Think Pink
This table got into the spirit of Spirit Week on our Monday Pink-Out. It definitely brought out some post-Barbie movie PTSD to see so MUCH pink in our hallways.
Hoop Dreams
Our lunch basketball games are very animated. Some students wolf down their lunch to maximize their court time.
Earthquake preparedness
Students recount their harrowing very fast walk up the hill following our earthquake and tsunami evacuation drill on October 19. The entire district took part to test our systems in place should this happen in real life. The students and staff did very well, and the weather held off just long enough...
Sports: It's Never too soon...Season 2 Sports kicks off mid-October.
Students interested in Boys Basketball and Cheer need to make sure they are cleared through Final Forms prior to the first practice which is scheduled for January 2. If you are looking for Final Forms, you can find it at this web address: https://hoquiam-wa.finalforms.com/
Parents need to create an account. Here is where you can find directions for making an account: https://s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/sportshub2-uploads-prod/files/sites/2656/2020/12/14094353/Hoquiam-FinalForms_ParentPlaybook.pdf
For families who have athletes in Girls Basketball and Wrestling, you can see the Fall Sports Schedule here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1KD9c5cvIH73rr_H0MoiIlmSZSyUEC-VzjKX8wdTbTB8/edit . Schedules for Boys Basketball will be available at the beginning of the season. Please understand that contests can change at any time. We will work hard to keep you abreast of changes as we are made aware of them.
A week of Spirit
October 30-November 3 is our first Spirit week of the year. For students trying to dress as Mr. Cook on Friday, my style has no boundaries...good luck.
Foodball Basket Bingo prep
Math CAN be fun...
Using games to help put multiplication facts into long term memory. Spiral is a board game played using a die and deck of cards. Avid's multiplication relay has students working together to make a multiplication table in 4 minutes using post-it notes. Teamwork is the key to success on this task.

Creative Kids, Creative foods. Students worked together to make cupcakes, a swiss meringue, and pipe the meringue on the cupcakes.
A moment of quiet, intense competition
Self Portraits
Students put a whiteboard above their head and follow drawing instructions to complete a task. These "self portraits" were created in 2 minutes.
Counselor's Corner
Hello fall!! I love the crispness in the air, the leaves turning color, and the routines of school.
This month the counselor presentations were about attendance. It is so important for our students to be in school. We talked about different reasons why some days students do not want to come to school, and there are many.
Washington state has truancy laws that we have to follow as a school. The Becca Law states:
1) One excused absence, the school will inform the parent/guardian.
2) Three unexcused absences within a month, the school is required to request a conference with the parent and student to discuss the causes of the unexcused absences and solutions to prevent further absences.
3) Five unexcused absences in one month, a referral to the Community Engagement Board (CEB) happens.
4) Seven unexcused absences within a month, or ten unexcused absences in a school year, the school district is compelled to file a petition of truancy with the juvenile court.
Please if your child cannot attend school, call in (360-538-8221) or email (ewebber@hoquiam.net). We want to work with you and your child.
Students also took a survey as to why some are not coming to school. This data will help us better understand what we need to do at the school level. We want to see your smiling child in our classes.
Hope Squad
Our Hope Squad students have started the process of learning QPR (Question, Persuade, and Refer). This is our meat and potatoes of what we do. Students will have a lot of practice time. But even with this practice, it is never easy to hear a friend or peer talk about wanting to hurt himself/herself. Students will also be presenting to other homerooms as to what Hope Squad is and what QPR means. We never want to hold onto a bad secret.
I feel the need....The need to READ
Mrs. Krohn channeling her inner "Maverick" flashing a thumbs up to all of her Top Gun Readers in 7th Grade ELA
Big Grizz...Little Grizz
Kruz standing proudly with his Big Grizz. This program partners up a high school player with a younger player, with Big and Little Grizz rooting and supporting each other through their seasons.
Let's have a meeting...
The ball is always the center of all social activity in a soccer match. The domino effect of kicked shins right after this picture was taken was epic.

Parent Chaperones needed
On December 7 and 14 the 6th grade at HMS will be taking a field trip to Seattle to view a performance of Pacific NW Ballet's "The Nutcracker." We are looking for parent volunteers who have no issues with riding a bus, and ensuring students get to where they need to get to (we will be travelling in a large group). If you are interested please contact the main office at 360-538-8220. If you haven't already, it will require you to fill out a volunteer form at the district office. As this involves a background check, please do this as soon as possible!

October Rotary Students of the Month
Each month Hoquiam Rotary honors two 8th grade students who embody the virtues that Rotary stands for: Service to others, citizenship, commitment to excellence, and hard work. The students are honored at a monthly luncheon, after being selected by our 8th grade staff.
This month's students embody these traits, and I am proud to introduce them to you!
Tristin Case-Tristin is the daughter of Jayla and Derek Case. She has 2 sisters and 3 brothers. Tristin takes her schooling pretty seriously, and is an involved member of the HMS student body. Outside of the classroom she is a member of Soccer, Volleyball, and a very proud member of the Junior National Honor Society. Her favorite class at HMS is History, with Ms. Folkers. Outside of school, Tristin enjoys reading a good book, and hanging out with friends. She is most proud of being inducted into the National Honor Society. As she gets ready for high school, she is most looking forward to continuing to play sports, participating in Running Start, and graduating! Congratulations Tristin, and thank you for all you do!
Caleb Gudino-Caleb is the son of Rebecca and Byron Gudino. He has one sister. Caleb is also a serious student, who is involved in the sports program here at the Middle School. He has a lot of classes he really enjoys, but pointed out that being a TA, and going Algebra with Mr. Gwin, and History with Ms. Folkers are particular highlights in his day. Caleb is a member of Cross Country, Basketball, Track, and Soccer outside of the classroom. He has enjoyed huge success as a runner, going undefeated the entire season recently...winning every race and breaking three course records! It comes as no surprise that outside of school, Caleb enjoys running, playing basketball, listening to music and audio books, and video games. He is most proud of his success in Cross Country. As he gets ready to make the transition to high school he is looking forward to a new school, the sports opportunities it brings, and the broader choice of classes. Congratulations Caleb!
