Maple Dragons!
Note from Knight
Happy October, Maple Families!
It’s hard to believe we are already into October! Our halls and classrooms are buzzing with learning, friendships are growing, and students are becoming more comfortable with their daily routines. We are proud of the way our Dragons are settling in and making the most of their days at Maple. We look forward to building on this strong start as the year continues!
One important way families can help students succeed is by making sure they attend school regularly and arrive on time. Each day brings new opportunities to learn, practice skills, and connect with others. When students arrive on time, they can start their day with their classmates, hear important directions, and feel ready to participate in learning from the very beginning. Thank you for helping your child make school attendance a priority.
We are excited to share that Maple is starting a PTO (Parent-Teacher Organization)! Our first PTO meeting will take place this Thursday, October 15th at 6:00 in the Library, and we look forward to bringing families and staff together to support our students and school community. We encourage families to consider getting involved, sharing ideas, and helping us make Maple an even better place for our Dragons to learn and grow.
Thank you for being part of our Maple family and helping our Dragons shine!
Megan Knight, Principal
Maple's Anti-Bias Stance
At Maple Elementary, every student belongs. This means that every student regardless of their race, religion, language, gender, or any other factor- will be loved and accepted as a member of our school community. Bias and discrimination in any form are not tolerated within our school community. If and when incidents of bias occur, we will respond with care for those who have been harmed and education and consequences for those who have caused harm.

Costume Guidelines:
To ensure a fun and respectful event for everyone, please follow these costume guidelines:
No weapons of any kind
No masks or face coverings
No scary or gory costumes (e.g., blood, wounds)
Costumes should not significantly disrupt learning if worn all day (e.g., no inflatables)

ALICE Training
The week of October 12th-October 16th each classroom will be trained using our ALICE curriculum which teaches students how to stay safe in the event of an unsafe situation at school. The main message students are given is to listen to their teacher. Lessons will be taught at the beginning of the week. We will then practice a lockdown drill the week of October 19th-23rd. If you have any questions about ALICE please call the office or email the principal @megan.knight@springfield.k12.or.us.

Electronic Policy
Last year, Governor Tina Kotek issued an Executive Order requiring all Oregon K–12 public school districts to adopt policies limiting student use of personal electronic devices during the school day. This direction aligns with our current expectation at Maple that personal electronic devices, such as phones, wearables, watches, and tablets, must be powered off and kept in backpacks throughout the school day.
It is preferred that students keep all personal devices at home to prevent the risk of loss or damage. If you need to get a message to your student during school hours, please contact the school office 541-744-6395. When needed, students can make calls home from the office.

PBIS Corner!
Positive School-Wide Expectations
Be Safe.... Be Respectful.... Be Responsible
In each area of the school, what it looks like to be safe, respectful and responsible is different. The expectations are posted throughout the school and taught to the students.
Recognition Systems
Effective PBIS systems include a system for rewarding students who follow the school-wide expectations. Here is what we are doing at Maple:
- Dragon Tokens: Students earn Dragon Tokens for following school expectations. Dragon Tokens are used for reward systems in the classroom.
- Hoorays: Students can earn a Hooray for being caught going above and beyond with behavior that is safe, respectful, and responsible and walking with Dragon Pride!
Food and Drinks in the Classroom
Our Maple policy for food and drinks in the classroom:
Drinks: Only water is allowed during the day in the classroom. If a student brings another drink to school (such as hot chocolate, juice, soda) they will need to finish their drink in the cafeteria and be in class by 8:35.
Food: Teachers have different policies around snacks in the classroom. If your student has a snack time in their class, it is expected that they bring items that meet the district guidelines linked below.
If you have any questions about food and drink in the classroom, please call the office.
School Health Screenings
Health screenings play an integral part in children’s development and well-being. Because childhood health problems can eventually develop into chronic adult conditions, screenings that students are given in school can help detect potential health problems and improve the overall health of every student.
Healthy students are better learners and routine checks ensure that they are healthy and fit so they can meet their full academic potential. School health screenings help in the early detection of health conditions. SPS collaborates with community partners to provide these screenings for grades K-8 each school year.
For vision screenings, the Oregon Lions Sight and Hearing Foundation uses the innovative Hillrom Welch Allyn Spot™ device to screen students. The device has the ability to reliably screen for several vision issues in a matter of seconds.
For dental screenings, hygienists take a quick look inside the student’s mouth looking for any obvious signs of dental issues.
Contact your school health aide (Ms. Mary) if you do not want your student to participate in these health screenings.
Please consider being a parent volunteer on their screening day!

Healthy Moves
Healthy Moves is up and running!
This is a 30-minute activity program that is done before school. A variety of physical activities includes a warm-up, cardiovascular activities, games, and a cool down/yoga stretch. Activities are adapted to be appropriate for each grade. This program is designed to stimulate physical activity for kids in grades kinder-to-5th, and this has the added benefit of preparing them to be able to focus better in the classroom.
- Healthy Moves Trainers will come to Maple at 7:45
- Beginning at 8:00, trainers will pull any student finished eating breakfast, or students who have already eaten at home to the gym to lead them in activity.
- There will be a cap of 80 students per day, no students brought after 8:15
- At 8:25 trainers will line up students by grade level and dismiss to class
Thank you Healthy Moves for continuing this program at Maple!
