Wildcat Weekly- 1/12-1/16

Message from Principal Martinez 🐾
Dear Wildcat Families:
It has been wonderful to welcome back our wildcats this week. I hope everyone had a great winter break filled with joy and rest. As we look forward to next week, we anticipate an exciting Career Day here at school on Wednesday, January 14th. Our students will engage in learning about career choices that are representative in our community. A special thanks goes out to our PAWS group who has coordinated a special day for our students.
We are happy to welcome our new counselor, Yesenia Aldaco. Ms. Yesi is familiar with our school community and is excited to meet our students and work with our staff and families.
We are gearing up for iReady diagnostics and have 4 weeks to complete our testing. Please help your child be at school daily to ensure all their diagnostics are completed within our testing window!
Go Wildcats!

From the Health Office 🤒
As we are in the cold and flu season, I would like to share a few reminders about how we can work together to keep your students healthy. Our best defense is preventing illness from entering the classroom, using healthy habits in the classroom and at home, and ensuring proper sanitization when illness is present.
Several communicable illnesses can be difficult to contain once they begin spreading on campus, including (but not limited to):
- Noravirus (see attached letter)
- Influenza (Flu)
- Covid-19
- Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV)
- Pneumonia
If your student is suspected of having (or has been diagnosed with) any of the illnesses listed above, we ask that you please call and report the illness to the Ms. Diana in the health office. In accordance with HIPAA guidelines, your child’s name and personal information will remain confidential. When we are notified of a communicable disease, our custodial team immediately begins enhanced cleaning and sanitizing procedures to help prevent further transmission.
General guidelines for when to keep your child home for common symptoms:
- Fever: Stay home if fever is 100.4 F or higher. Return when fever went away in the night and is still gone in the morning without the use of medications such as Tylenol, Advil, or Motrin (acetaminophen or ibuprofen) and other symptoms are improving.
- Sore throat, cough, stuffy/runny nose, sneeze: OK to attend with mild symptoms. Stay home and seek medical attention for difficulty breathing, swallowing, or excessive drooling. Return when symptoms are improving. If your child needs medication at school (such as an antibiotic) please contact the health office.
- Vomiting: Stay home if vomiting has occurred 2 or more times in 24 hours. Return when vomiting has ended overnight and your child can hold down liquid and food.
- Diarrhea: Stay home if your child is unlikely to make it to the toilet in time. If stool looks bloody or black, seek medical attention. Return when improving.
- Overall not feeling well: Stay home for any new illness or symptom that prevents your child from participating meaningfully in routine activities.
Please see Poway Unified School District Health Information website for more details.
Thank you for helping to keep everyone in our school community healthy!
Digital Citizenship 💻
In today’s world of constant information, media literacy is essential for all students. It empowers our kids to think critically about what they see and hear online.
Media literacy helps children:
Distinguish facts from misinformation and disinformation.
Recognize bias or persuasion techniques in media content.
Make informed decisions when they consume and create content.
Developing this critical thinking skill helps students navigate digital spaces responsibly.
Resources for Your Family:
Elementary Resource: What is Media Literacy, and Why is It Important?
Secondary Resources: How to Help Kids Spot Misinformation and Disinformation
Together, families and schools can support students in building the media literacy skills they need to make thoughtful, responsible choices online.
