Message from Principal Wadkins
Dear Cleveland Families,
We are nearing the end of the first quarter, which can be a stressful time for students as they complete unit exams, finish projects and work to complete assignments that will be included in the grading period. We have two days of Flex this week to support students with these tasks. As a reminder, the first quarter grades do not go on the student’s transcript. These grades are a good indication of how your student is doing in class half way through the semester.
October also marks the end of the regular fall season of sports and our teams are really showing up. Our boys soccer team is currently ranked second in the state with a big game tomorrow away against Grant HS for the PIL championship. Also on Tuesday, our girls soccer play at home against Grant for their senior night. We expect to be cheering these teams in the playoffs as rankings will be locked on Thursday. Tuesday also sees our girls volleyball team taking on Grant HS in our gym. The Oregonian recently ran a profile article about our football team that has shown consistent tenacity and according to the article “scrappiness” in every game. That held true on Friday as they defeated Roosevelt in a very tight game winning 32-28.
Some of you may be aware of the initiative to change the name of Cleveland HS to one that better represents the values we hold as an inclusive and diverse learning community. We received PPS board approval to form our name change committee. The composition of the committee must be majority current Cleveand students with representatives from other stakeholders in our community. Please see the linked application form if you are interested in applying. The deadline for submission is at the end of the day on Friday.

Saturday's Success
Thanks to everyone who joined us this past Saturday! We repaired 3 picnic tables and painted 2 more green, raked leaves in the courtyard, picked up trash (mostly on the west and south sides of the school), cleared many brambles in the parking area west of the school, and covered up graffiti on the red shipping container/fence and elsewhere.
Our November work party will be on Sat Nov. 14, 9 am - noon - you can find a full calendar here.
