Robert Down Principal's Update
May 21, 2026
Principal's Message
Dear Robert H. Down School Community,
This past week has been absolutely bursting with activity!
Our 3rd–5th grade students are officially wrapping up state testing, and Mr. Felix Diaz Contreras did a marvelous job coordinating his very first Spring Great Beginnings Band and Orchestra Concert. Meanwhile, several classes enjoyed incredible field trips—from kayaking and visiting Asilomar to exploring Santa Lucia and listening to the Monterey Symphony at the Sunset Center.
In the classrooms, our 4th graders proudly shared their Very Important Person presentations, and our 3rd graders had a wonderful opportunity to learn about Braille and the inspiring capabilities of individuals with visual impairments.
I also had a fantastic time watching our Robert Down superstars take the stage for Beetlejuice, Jr. on Sunday—huge thanks to everyone who came out to support the play!
It is clear our students and staff are working incredibly hard up until the very end to make this a memorable school year.
🏕️ 5th Grade Campout This Friday!
Our 5th graders are getting ready for their annual 5th Grade Campout right here on campus this Friday! A massive thank you to parent coordinators Jordana Scheer and Nathan Cohen for making this special tradition happen.
🌻Celebrating our 5th graders and PGHS Graduates!
Help us celebrate our PGHS seniors! Have your student(s) bring a flower or small bouquet to hand to a PGHS Senior (and Robert Down Alumnus) on Friday, May 29, so a flower arch can be made for the Class of 2026 ! Flowers can be from your garden or even the side of the road!
🌿 Donations Needed for the Robert Down Garden!
When students visit the school garden with Farmer Keith, they can now wander into one of our four new Theme Gardens tucked among the flower beds. It’s a space for independent play and wonder right in the middle of the school day.
We need safe, small, weatherproof, and washable items (no stuffed animals, please!) to bring these themed spaces to life. Nothing needs to be new!
Princess Garden: Fairies, castles, mushrooms, frogs
Rough & Ready Garden: Trucks, cars, trains, tracks
Mindful Kids Garden: Sweet animals of all kinds
Anything Goes! Garden: Surprise us!
Where to drop off: Please bring all garden donations directly to the Robert Down Front Office. Every little thing you donate becomes part of a child's discovery!

Birthday Book Club
This notice is to tell you about our voluntary program designed to build the RHD library and foster your child’s love of reading.
Here is how it works: To join the Robert H. Down Birthday Book Club fill out the information below (scroll way down to the bottom of this message to print the Birthday Book forms) and deposit it in the Drop Box at school along with a check for $20.00 (please make the check payable to the P.G.U.S.D. and write R.H.D. Birthday Book on the memo line).
When your child’s birthday month comes around Ms. Scanlon will present a new book in honor of your child’s birthday. Your child will be the first one to check out and read the book that has been donated to the library to celebrate their birthday. A bookplate with your child’s name will be affixed to the inside cover for all future readers to appreciate.

Flyers
Our teachers worked directly with 1st Day School Supplies to build next year’s lists.
That means when you order, you are getting exactly what your child’s teacher requested.
No substitutions.
No second-guessing.
It is a simple, organized way to start the school year confident and prepared.
Purchase of these items through 1st Day of School is optional and would be considered a donation to the school and is a fundraiser for PTA.
