Hispanic Heritage Month
Hispanic Heritage Month is observed annually from September 15 to October 15. It is a time to appreciate and celebrate the colorful cultures, rich histories, and diversity of the American Latino community.
Why Hispanic Heritage Month is Important
1. Strong Impact on America: Hispanic influences are tightly woven into the fabric of American life-think music, food, art, movies, politics, literature and so much more.
2. Population: Around one-fifth of the US population is Hispanic. The state with the largest Hispanic and Latino population overall is California with over 14 million.
3. Our Kids: When our kids learn about Hispanic Heritage month they are learning about Spanish history and culture. This benefits all of our students.
At the preschool and kindergarten level it's always meaningful to share a good story together. It gives families a chance to learn together and rich, vibrant pictures and stories can open up a child's eyes to all of the beautiful traditions and cultures in our world.
No matter how you choose to honor Hispanic Heritage Month with the kids in your life, be sure to create an open, inclusive environment that allows for questions to be asked. This will only help further a child’s exploration of the culture.
Our First Playdate was a Success!
We welcomed 71 people to Warren Township Park. We had a great turnout for our first playdate! We had 71 people come out to Warren Township Park and both parents and students had a great time. Our Kindergarten Family Coordinator, Kristen Carruthers, and Lavonna Garner, our At-Risk Facilitator, planned and facilitated this event. Assistance was provided to Spanish-speaking parents by Alejandra Balsamo. SRO Kelley Hansen stopped by to greet families. Due to the great turn out, we are planning our next event! Feel free to share any ideas or feedback with us.
Please see the message below that was sent from a parent:
“Thank you so much for all your work in the play day. I love how the tags were coordinated with the group. I do wish I would have done half and half on ours we will know for next time. I'm sure there are not many having kids in both the same school year. Anyways, it was run so well and our kids had a fantastic time. We look forward to the next event.”

Bus Evacuation Drill
On Monday, September 16th, we will be doing bus evacuation drills. The purpose of a bus evacuation drill is to teach students how to exit the vehicle quickly and efficiently in an emergency. This is a required drill for all students (even students that don't ride the bus to school) so that students are familiar with proper evacuation procedures and emergency exits on a bus.
Our bus evacuation drill will also review the important expectations for riding safely on a bus. As a parent or caregiver, you can help by reminding your child of our basic bus rules:
- Staying in their seat at all times
- Hands and feet to self
- No toys, food or objects are allowed on the bus or out of backpacks
- Quiet voices when talking to friends
- Listen to the bus driver
Thank you for helping our Wildcats remember our ROAR expectations!
Green Apple Day of Service
Modeling for your child at an early age that even the smallest hands can beautify and care for the planet, their learning place and the environment is a powerful message to send. Our annual Green Apple Day of Service is an engaging way to volunteer as a family, have fun and make a difference in your community all at the same time! This will be our 10th year hosting this special day of service and each year we commit to making the Primary School a better learning environment for our students and staff. Join us and bring the whole family on Saturday, September 28th, rain or shine! Details below!
Materials Needed!
Check out the list of materials we will be using on Green Apple Day, if you plan to attend or can't make our event, another way to help us on our day of service is to donate an item from our list. We are looking forward to a great day of volunteerism and working together and a school community.
It's Always a Great Day to be at Woodland Primary!
A Day in the Life of a Primary Wildcat!
We are inviting our families to attend a special evening hosted by our staff to give you a detailed look at your child's daily life as a Woodland Wildcat. As a parent, you see your child off to the bus or drop them at the doors each school day, but what happens next? That's where we come in! We will be covering their daily schedule, what their lunch/recess, snack, playtime and other special activities look like. We want you to know what your child experiences as prek student or kindergarten student at Primary each day. Please look at the schedules below as they are designated by program. You will also receive an invitation by your child's teacher as the event gets closer.
Tuesday, September 24th, 5:30 p.m.-6:45 p.m. Monolingual Kindergarten
Wednesday, September 25th, 5:30 p.m.-6:45 p.m. Dual Language Kindergarten
Wednesday, September 25th, 5:30 p.m.-6:45 p.m. Early Childhood & WELE
Save the Date! We hope to see all of our families at this very important event. It's a great chance for us to build the connection between home and school, we're in this together!
