Thank you for the opportunity to serve the children, families, and taxpayers of the Upper Darby School District. As part of the School Board communication plan, the Board sends monthly updates to the school community. The information included in these briefs is not intended to be complete and does not replace official Board minutes. Official meeting minutes, agendas, reports, and presentations are available at BoardDocs. We welcome you to follow the issues the School Board is considering and to attend meetings to stay informed.

Invitation to Participate in the Special Ed Planning Process

The school district's special education plan is an action plan that describes the school board's commitment to ensure that a quality education will be provided to each of its students with a disability eligible for special education over the upcoming three years. You are invited to participate in the special education planning process.

Special Education Nights

Parents/guardians are invited to join these sessions to grow your knowledge base in the area of special education topics. Join the Special Education team for the January 25th Special Education Night featuring the topic "Continuum of Services/Extended School Year." The link for the meetings that will be held virtually will be provided in the Wednesday Folder. We hope to see you at the session!

Public Hearing on the Closing of Walter M. Senkow Elementary School

A public hearing will be held with respect to the planned closing of Walter M. Senkow Elementary School. The Board continues its efforts to return Senkow students back within district boundaries by transitioning those students to the expanded Aronimink Elementary School campus.

November/December Meeting Highlights

Capital Projects Moving Forward

The Board approved appointments of architects for designs of a new Elementary School Playground Master Plan and a new Secondary School Auditorium Upgrade Plan, as well as contracts to install school access control systems at district elementary schools and for HVAC system upgrades at the high school. Another upcoming project is renovations to the Drexel Hill locker rooms.

New Textbooks for English Learners - Approved

A new textbook series for elementary English language learners was approved to be implemented in the 2023-2024 school year. The new program, published by Vista Higher Learning, is aligned with the WIDA English Language Development (ELD) Standards Framework. The adoption includes interactive print resources, 6-year digital resources, teacher resources, and professional development.

Emergency Personnel Preparation Program - Approved

The Board approved a proposed secondary course sequence for Upper Darby High School beginning in the 2023-2024 school year. The four courses will prepare sophomores and juniors for certification in the areas of firefighting and emergency medical technician. Course work will be aligned to Pennsylvania Department of Education CTE standards and competencies.
