Principal's Update
Quarter 1 Ending
We are three weeks away from the end of the first grading period. As you know, the Superior School District uses Standards based grading (SBG). Progress reports will go out during the second week of November indicating your student’s current level of proficiency. Grades do not become official until the end of the first semester (second grading period) in January. The grade you will see on the progress report is the in-progress grade. With SBG, students have multiple opportunities to demonstrate proficiency on each standard. It is not uncommon for students to have not yet achieved proficiency (which is a 3) on a standard.
If your student has a score of NEE for a standard, that indicates that they have not provided evidence of progress toward proficiency for that standard. In nearly all situations, students who have an NEE have not completed the required assessment. If your student has an NEE on their progress report, I encourage you to speak with them so that they can make a plan with their teacher to complete the required assessment. At the end of the semester in January, an NEE for one or more standards in a class equates to a failing grade.
Please feel free to reach out to your student’s teachers if you have any questions about their progress.
Best,
Aaron Fezzey
Principal of Superior High School
PowerSchool
Communication about attendance and grades is a top priority each year at the secondary school level. To help facilitate communication, SHS uses an online grade book called PowerSchool. A PowerSchool parent account will allow you to check your student’s progress in school including grades, lunch balance, as well as their attendance.
If you need any assistance with PowerSchool (getting set up, resetting your password, etc), contact Mrs. Waltenburg any time.
Family Engagement Opportunities
Wondering how you can help make Superior High School the best place it can be? Here are some exciting opportunities to get involved.
New PTSA Group!
BIG NEWS! Starting next year, Superior Middle School PTSA has decided to become Superior Middle & High School PTSA!
What does this mean? They will be able to help support both Middle and High School students, staff, and schools. More information on the group can be found here. The next meeting will be on October 26th.
Consider getting involved! Find their Facebook Page here for opportunities and meeting details.
There are so many ways to become involved, at whatever level fits your lifestyle. We would love your input. Jump on board!
All Night Grad Party Planning
It is time to start planning the All Night Grad Party for our 2024 Spartan Grads. We invite any junior or senior parents that are interested in being a part of this event to attend the first planning meeting that will be held on Wednesday, October 25th at 6:00 pm at SHS in the library conference room. If you are not able to attend the first meeting, but would like to be a part of the event, please email Nicky Wilson at nickyw2433@gmail.com to be included on future meeting notices.
Being that graduation is on Friday evening again this year, we are hoping to get more junior parents involved with the planning and set up for the party. This will ensure senior parents have more time to spend with their families on the day of graduation.
We look forward to working with you to plan an amazing event for our students!

Unity Day
October is National Bullying Prevention Month to bring awareness to childhood bullying and promote kindness, acceptance, and inclusion. On Unity Day October 18th, plan to wear and share the color orange — as a tangible representation of the supportive, universal message that our society wants to prevent bullying, and is united for kindness, acceptance, and inclusion.
What is a bully? How can you advocate for yourself or others? Find some valuable resources here and open this conversation at home.

Student's have been emailed instructions by Mrs. Kalin.
Spartan Snaps
Spartan Alum and Professional photographer Ayla Androsky, owner of Ayla Jade Photography, will set up a studio in Mrs. Kalin’s classroom every Wednesday in October during lunch for Spartan Snaps. Seniors can get free grad pictures taken during those time slots, with one copy earmarked for the yearbook. Students must "book" their session by contacting Mrs. Kalin.
Our goal is that every student is represented in our 2024 yearbook.

Student Life
Student Announcements
Did your student mention auditions for a drama production in early October? Are they icing you out? Every day we email out announcements and opportunities to our students. Do you want a peek at what they get? Click here for the announcements for the day. Sometimes our students may overlook things that guardians might think is a good fit for them. Like joining the FBLA or trying out Basketball by catching an open gym. It's worth taking a glance once in awhile to see what info they are getting and possibly having a conversation at home.
Keystone Class
Keystone is the "Introduction to High Schoo" class where we make the foundation for successful high schoolers. Students cover everything from research methods, healthy relationships, goal setting, and a lot more. It's like a cornecopia of key topics that aren't covered in general core classes.
In Mrs. Gidley's Keystone, students have been researching a career that they are interested in and their final step was to 'do' their career.
A student that wants to be an elementary teacher created a lesson plan and craft to teach kindergarten counting.
Some student want to own a jewelry business and created a logo and jewelry pieces.
A few aspiring police officers that gathered fingerprints and labeled the different types of fingerprints.
All students currently in Keystone attended Yellowjacket for a Day on Tuesday, October 10th. Students spend the day on the UWS campus an participated in a variety of activities including: a presentation from Admissions, a campus tour, a Jeopardy style game, discussions with current UWS students, lunch, and time in the Marcovich Wellness Center.

Attendance Matters
Contact Ms. Elaine at elaine.holmberg@superior.k12.wi.us with any questions or assistance with attendance needs. Here are some reminders.
Contacting your Student
If you need to relay a non-emergent message to your student during the day, there are a few options:
- Call our main office at 715-394-8720 and we can send them a note.
- You can also email them. Students email address are: (student number)@superior.k.12.wi.us
If your student is needing to leave the building, here are some considerations.
We often get students who come to the office because they know they are getting picked up or leaving from a conversation you had with them at home, but we still need your permission for them to leave the building by you calling or sending an email to Ms. Elaine.
District Calendar
The 2023/24 Calendar can be viewed HERE. Remember that there is NO SCHOOL on October 30th and 31st.

Glad you scrolled through to the bottom. I haven't heard anything about the Snow Ball yet, I think Student Council is still regrouping after Fall Ball. While I have you here, I want to know:
