Throughout February, our schools proudly celebrated Black History Month by recognizing the achievements, contributions, and rich cultural heritage of African Americans. Students engaged in meaningful lessons, projects, and discussions that highlighted influential leaders, artists, scientists, and activists who have helped shape our nation’s history.
As part of the celebration, our sixth-grade students participated in a special Black History Month Bulletin Board Contest sponsored by the African American Parent Council. Congratulations to all of our sixth-grade participants for their hard work and creativity, and a special congratulations to this year’s contest winners! Your thoughtful presentations helped bring history to life and inspired our school communities.

Building a Love for Reading Across Our District
Our schools celebrated Read Across America this week, a nationwide initiative that promotes the joy and importance of reading. Students participated in a variety of engaging literacy activities, including guest readers, themed spirit days, and classroom reading celebrations.
Thank you to our teachers, staff, and families who helped make this week’s celebration meaningful and fun for our students!
Supporting Literacy: Book Giveaway at Haycox Elementary
Art Haycox Elementary School was proud to host a special Scholastic book giveaway sponsored by the Smart and Final Charitable Foundation. Through a partnership between Smart and Final and Scholastic, every student received three free books to take home, along with a bookmark.
Haycox was one of only six schools selected this year for this incredible opportunity. Students were thrilled to choose their books, and many even selected titles to share with family members at home.
A big thank you to the amazing Smart and Final volunteers who helped make this day so special for our students and helped encourage a love of reading in our school community.
Inspiring Curiosity Through Science
Fifth-grade students at Hueneme Elementary School recently explored the world of chemistry during science class. Students tested different powders—including salt, talc, baking powder, baking soda, and flour—to observe their appearance, solubility, and reactivity.
Through these hands-on experiments, students made predictions, recorded their observations, and discovered how different substances react. Activities like this help build curiosity, critical thinking, and a deeper understanding of science in everyday life, bringing lessons from the classroom into real-world experiences.
Bard Students Give Back Through Anchored for Life Club
Richard Bard Elementary School’s Anchored for Life Club recently hosted a donation drive to support Ventura County Animal Services. These student leaders model positive character and leadership while serving their school and community through collaborative projects and teamwork.
A big thank you to the Anchored for Life Club members for their hard work, dedication, and generous donations. Your efforts make a meaningful difference and inspire our school community to give back!
Have a great weekend!
