Los Pen NEUs

From the Desk of Mrs. Weekes
Dear Los Pen Families,
The warm weather is here! We are encouraging our students to practice an important skill: self-awareness and listening to their bodies. Children are excited to play and have fun with friends. They are having so much fun that they do not notice when they are getting too hot or uncomfortable until they are feeling unwell. Please help your child come to school dressed for the heat. We have noticed many students wearing sweatshirts and extra layers, so please remind your child that it is okay—and important—to remove layers when they begin to feel warm. Sending a water bottle each day is also a great way to help children stay hydrated.
We also encourage students to take breaks and to tell a trusted adult if they are feeling too hot, dizzy, tired, or just not feeling like themselves. When an adult reminds a child to drink water, please encourage them to listen and take the time to hydrate. Learning to notice and respond to what our bodies are telling us is an important part of growing independence and self-awareness. Together, we can help our children learn to check in with themselves and take care of their bodies.
Please see our school's Response to Weather Plan HERE.
Very Respectfully,
Mrs. Weekes
Have you Heard about our TRRFCC Tokens?
If you've been a Los Pen family for a number of years, then you are aware that one of the pillars of the Los Pen culture is the 6 Pillars of Character (trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship). We are excited - and so are the students! - to introduce our TRRFCC Tokens to our students this school year. Students may earn a token for demonstrating one or more of the six pillars. Upon receiving a token, students deposit their token into their classroom token jar. Classroom jars will then be deposited into a large school jar at each Friday Flag ceremony, and school-wide surprise rewards will be earned when our school earns targeted amounts.
This is a wonderful way to encourage our students to demonstrate exceptional character, which contributes to their classroom community, and our school community as a whole.
LPES School Site Council Needs You!
Would you be interested in serving on the LPES School Site Council (SSC)? The SSC is a governing body that is responsible for providing input on how categorical monies as spent to improve the overall instructional program at Los Pen. SSC members work together to set and monitor goals for improving student outcomes at Los Pen, and we meet approximately 5 times throughout the school year.
We are looking for four parent/community representatives to join SSC this school year. The SSC is composed of equal numbers of school staff and parent/student/community representatives who serve a two-year term. If you are interested in being a part of the Los Pen SSC as a parent/community member representative, or nominating another parent/community member, please contact Mrs. Weekes at sweekes@powayusd.com or Ginette Granados Jenkins at ggrandados@powayusd.com by Friday, August 28th. Once nominations are received, we will be sending a ballot so that you may cast your vote.
Dropping off & Picking up
Please use the drive-through lane along the red curb to drop off or pick up students. Please do not park and/or exit your vehicle along the red curb, as this prevents traffic from flowing and our buses from safely pulling up and unloading students.
Our parking lot is reserved for PUSD staff members and vehicles marked with handicap placards.
Here is a short video that explains our parking lot procedures (both links are the same video):
Reminder: Arrival/Drop-off Procedure
During arrival, when students enter the Entry Gates near the MPR, we ask that families leave the center aisle clear and stand off to the side when saying goodbye. TK and Kinder students will enter the gate, walk to the right of the cones and along the wall, and into the inner circle toward their designated play area (they may be accompanied by an older sibling). If your child needs to eat breakfast, remind them to do so before they go to the playground.
All other students in grades 1-5 should walk on the left side of the cones (closest to the lunch tables) and wait until they directed to go to the playground. Remember, this is not a recess time and there will not be equipment available.
These shifts are being made in attempt to increase student safety and streamline our process for arrival. We will continue to monitor our arrival process in an attempt to make student dropoff as efficient as possible.
Should you have any questions, please contact the LPES Front Office Team. Thank you for keeping safety a priority.
A Note from Ms. Bohn, School Counselor
“I am KIND”
We are excited to begin our new Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) program, Character Strong. The lessons are starting with one of the most important qualities we can share with others: KINDNESS! Students will have the opportunity to take a photo in front of our “I AM KIND” banner and, even better, they can be the “I” in KIND! This is a fun way to remind our students that kindness starts with each of us. If you are able to take a picture at the banner, please send it my way. I would love to create a collage. EBohn@powayusd.com
Throughout the month, we will be talking about all the ways we can show kindness—to our friends, our families, people we may not know, and ourselves. Kindness doesn't have to be a big gesture. A smile, inviting someone to play, saying thank you, helping a friend, and including someone who may be alone. It is also important to be kind to ourselves, giving ourselves a little bit of grace during difficult times. The small gestures make a big difference. Small acts of kindness can create big changes—and it all starts with YOU!

New ParenVUE Mobile App
Edupoint has released a modernized ParentVUE (New) mobile application and retired the older ParentVUE app. Families should download the updated version to maintain access to student grades, schedules, and attendance records. Here are some easy directions you might provide to families:
How to Get Started with ParentVUE (New)
Remove Old App: Delete the old ParentVUE app from your phone first so the new version functions correctly.
Download: Search for ParentVUE (New) directly in the Apple App Store or Google Play Store, or follow the upgrade prompt inside your legacy (old) ParentVUE app.
Connect to District: Open the new app, swipe through the intro, and search for your school district using your postal zip code.
Log In: If prompted, select "Already Activated" if you already have an account, and sign in using your existing username and password.
