Alder Weekly Update
April 16, 2023
Hello Parents, Staff, and Students,
Many activities are being planned. This week, Parents’ Club held a meeting On Thursday, 4/20 on Zoom. Many of these dates were shared with parents about trips, Field Day for 6th grade, dances, and 8th grade celebrations for the end of the year. Please check out the website for these dates.
Take Your Child to Work Day will be April 27th. Our school district and staff are participating. If your child attends your work with you, please remember to call that morning, so we know that he/she is absent. Then, please follow up with a letter from your employment as documentation to excuse the absence.
Our counselors are preparing for state NJSLA testing. This will take place beginning the first week in May. Please be sure that your child is fed and well rested. This will allow them to do their best and show what they have learned.
Our next dance is April 28th. It will be a fun one with a GLOW theme. Dark colors and neon glow paint/marker will make this a lot of fun. There will be food, snacks and drinks available to purchase. Be sure to buy tickets in advance as there are no ticket sales at the door.
Check out the pictures on ehtalder Instagram. They are certain to bring a smile.
Ms. Giardina
Delaware Valley Science Fair
Students from both Alder and Fernwood who placed 1st or 2nd at the Jersey Shore Science Fair attended the Delaware Valley Science Fair throughout the last two weeks. Congratulations to Addison McColligan, who received 3rd place in Microbiology for her project on the amount of bacteria present on makeup samples at various stores. Her competition was the best of the best: all the regional science fair winners from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. Important to note, Addison is a 6th grade student and this was her first science fair project in which she competed against 7th and 8th graders who have years of prior experience. We are so proud of you and your hard work and dedication Addison!

I am a 7th Grade Science teacher on the Green Team. I have been teaching at Alder Avenue for 16 years and in the district for 20 years.
What is or has been one of your favorite things about Alder?
The staff at Alder Avenue is fantastic. They are so friendly and great to work with. I also love working on the Green Team. The teachers are like family to me.
What do you think will be your greatest challenge this year?
The greatest challenge coming into the year was adjusting to the new schedule and aligning it to my lessons and curriculum.
Where did you go to school? What degree did you earn?
I graduated from Rutgers University with a Bachelor of Science in Meteorology.
Any fun facts you would like to share about yourself?
I am married and have one daughter. In my spare time, I play competitive volleyball once a week and can also be found out on the golf course during the summer. Before I became a teacher, I worked for a company called Accuweather as a meteorologist. In my spare time, I still forecast the weather for our local area.
