Gates 4th graders compete in Amazing Shake
Fourth graders from Gates Elementary participated in "The Amazing Shake," a high-octane live competition where students demonstrate their prowess in professionalism skills to community leaders. The event, developed by the Georgia-based Ron Clark Academy, was held at the Robert Williams Nature and Historical Learning Center in Davison Township. Teacher Mr. Brad Fuson attended the Ron Clark Academy several years ago as a recipient of the Davison Educational Foundation Professional Scholar Award. Ron Clark is an educator and subject of the 2006 movie, "The Ron Clark Story."
On Tuesday, more than 70 students competed and worked their way through six stations that tested their charm, manners, empathy, discipline, respect, professional skills and their critical thinking in different scenarios. During the Amazing Shake, students learn and develop professional qualities — from the mechanics of a proper handshake to how to “work the room” — so that they are able to present themselves exceptionally well for opportunities today and in the future. Members of the community served as judges at the case-scenario stations.
The top ten students with the highest scores were awarded medals, and the top three also received trophies. They included:

A drywall champ and a shed for the Track team
Students in Construction classes at Davison High School have not had a chance yet to set down their hammers what with the construction of a new shed for the track team and completing a unit on drywall.
Construction II class started working on the framing for the track shed in March. Once the weather got nice, students started the on-site assembly. The project was completed just before the seniors left a week ago. The shed, which will be used to store track equipment, is located by the shot put pits way behind the stadium.
The students in Construction I classes have now finished their unit on drywall finishing and, in this class's true fashion, held a contest to determine who was best at making drywall repairs. Students could work individually or in groups to repair the walls that were previously made - and subsequently damaged following another contest - by students.
First place: Caden Day (pictured above)
Second place: Tori Schumacher and Kenzie Arden
Third place: Tucker Gratsch and Brandon Glisson
Fourth place: Dawson Lauwers and Logan Crafts
