Powerful Parents using PBiS
The biggest issue that we have been facing in the elementary building is defiance. When we look up minor defiance in our PBiS handbook, it is defined as "Students engaging in brief or low-intensity failure to respond to adult requests. Examples: When asked to do something, students say" No, I don't want to." Major Problem Behaviors define defiance as: Students engaging in continuous refusal to follow directions, talking back, and or delivering socially rude interactions.
We have seen 20 write ups in the month of November for defiance. The highest motivation has been to obtain peer attention.
Here are some intervention ideas for defiance that you can try at home:

Learning Using Your Senses with Mrs. Hoadley
When thinking about the different ways that our students learn, we think about various multi-sensory approaches. These approaches help engage more than one of our senses at a time. Some examples of these are visual, auditory, tactile, and kinesthetic. Studying spelling words is a task that all of our elementary students are given daily. While writing them in pencil is great, consider these multi-sensory approaches to help your learner!
Use magnet letters to spell the words.
Dip a Q-tip or the corner edge of a small sponge in water and practice spelling the words on a piece of paper.
Paint the spelling words with a paint brush.
Pour sand into a shallow box or cookie sheet. Use your finger to write the words in the sand.
Use pipe cleaners or twist-ties to form the spelling words.
Using a ziplock bag and shaving cream, put a small amount of shaving cream in the bag, seal it, and lay the bag flat on the table. Write the spelling words on the bag with your finger.
Write your words several times, each time using a different color of marker.
Dictate the words—and the correct spelling—into a tape recorder (use your voice recorder on your phone), and then listen to the recording and write the words.
WIN Intervention & Extension Time
Each student will spend a minimum of 20 minutes a week while at school on IXL. During this time, teachers available to help students as needed. We will focus on tested subjects during the intervention/extension times.
Some skills students need to work on may have been introduced in the classroom, some are skills that may be brand new to them - IXL offers teaching and reteaching opportunities for students! If your child wants to work on IXL at home, I would highly encourage the additional time - with the understanding that some skills COULD be new for them. If they are frustrated, please STOP working on that skill and save it for the intervention time when their teacher is present to help them!! The great news is, if your child applies themself and adds additional time, they could be named "Superstar of the Week" for their grade level! Ask your child more about this cool challenge/opportunity!
