Emergency Preparedness- Message from Erica and Jess Emergency Preparedness- Message from Erica and Jess

Periodically we like to remind families of how we remain vigilant and prepared for emergencies throughout the year. We are committed to using a developmental perspective and lens as we work to make sure that we keep our building safe and prepared.

Throughout the year we practice fire drills, and sometimes need to engage in procedures to allow emergency medical services quick access to different locations of the building.

Additionally, our staff prepare for dangerous intruders by ongoing training on the ALICE protocol. This is an acronym that teaches staff to remain Alert to their surroundings, know how to Lockdown and barricade in a room if necessary, Inform others by any means necessary, Counter if you come across someone and Evacuate if that’s the safest location.

As students get older they learn more of this protocol, for students at Davis we break down key components throughout the year. We primarily focus on students stopping and listening to adults during an emergency. And sometimes that may mean staying where we are, and other times it may mean leaving the building like a fire drill. In the beginning of the spring we will have a very controlled drill that allows students and faculty some practice while minimizing fear and disruption. We will share more about that as we get closer to the actual date so that you are prepared for any conversations your child(ren) may have at home.We periodically review a short story (and will be doing so this month) that includes this language:

The text in the short story reads as follows in case you are curious of the language students are hearing at school:

“Teachers keep us safe at school. If there is an emergency we need to listen to them at all times. Sometimes we may have to leave the building and move to a different meeting place outside. Or, we may have to spread out and sit very quietly in the classroom. My teacher may have to turn off all the lights and block the door. We may have to go to a different part of the school. We may have to leave the building through a different door. An announcement might be made that we may have to hide in the classroom or run outside with our teacher. During an emergency, police officers may come to the Davis School. We listen to the police like we listen to our teachers. During an emergency, fire fighters may come to the Davis School. We listen to fire fighters like we listen to our teachers. Sometimes we practice fire drills, evacuation drills, and lockdown drills so that we are safe. Sometimes we may be with our teachers and get on a bus or walk to a different building to meet our parents or trusted adults. We stay safe together.”

Please be sure to reach out if you have any questions or need more help in talking with your children. We take your trust in us to keep your children safe seriously and continue to work to ensure we are prepared while always factoring in our students’ developmental understandings and needs.
