While this form does qualify families for Free and Reduced Meals, please compete regardless as it also can qualify both families and the school for additional resources, etc.

This year, I am asking for all families to complete the form. You can access the form on the GCPS website: https://www.nlappscloud.com/District.aspx#loaded

School Visitor Procedures School Visitor Procedures

Parents,

In order to ensure school safety, please review the following procedures for visiting the building.

Once a visitor is buzzed into the front door, they will proceed to the table on the left side near the front desk. Visitors will have to scan a picture ID at that table before access to the building can be granted.

Visitors will not be buzzed in for the following, but will be asked to wait in the vestibule:

  • checkouts
  • dropping items off for students (table will be set in the vestibule for these items).

As always, appointments are required for classroom visits, meetings, or to speak with an administrator. The front desk will have a copy of all appointments for each day.

Dismissal Procedure Updates and Reminders Dismissal Procedure Updates and Reminders

  • Due to an increased number of parents coming in after 2:45 or during dismissal to check out their child, please remember that the last checkout takes place at 2:15 so we are able to prepare and run dismissal.
  • We are also experiencing an increased number of parents who are parking at Kroger and walking over to pick up their child, which is creating security concerns as it becomes difficult to monitor security. Please be advised that parents who arrive right before or during dismissal (2:45-3:45) will be asked to go to the car rider line to pick up their students or wait until dismissal has concluded. We cannot call students to the front during dismissal.

Lunch Visitor Policy Lunch Visitor Policy

As we open school, we will not be accepting parent visitors for lunch during the month of August as our teachers are working on establishing rules, routines, and procedures for the cafeteria. We look forward to welcoming lunch visitors beginning in September.

Birthday Treats Birthday Treats

For student birthdays, ice cream is available for purchase for the class or parents may provide a classroom treat, please ensure that the treat is individually wrapped by the vendor. Please note, ice cream is only sold on Fridays. We are not able to accept trays of cupcakes or cookies that do not have an ingredient list.

Welcome back to your DES Library Media Center!

Visits to the library to check out books will begin Friday, August 15th. Students in K-2 will keep library books at school, so that all students can enjoy and share self-selected books in the classroom. Students in Grades 3-5 are encouraged to bring library books home, but are responsible to pay for books that become lost or damaged. Library books taken home should always be kept in the student's backpack.

Reporting Absences Reporting Absences

You can now submit information regarding recent absences, such as doctor's notes, in ParentVUE.

From the app home screen, students with recent absences will appear with a number above the "Report Absence" button. Notes should be submitted within seven days of an absence.

On the Report Absences screen, there will be a list of eligible recent absences.

  1. First, Select a Reason for the absence (from Religious, Tardy, Excused Tardy, Unexcused Absence, and Excused Absence).
  2. Tap on "Add doctor's note or document" to take or upload a picture of a supporting document if one is available.
  3. Type a Note if there is additional information the school should know.
  4. Click Save once you are done.

As part of Gwinnett County Public Schools’ family engagement initiative, the school district seeks to empower parents with tools that allow them to help their children at home. Our AKS at Home project provides math and language arts resources to support families so that they truly are partners in their children’s learning. This support is available for families to access in the format that fits them and their schedule best. They can attend live virtual meetings, view recorded information at a time that best fits their schedule, or gain tips and suggestions on how to best help their students through tip sheets on a wide variety of topics.
