals—such as school psychologists, social workers, and counselors—and deploying critical intervention tools.

By combining the specialized campus presence of Fortis Group personnel, an increased municipal police presence, and robust mental health resources, Lake Shore Public Schools reinforces its holistic, multi-layered approach to student and staff wellness. The integration of retired and active-duty officers strengthens emergency capabilities, while the expanded behavioral health funding ensures proactive, daily support for students' emotional well-being.

"Our absolute highest priority is maintaining a secure, nurturing environment where students can thrive both academically and emotionally," said Dr. Joe DiPonio, Lake Shore Public Schools Superintendent. "Extending our trusted partnership with The Fortis Group, adding another St. Clair Shores Police Officer, and embedding $1.1 million in mental health support directly into our schools demonstrates our proactive, deeply balanced commitment to protecting and supporting our Lake Shore family."

Implementation of the expanded SRO program, the behavioral health initiatives, and the extended Fortis Group services will take effect at the start of the upcoming school year.

Brielle Starks and Tatum Anderson Named 2026–27 Student Representatives

Senior Brielle Starks and Junior Tatum Anderson will serve as student representatives for the Board of Education. They will sit on the Board for the 2026-27 school year, providing valuable input and student insight. Student representatives took their Oath of Office at the August 2026 Board of Education meeting. Learn more about Tatum and Brielle below:

A school of choice student, Senior Brielle is a proud Masonic Tiger and life-long Shorian! She has gained extensive leadership experience as she was NJHS President in middle school and has consistently been a class officer in Student Congress throughout high school. Aside from her active role in Student Congress, she can be found singing her heart out in Lake Shore’s auditorium. From her very first musical in 4th grade, to performing as the lead in the last 3 musicals and singing in the Fusion Show Choir, it is safe to say she dedicates many hours to rehearsing on the stage. She is also a member of Lake Shore’s cross country team and stage crew, as well as an AP and Honors student. However, outside of her busy schedule and demanding school activities, she enjoys camping, reading, and spending time with her family.

Tatum Anderson is honored to serve as Junior Class President and is dedicated to fostering school spirit, leadership, and student involvement throughout the school community. Previously serving as NJHS President in eighth grade, Tatum has continued to pursue leadership opportunities while balancing academics and extracurricular activities. She is an honors student, varsity cheerleader, and active member of the musical theater program. In all of her activities, Tatum strives to lead with positivity, teamwork, and enthusiasm while making a meaningful impact on those around her.

Teacher Cadets

Shoutout to our amazing Teacher Cadets from Lake Shore Public Schools!

These dedicated high school students (grades 10–12) completed a training program and are now serving as teacher aides in our Summer Camps — gaining real classroom experience and giving back to their community.

Each week, the cadets meet to reflect, grow, and learn more about classroom management, student relationships, and instructional strategies.

Teacher Greg Taylor shared, “They’ve been instrumental to the success of our camps — developing leadership, exploring the teaching profession, and connecting with students in meaningful ways. This gives the Teacher Cadets an opportunity to observe the wonderful elementary teachers and staff as they help the students."

He went on to explain in detail the role of our Cadets. He said, "The Teacher Cadets get to identify successful teaching strategies such as preparedness, positivity, flexibility and communication. Students get to create bonds with the students, teachers and each other. The Teacher Cadets also will play the role of the teacher in many ways including: reading books to the students, teaching lessons such as math topics, helping watch and even play with students at recess. The Teacher Cadets get an opportunity to identify if the profession of teaching is something they are interested in doing as a future career."

Counselor Consultant Sarah Pilarski added, “It’s hands-on career exploration. Some colleges even waive pre-student teaching because of this experience!”

Now in its 6th year, the Teacher Cadet program includes 13 students from Lake Shore!

2026 Teacher Cadets: Kendra Damm, John Friedrich, Evan Gattinger, Abigail Herbst, Anya Koroleva, Brook Miller, Ellie Mitchener-Rubino, Rylee Kapelanski, Addison Ripari, Brooklyn Tyll, Shawn Brosnan, Alana Rose Robinson, and Loriana York.

From working one-on-one with kids to leading full lessons, our Cadets are making a difference. THANK YOU for your service and dedication — we’re so proud of your growth and impact!

Friday Night Lights Came a Day Early!

The first home football game on Thursday, August 27th brought all the Friday Night Lights excitement a day early and with it came a whole lot of Hawaiian/Beach Night fun!

The newly installed multipurpose turf field gave our football team a fantastic new place to compete, making this night even more special for our school community.

The marching band, cheer team, and Shipyard student fans helped turn the stands into a tropical celebration! From Hawaiian shirts and floral prints to leis, sunglasses, and sandals, everyone brought the island vibes and made opening night one to remember.

Another highlight? Grandpa Todd Limbach had a whole new appreciation for the marching band experience as he watched his granddaughter, Kenzie Lamberger, take on her freshman year and join the marching band!

With his wife having graduated from Lake Shore in 1978, the family connection to the school runs deep. From marching band and jazz concerts to cheering Kenzie on with her saxophone, Todd was ready to enjoy her halftime performance.

Possibly our favorite part of game night? A sweet little Shorian dressed as Spider-Man delivering water to our football team!

What a fun way to kick off the season!
