Principal's Corner

Greetings, Boulevard Families!

It was wonderful seeing so many families at parent-teacher conferences! I hope you had the opportunity to connect with your child’s teacher and learn more about your student’s academic progress, strengths, and areas for continued growth. Thank you for taking the time to partner with us in supporting your child’s success.

Next Friday, we will celebrate Halloween with a costume celebration! Please review the flyer below for additional details. To help ensure a safe and enjoyable celebration for everyone, students may not wear masks or bring objects that resemble weapons. Please make sure your child’s costume follows these safety expectations.

Here is what we are learning at Boulevard this week!

4th Grade- What We're Learning

Fourth graders are learning to multiply a one-digit number by a multi-digit number using the partial-products strategy. Students are practicing how to break numbers apart by place value (hundreds, tens, and ones), multiply each part, and combine the partial products to find the final product. Showing each step helps students strengthen their understanding of place value and explain their mathematical thinking.

Ohio Learning Standard: 4.NBT.B.5 — Multiply a whole number of up to four digits by a one-digit whole number and multiply two two-digit numbers, using strategies based on place value and the properties of operations. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models.

Parent Tip: Practice multiplication with everyday numbers. For example, ask your child to solve 3 × 124 by breaking 124 into 100 + 20 + 4. Then calculate (3 × 100) + (3 × 20) + (3 × 4) = 300 + 60 + 12 = 372. Encourage your child to explain how each part contributes to the final answer.

Fourth graders are also exploring informational text about fossils and learning how to visualize information as they read. Students are building vocabulary, discussing how fossils provide clues about past environments, and practicing how to locate important details in a passage. We are working on using evidence directly from the text to support answers rather than relying only on what we already know.

Ohio Learning Standard: RI.4.1 — Refer to details and examples in a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text.

Parent Tip: Ask your child to read a short nonfiction passage about fossils, animals, or the natural world. Then ask, “What did you learn?” and “Which sentence in the text supports your answer?” Encourage your child to point to or underline the evidence before explaining the answer in their own words.

Fifth Grade Learning: Exploring Space! 🌎☀️

This week, fifth-grade students began exploring space by learning about rotation and revolution. Through hands-on demonstrations using balls to represent the Sun and planets, students modeled how a planet revolves around the Sun. Students learned that one complete revolution of Earth around the Sun takes one year and made connections between scientific vocabulary and familiar concepts of time.

Students also practiced explaining their observations, using new science vocabulary, and asking thoughtful questions about gravity, Earth's rotation, and eclipses. Their curiosity helped build a foundation for continued learning about our solar system.

Ohio Learning Standard: Ohio’s Grade 5 Science standards include Earth and Space Science concepts related to the Sun, Earth, and Moon. The specific standard code was not identified in the walkthrough notes.

Family Tip: Ask your child, “What is the difference between rotation and revolution?” Have your child demonstrate Earth's revolution by walking in a circle around someone representing the Sun. Then ask, “How long does Earth take to complete one revolution, and how do we know?” Encourage your child to explain the science using their own words.

Have a wonderful weekend!
