Hispanic Heritage Month: The origin of the piñata

The piñata is a beloved tradition for many children. Despite being associated with Hispanic culture, the piñata originates from Asia, according to Spanish Language Arts teachers. “It’s believed the piñata actually derives from Marco Polo way back in the days when he was traveling through Asia,” said Adan Martinez, a Spanish teacher at Socorro High School.

A massive thank you to all the incredible local public schools and Catholic high schools that joined us for our 7th & 8th Grade High School Night! Our gym was packed with energy, excitement, and so much inspiration for the future.

Our students and families had a fantastic time exploring all the unique pathways, academic programs, and vibrant communities available to them next year. We are deeply grateful to the high school representatives who took the time to speak with our future freshmen and answer their questions. The future is looking incredibly bright for our graduating class!

A Note from the SEL Corner: A Note from the SEL Corner:

National Depression Awareness Month.

October is National Depression Awareness Month.

  • Depression affects 4-5% of kids ages 3-17 years of age. Symptoms include: angry/irritable mood, behavior changes such as disinterest in previously enjoyed activities, physical complaints (headaches, stomach aches, etc), changes in sleep/appetite, and/or changes in concentration, grades and overall behavior lasting at least 2 weeks.
  • How can parents help? 1. Ask open ended questions and let kids finish before attempting to offer solutions, 2. Validate feelings offering praise for sharing how they feel, 3. Build healthy, consistent routines for morning transitions, bedtime, etc, 4. Encourage movement and time outside, 5. Limit screen time for phones, videogames and television, and 6. Seek out professional guidance (pediatrician, counselor, social worker). Building awareness helps destigmatize and empower our friends/classmates/family members/children to heal and move forward with support.
