JFK Parent News
November / December: Edition 4, Issue 1.1
JFK Families,
The school year continues to fly by as we have successfully completed over 60 days of school! December seems to go by even faster as we only have 15 school days prior to winter break. However, those 15 days in December are very important as our JFK staff continue incorporate high-quality Tier 1 instruction for all students. Additionally, starting December 2nd, all students will take MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) in Math and ELA. This assessment helps JFK staff….
1. Measure academic growth from September to December.
2. Review data to make instructional decisions to support individual student needs.
3. Students can review goals and progress they set for themselves.
Proper sleep and nutrition are important to help students demonstrate their learning on MAP. Thank you, parents/guardians, for partnering with us to help all students learn and grow academically.
SOAR Slips Update: On Tuesday, November 26th, we celebrate our JFK students earning over 2,000 SOAR slips in November with Turkey BINGO. We have set of school-wide goal of 2,000 SOAR slips during 15 instructional days in December to earn PJ’s and Popcorn on Friday, December 20th. This means, we need to average 134 SOAR slips a day as a school! I have no doubt our students can do this!
We look forward to continuing the great things taking place at JFK as we turn the calendar to January. Have a safe and happy winter break.

FREE Child Screenings
The Sioux Falls School District offers free developmental screenings for children from birth to age five who reside within the district’ boundaries. We will check your child’s development in the areas of motor skills, concepts, and language. We also complete a free vision and hearing check. Screenings are done throughout the year from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm Monday through Friday. We can also get your child registered for Head Start if you meet eligibility requirements. For information or to schedule a free appointment, call the Early Childhood screening office at 605-367-8488. The Early Childhood Screening office is located at 2205 N. Career Avenue.
It is important to teach your children about best practices as a pedestrian, and for elementary students this includes crossing only at corners, and never midblock. While it may save a few steps, it can be very dangerous in high traffic areas, or in areas with cars parked on the street. Staff on duty at JFK will redirect students that they see crossing improperly, but it is important that the same message is given at home.
JFK Elementary
The JFK office is open from 7am-3:45pm Monday-Friday.
