News from the Principal π€©
Dear Neabsco Families,
Happy last day of October! As we move into November, please remember that students will have no school on Monday and Tuesday.
This is a great time to schedule and attend a family conference with your childβs teacher on Monday, November 3rd. These conferences are important opportunities to learn about your childβs academic progress and how you can best support their learning at home. November 4th is a teacher workday and report cards for quarter one will go home on November 12th. We print a copy of the report card and send it home on this day, but families can find report cards in Parent Vue. All students will return to school on Wednesday, November 5.
If your family is participating in Halloween activities, please be safe, make sure children stay in groups and are closely supervised as it gets dark.
Also, donβt forget that Daylight Savings Time ends this weekend, remember to set your clocks back on Sunday! As we begin finish many of our fall assessments, please take a moment to ask your child how they are doing. Our teachers are doing an amazing job helping students understand their progress in real time and set goals for growth.
Thank you for your continued partnership in helping every student grow at Neabsco!
Mrs. Brooke LeVecchi
Principal, Neabsco Elementary

All In Tutoring π
Students are working hard in math or reading. In math students receive small group lessons and mastering at least 2.2 skills every week. Your student's math tutor addresses any learning growth the student needs to make. The math lessons are designed to develop foundational skills and extend student's problem-solving skills.
In reading, students are working on thinking critically about the text and analyzing what the information in the text lets them know as a reader. Students should complete at least 8 Lexia units each week. Lexia provides students with a personalized learning experience and supports the six areas of reading through phonological awareness, phonics, vocabulary, structural analysis, automaticity/fluency, and comprehension.

Counselor Corner
Supporting Every Learner, Together
In October, Mrs. Larimore presented at the Virginia School Counselor Association (VSCA) conference alongside Mrs. Betancourt (our ELL teacher) and Mrs. Scott (Instructional Technology Coach at PACE West). Together, we introduced LEAD 4:Them, a team-based approach that stands for Listen, Encourage, Adapt, and Develop. This framework blends counseling, technology, and multilingual learning to ensure every student feels supported and successful. The goal is to break down barriers and build up resources so that every child feels valued, motivated, and empowered. We were honored to represent PWCS and share how collaboration can make a meaningful difference in studentsβ lives. We are proud to be part of a community that champions equity, innovation, and the power of working together.

π When Elephants Were Furry π
The woolly mammoth was a huge animal from thousands of years ago. It had curved tusks and a long trunk, like its elephant cousins β but it also had wild 3-foot long hair all over its body. Weβre guessing that did NOT smell good, but it helped the woolly mammoth live in extremely cold temperatures. Plus it meant endless new hairstyles.
Wee ones: Who weighs less, an 8-ton mammoth or a 5-ton elephant?
Little kids: Both girl and boy mammoths had tusks. If you had one boy and one girl, how many tusks did they have together? Bonus: Regular African elephantsβ tusks reach βonlyβ 10 feet. How much longer were the mammothβs 16-foot tusks?
Big kids: Mammoths went extinct (died out) about 5 thousand years ago. How do you βspellβ 5 thousand as a number? Bonus: The woolly mammothβs hair was about 3 feet long. How does that stack up against your height in inches? (Reminder if needed: A foot has 12 inches.)
Answers:
Wee ones: The elephant.
Little kids: 4 tusks. Bonus: 6 feet longer.
Big kids: 5,000. Bonus: Different for everyoneβ¦subtract 36 from your height in inches, or subtract your height from 36 if your height is less.

π Making the Most of Your Parent-Teacher Conference π
A parent-teacher conference is a special opportunityβitβs one-on-one time with your childβs teacher, focused entirely on your childβs strengths, needs, and goals for the year ahead.
To make the most of this valuable time:
π£οΈ Talk with Your Child First
Ask how school is going. Is there anything your child wants you to share or ask the teacher?
π Prepare What Youβd Like to Share
You know your child best! Jot down key things about your childβs personality, learning style, or home life that might help the teacher support them.
β Bring Questions
Consider asking:
- Is my child meeting grade-level expectations in reading and math?
- Do they participate in class?
- How do they interact with peers?
β° Be Punctual
Teachers often schedule conferences back-to-back. Arriving on time helps everyone stay on track.
π Plan Together
Ask how you can support learning at home. Work with the teacher to create a plan for any challenges.
π¬ Share with Your Child
After the meeting, let your child know what was discussed. Celebrate successes and explain any next steps.
We hope to see everyone at this event. We want to thank you for your enthusiasm to support literacy and learning.
