SOS Updates
The PFISD School Board conducted their regular meeting on 6/18. No decisions were made, but additional options with updated savings were presented.
Essentially, after the 4 elementary school closures, internal cuts made by the administration, and a task force organized to examine and optimize high school schedules (this does not necessarily mean they are eliminating block scheduling), the district predicts it only needs to save an additional $1-2 million between 2027 and 2029 to ensure they stay within budget. The Board would, however, have to cut more money if they want to offer teachers raises.
The Board was presented with 2 options, and asked to offer the district direction as to which way they would like to go.
Option 1 included the following: Reduction of up to 11 Asst Principal positions across MS & HS, reduce athletics district budget by 20%, reduce fine arts district budget by 20%, Reduction of up to 11 Counselor positions across MS & HS, Central Office personnel cuts (7 positions). (approximate savings, 3.8 million)
Option 2 included the following: Close a Middle School, Close an Additional Elementary (approximate savings 4.6 million)
There is a wide range of views on the PFISD school board regarding direction and school closures. There is at least 1 Board Member ready to close Park Crest, but the others are split between 1. Not closing any Middle Schools and 2. Not necessarily closing Park Crest Middle School. 1 Board member requested that information be considered for Pflugerville Middle School. Other Trustees asked that additional elementary schools be considered. The district representatives took note and will return to the Board with additional options.
It is important to note that, while we do not want Park Crest to close, we also do not wish this process or turmoil on any other campus. We have always advocated for a fair, equitable, transparent process that includes high school feeder patterns, student transition plans, and prioritizes vulnerable students. Through our own analysis, we genuinely feel Park Crest is not the best option for district optimization. It is and remains one of top middle schools, and is the most reflective of Pflugerville's diversity. We will continue to make our stance known, but also encourage the Board to deeply consider whether or not closing a secondary school at all makes sense for student success and long-tern growth.
We will keep you updated as the Board and District move through this process. You are always welcome to reach out to us for more information and ideas at pto.parkcrest@gmail.com
